« on: November 22, 2010, 04:31:49 PM »
Hi everyone!
I was using an older version of avast! free, until few days ago when i started getting pop-up from avast to remind me that my registration is expiring soon. So i clicked on download avast free, and tried to install it but at the end of installation i got a message that there were some problems with installation and that insatallation is completed. after that i tried booting my system and found out that my old version has been uninstalled.
i've downloaded again from site avast free and aswclear5 and tried uninstallin avast4 and avast 5 and rebooting but i haven't managed to install new avast yet. what should i do?

i hope you guys can help me

Did you not install avast 5.0.677 after using the uninstall utility to ensure all remnants of previous 4.8 install and failed avast5 install ?

Clean reinstall instructions:
- Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.677 http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).
  • 1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

done all of that, uninstalled it in safe mode (first 4.8 then rebooted to normal, then again in safe mode for 5.0, maybe this is the problem), but i can't install the latest version because it says that there were some problems in installation. After that all i have is blank folder

Removal is the only thing that needs safe mode.

When you install Avast 5, you should be in normal mode.
For generic computer (not avast) problems, you can also visit my forum for help: http://www.jacobytech.net/forum

I understand that you uninstalled 4.8 in Safe Mode then rebooted.  Did you uninstall 5.0 in Safe Mode and reboot as well using the Avast Uninstall Utility Tool?

Step-By-Step Guide for Clean Uninstall / Install:
1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.677) for the version you need and save it to your HDD before you uninstall.
Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe - (English only)
Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe - (multi-language version)
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD.
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.  Uninstall 5.0 at this time.
6. Reboot.
7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
8. Get Internet access and register your copy Free:
    Free – http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php
9. Update the Avast definitions.

Before you post the log, what other security software do you currently have on the machine and in the past (antivirus, firewall, trial versions of security software, other security software)?

If you had them in the past, how did you remove them?

currently none, i was using avast free for at least 2 years. i really don't remember how i uninstalled something else before that.
when i search my computer for avast, it shows aproximately 10 files in windows/prefetch and windows/temp directories. Maybe t his is the problem, should i delete them in safe mode manually?

In normal mode, you can use an standard machine cleaner to clean your machine like you normally would.  Many of us here use CCleaner, a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool.  There is a Slim version available as well at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds - 4th option down.  It removes unused files (cache, temporary Internet files, etc.) from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.  It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history.

Do not delete the Avast files outside of what CCleaner does; do not go into Avast folders and delete anything.  Please post your log after running CCleaner.  Thank you.

They aren't actually files in the pre-fetch folder, but point to the locations of the files to speed loading.

These should be up[dated on successful installation, though there shouldn't be any issue if you clear the pre-fetch items, they would be rebuilt over a few boots.
