Win32:Atraps-pf [Trojans] Please help!
« on: July 03, 2012, 10:17:06 AM »
Hello,

Avast keeps picking up this Trojan Horse (Win32:Atraps-pf) on my system and saying it moved it to chest* however it keeps happening every so minutes.

I ran M/Bytes, it instructed me a reboot was required to remove the found infected files but then my computer just kept crashing and couldn't restart, so after doing a successfull restore to be able to get back into win 7, now I also keep getting new tabs popping up in my browser directing me to ad-sites.

I re-ran M/bytes in safe mode however, this time I did not remove the infected files to avoid system crashing again.

I would immensley appreciate any help in cleaning this for good please.

Thank you.

OK lets get at it

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    Quote
    :Files
    C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_32\Desktop.ini
    C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_64\Desktop.ini
    C:\Windows\Installer\{ca2def57-a32c-ed50-39a7-6560710f0774}

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.
THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.[/b]
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hello,

After completing the first step, OTL instructed to do a reboot - when I clicked yes, I got the blue screen (system crash).

Rebooted in normal mode anyway, OTL produced a log which is the first attachment.

I then ran a "Quick Scan" in OTL ( did not have All Users* box ticked though - not sure if I was meant to), the second attachment is the Log that that scan produced.

If my computer is clean now, should I re run M/Bytes? if not then I'll await further instruction.   I've posted this as soon as computer has rebooted so not sure yet if Avast will still be picking up Trojan or not?  If it does occur, I'll reply accordingly.

Once again though, thank you immensely for the time/help.

Wallacej.

Essexboy took your case. Unfortunately it is really late back in the UK. He will be tomorrow afternoon to take a look at your logs.

Hello,

I attached the new M/bytes scan.  It seems to have found 12 infected files...most are key gens from software I've downloaded but yet to install/execute.  Also I did get another system crash (blue screen) when I went to print something but not sure if this has anything to do with that...

I did not remove the infected files once again from M/bytes to avoid a possible system crash - not sure now if you want me to do this or not?

Avast doesn't seem to have picked up anymore of the Trojan issues it was detecting before.

I'll run Avast! scan and see what the comes up with also...

Thanks.

Just a quick follow up...

Ran Avast! and the scan also found infected files.  However wasn't to sure where/how to attach the required log.

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine
C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
Was the infection found in either of the above locations ?

Allow MBAM to remove all detections

Could you run a fresh OTL quick scan ensuring all users is selected

Hello,

In regards to the Avast! scan, yes it found all but two of the infected files in the c:\_otl\movedfiles location however it showed that (2) Win32:Sirefef-PL [Rtk] were also found in c:\windows\assembly\Gac_32\desktop.ini & c:\windows\assembly\Gac_64\desktop.ini and that when I went to apply the "Move to chest" command, all infected files including those in the _OTL\MovedFiles location, were moved except for the above two.  It gave an "error:access is denied (5)" message.

I have attached the latest Quick scan log ran in OTL.

I will also re-run M/bytes now and allow it to remove all infected files found and report back if any errors/system crashes occur.  Thanks.

Quick follow up...

Re ran M/Bytes and for the infected files it found to be removed, a restart was needed.  So, once again in attempting to do so - I got the blue screen system crash.  Nonetheless, I restarted and re ran M/bytes and this time no threats were found.

Regarding Avast! scan, The two infected files that were giving me the error message when attempting to "move them to chest", I simple used the delete action in Avast to erase them - along with the other infected files that were "moved to chest".

Re ran Avast! scan and no threats found with that either.

No sure if a "quick scan" with OTL is required after having done these lastest tests.  the previous scan log uploaded was just prior to these.

Thanks.

  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
