Title: problems with my new avast internet security 7
Post by: bambibear on May 27, 2012, 03:09:14 AM
:-\ hi.  i really need help.  avast was highly recommended, so after my last total system
recovery, 2 days ago (for the 5th time), i bought the avast internet security 7 on line at avast.  now, i have several major problems.  the email & IM
aren't registering or reading the emails (this is so urgent to me as this is how i was hacked before) :'(.  no bars are moving & it still shows it has read
no emails. i have both gmail & yahoo for my small business.   today when i tried to check the settings, it said invalid password.  i can't even set the regular settings. :'( as it still says invalid password.  after getting microsoft updates today, my windows 7 64 bit computer was locked.  i had to go into safe mode & reset my windows password.  is my windows password the avast password ?  something is wrong with the avast & i'm getting no answers in the support knowledgable base or avast technical support. :'(  can anybody help me get this working right ????i downloaded the avast thru avast; it installed as a trial as i was still getting updates for the recovered windows 7.  i am not even sure i put the license key in right.  i tried the remote assistance & get no where.  please, please help me.
  thank you, bambibear[/b][/i][/i]

OS:  windows 7, 64 bit
no previous anti-virus installed as i had to do a system recovery.

if you need my order # or product # or customer # i have those.

ambibear, take it easy. Get anxious won't help.
I'll try to manage some of the situations.
1. Your Windows password is not your avast! password (unless you've set both the same).
2. avast! shouldn't have blocking your mail of Google or Yahoo. Do you use any email program (like Outlook) or you're using your browser to retrieve/send mail?
3. Inserting the license key into: avast! Free Antivirus (http://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=459), avast! Pro Antivirus (http://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=475) and avast! Internet Security (http://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=476).

Hi bambibear,

Text below is a recap of your post above, albeit in an easier to understand format.

Posting in larger than normal font size/colors and/or CAPS is akin to shouting, and we don't want/wish that?  Members here are forum users, just like you.

Follow Tech's advice and then,

Did you do a system restore? Or did you do a factory restore?  (Point # 2)  The difference is crucial.  Why so many times?

Other issues posted above can be addressed by reading and following this sticky here:  http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0)

Both malware experts here can address issues you now have, but first will need to see the following logs attached:  Malwarebytes, OTL, and aswMBR logs.  Once these logs are attached, and the system is free of malware, then the other issues can be addressed.

To attach all logs:  "Attachments and other options" link below the text box you are writing in, click that, and attach the three logs in the 'Browse' line below.  Note the size limit, is 192 Kb, so you may have to run more than one post to complete all log attachments.

Nothing can really be done without the logs being attached here first.

Point # 3)  Avast does not scan web-mail, as gmail and yahoo! are.  If these are imported into Outlook, then yes, Avast! will scan.

Point # 5)  No, your avast password is not your Windows password.  Only way this could be, is if you set it this way when you set the password for Avast!

Point # 6)  As the Avast! Internet Security is still running on a trial basis, you still have full protection for 30 days or until you successfully insert your license you purchased.

hi.  i hope i can answer all of you.

tech: i use the browser for my email.   when i downloaded the paid version, i bookmarked thar page to come back the next day & save the license key folder, i just don't know if it's right.  it does say i'm actively proyected.

mchain:  i truly apologize, i didn't know i was doing things wrong.  it was a total system restore, or out of the box condition.  on the full scan, avast did find a root-kit that it removed or moved, this i'm not sure of.  i have no logs from malwarebytes or the others as avast is my virus, spam, everything security  now.

why?  ok, the first 3 times were from hackers, not malware.  new hard drive arrived less than 2 months ago, i was hacked & invaded by what i am not sure because hp took care of it, i have an extended warranty.

i do have a license key, a customer order number, a product number, customer number & a confirmation from paypal i bought the 1 year subscription.

i have done 3 fullscans, the first found 2 infected files but when hp updated them yesterday, then they were fine.  scans later in the day showed no problems.

so, what should i do now ?  thank you

When you use your browser for your email, the email provider should scan all email before it arrives in your computer.  I know Yahoo! uses Norton, but exactly what gmail uses, I do not know, as I do not have an account there.  Norton scans all downloads and email attachments in Yahoo! before it arrives on my desktop.

Avast! does not scan web mail as the above is true in any case, and the email providers do it for you.

No offense was intended, so none taken.

If this was indeed a factory restore, question is, did the restore come with a factory (hp) installation of an antivirus program?

Even if you have not ever run the hp installed a/v program, you can have problems with avast running properly in the future, as you would need to uninstall that program (not avast) to ensure you do not have that sort of problem.  Two potentially resident antiviruses on the same system can cause unwanted behavior.

If Avast! did indeed find a root-kit, then it is important to delve further into your system to remove all remnants left behind.  If the updates from hp cleared your infections, it is possible these were false positive results, and if hp restored these files with known clean ones, then the scans made later in the day would hold true, that there is no further infection?

It is worrisome Avast! found a root-kit, however, so soon after a factory restore of your system.  Are you at SP1 for Windows 7?

Attaching the logs from the programs posted in the sticky will allow a malware expert to look over your system to make sure it is, in fact, clean.
This sort of information will be viewable only if you attach the logs from these programs here.

hi again.  i have run malwarebytes & OTL.  will finish tomorrow as it's almost 1 a.m. here.  thank you, tech & mchain for the help.

sorry, mchain, just got your message.  yes, it was a factory restore.  there was norton internet security, i refused.  also nortonon line, again i refused.  after i removed these, even though i never installed, i restarted, removed registry parts left, restart, then i got the avast.  maybe there was norton left even though i never got it.  see, this is an hp where i choose the a/v, i had none added, just optional.

so far i love avast.

malwarebytes i had no problem with, as far as i can see.

on the "OCT",  avast kept not allowing it to be sandboxed after 15 seconds so i had to run it normal.  tried 3 times before i figured it out.   can't figure out the results for this yet.

i'm a  female computer  so-so geek, who only knows the basics.

thank you mchain for worrying, wow i'm flattered.  makes me feel like people care, so i thank you.

i'm not sure of the SP1 or SP2, jusr got more updates.

am i do go step-by-step in the sticky note to make sure the system is clean ?  i'll finish up tomorrow as i have these bookmarked.

thank you all, have a great nite & i'll return tomorrow.

bambibear,

A malware expert has been notified and will look over your logs.

Please be aware that any fixes/repairs are specially crafted for your system only; and run only additional programs when asked to do so.  Please follow any instructions to the letter, and do not hesitate to ask for clarification if not sure what to do.

Example:  aswMBR.exe fails to run.  Let the expert know.  He will tell you what to do.

hi & good morning all.  i am assuming i run everything on the sticky note page as mentioned by mchain.  i keep the logs to let avast fotum people know.  my question here is do i delete the malwarebytes, OTL & the others once i post the logs ?  thanks.  i'll return with more logs sometime today or as i get them.  have a great day everyone & thank you for all the help & assistance here.

ok, i don't think i need everything on the sticky note, what is left is the asw.MBR.exe.  i'll run it after the full system scan gets done.  still haven't deleted anything from yesterdays scans.  i'll be back with the results.  thank you.

i forgot to tell you that when i restarted after the full scan, the norton on line backup icon still keeps popping up in my hp advisor dock.  if you move it to the desktop, it's supposed to be gone, not reappearing after a restart.  one more question, do i turn on the hp system firewall or does avast firewall cover the firewall for both ?  i haven't touched the hp firewall, i just wanted to make sure.

Please be sure to attach the log made by aswMBR.exe so we can give that a good look over. Sorry...missed the post above.  :)

Hi,

Please download and run ERUNT (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html) (Emergency Recovery Utility NT).  This program allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.  **Remember if you are using Windows Vista as your operating system right-click the executable and Run as Administrator.

bambibear,

No real rush here.  How it works is jeffce will work closely with you, and once the system is clear, he will let you know that.  Additional programs will be run as requested, but if these three tools do the job, that may not be necessary.

There is stuff on your system that needs to be removed, however.  It needs to go, ok?

Just thought you might want to know.

hi mchain & jeffce.  can i save the backup to a cd or dvd ?  will this be my main backup  disk ?  if i have to remove my pics or anything important, please let me know as i lost these so many times when i didn't know i could save them, but the 4th time i found out i could save them, another long story for another time.

when jeffce says to copy & paste, does he mean the whole box undeer the services ?  thanks guys for helping.

hi.  i hope i did the ERUNT right.  it saved it to the ERUNT folder, whereever that is.

i came back, got the info for the OTL, copy & pasted, & ran the fix.  it was doing it's speedy scan, but then came up "not responding".  about 2 min. later the computer restarted & a box from ERUNT came ip & said i would have to save items manually.  now i'm scared, what did i do ???  the first log is where all this happened.

so, i figured maybe it was done & i did the rescan.  log # 2

let me know if i redo these & how can i copy the ERUNT to a back-up cd or dvd ?  is that allowed ?

Work with jeffce. You are in good hands.  Backup whatever you wish to a dvd is ok.

As this is new stuff, is ok.

Hi,

I see you had some problems.....

Quote
later the computer restarted & a box from ERUNT came ip & said i would have to save items manually.
Don't worry about this.  It happens because of the UAC with your operating system which is not allowing an automatic run of the program.  Just disregard it for now and we can fix that up later....but nothing is wrong.  :)  Oh...don't worry about backing up ERUNT to a disk either right now...let's get your system cleaned up first so that the malware isn't sitting in the registry.

Ok...for running OTL.  Looks like there were some problems with that.  Please boot to Safe Mode and try to run the fix that I provided earlier with OTL from there.

ok.  got into safe mode, haven't done that in a very long time, had to think about what was going on.  ok, scan 10 is the safe mode.  scan 11 is the quick  scan as i did the quick scan earlier or yesterday.  i unchecked those not to be checked & when the quick scan started, they re-checked themselves.  well, here we go.  hope i get good news.

Malwarebytes

I see that you have Malwarebytes already on your computer.  Please open Malwarebytes, update it and then run a Quick Scan.  Save the log that is created for your next reply.

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)

i will definately let you know if i have problems.  i got malwarebytes here thru an article mchain gave me, i just don't how to get the log files from the malwarebytes.

i agree with you, the ESET online scanner is a time consuming scan.  microsoft support had me use this, i think it was, last month when i had problems with their security essentials.  it came up negative.

When Malwarebytes completes its scan a log will automatically pop up.  Just save that to your Desktop and then attach it here along with the ESET scan when you get that completed as well.  :)

hi.  well restarted after a scan, all ok.

when i went looking for the ESET log file, (had to open ESET in my computer & work my way to the log file,), something popped up & said that wasn't allowed.  it's done that twice today.

something with the new registry backup, also said it couldn't back the ?? whatever it was, up. did i mess up the ERUNT the other day when the OTL quit responding ?  after ITL automatically restarted, the ERUNT kept telling me, i think anyway, invalid file or couldn't find or couldn't back up.  it did this at least 7 times.  i just kept hitting the yes as it was highlighted.   did i do right or did i mess something up ?

other than those things, it's been ok.  got my emails & business taken care of.  avast has updated the virus ware at least twice today.

the only thing that makes me mad is when i restart, the norton online backup icon is still showing up in the hp advisor dock.  also, when i open the advisor dock, the a/v is yellow (avast isn't showing up) & the firewall is red (again, avast isn't showing up as the firewall).  i did turn off the windows firewall for the system, the public networks & the home or private networks both for the centurylink, when i got the avast internet security.    do these stay off ?

other than those, i haven't seen any wierdness yet.  thank you again.

Hi,

Ok let's fix up ERUNT...  You are getting the warnings about ERUNT because the UAC that is part of your operating system is not allowing it to run on startup.  We will shut that off and just run it ERUNT manually about once a week to back up your registry.  To turn it off do the following...

Go to Start >> in the Start Search bar type Run >> select Run when it populates above >> type msconfig >> go to the Startup tab >> uncheck any entry you see with ERUNT >> reboot your system and then let me know if the warning comes up.

Are you wanting Norton online backup??

do i want norton ??  no way.  i've had norton; microsoft security essentials;  & several others.  right now i am very pleased with the avast, keep the avast !!!

oh, i forgot to tell you when i got the avast, first it downloaded as a trial even though i paid.  i came back the next day for the license, avast was running already.  i started checking out all avast offers on the desktop, not changing anything.  now, about 5 days ago, right before i got into the forum, i tried to look again at the settings.  i can't log in to anything with the password avast gave me, it says invalid password.  i changed my password for avast after i got the license, but it also is invalid.  am i not to look at any of the settings anywhere ?  in the shields, protection, etc.  will do the msconfig here shortly, about 10 min.  thanks again.  i'll be back.

Ok....let's remove Norton completely.

Download and run the tool here >> ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe and that should take care of all of Norton on your system.  Let me know how that works for you.  :)

restarted, icon (size of the smiley face) still there, guess i'll keep moving it to the desktop.

adobe needed updating.  restarted, still there.  i really hate norton. >:(

no problems other than the others i mentioned.

i'll checkback here tomorrow.  long hot day here & i'm tired.  have a great nite.

Hi,

So when you say the icon is still there...you mean the Norton icon correct?

Run a new scan with OTL.  Don't worry about checking LOP or Purity.  Attach the new log that is created and we will just manually remove what we find.  ;)

hi & good morning.  will run the OTL here shortly  sorry, yea the norton icon is still there.

do you think maybe the avast license key i did wrong ?  the only reason i ask is this morning i tried to open the saved license & it still is asking for a password, & neither are working.

will return shortly.

ok, this is for the quick scan, not the full scan.  i've been doing the quick scan, so i hope it's right.

now, when i got the current forum message awile ago, the avast scan was running.  i tried stopping it & again it needed a password so i just restarted the computer, as the passwords aren't working.  just wanted you to know this..

i had avast do a quick scan, it showed no viruses, but said some files couldn't be scanned.  i picked the do nothing option as i didn't know what to do here.  trying to keep you updated as to what is going on, even if it's minor things.  beings how it's my birthday, maybe i can have a clean computer with no troubles today.  thank you for all the help mchain & jeffce.

Hi,

Well Happy Birthday!!  Hopefully we can get you finished up today.  :)

I don't see any entries for Norton showing in the logs.

Follow the instructions I gave you to fix the ERUNT problem.  When you get to the Startup tab look for any Norton entries there.  If there are any uncheck them and then reboot your system and let me know if it is still popping up.

hi & thank you for the birthday wish.  there really is no big rush fixing the computer, i'm learning alot.  i would rather take our time & make sure everything is the way it should be rather than rush & something not fixed right.

there is no norton anywhere.  restarted.  see, the norton backup is optional but i didn't sign up for it this time, can't remember about last time computer crashed if i signed up or not.  and yes, it's still there, well until i move it to the deskyop which is where it's supposed to be deleted.

Hi,

I was just over at the Norton forum and seems many people are having this problem, but not a lot on exactly how to remove it.

Download Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html)You will now see a list of installed programs that Revo Uninstaller can remove.

hi & good morning.  i got the revo pro, couldn't find the regular revo on the site, it has 29 days left now.  looked for norton this morning, it did find 2 entries & deleted them.  i restarted & the icon is still there but there is no norton now.  maybe it'll finally go away, the icon i mean.  hope you have a good day.  i'll check back later.

since the computer has no viruses that i know of, can i run the disk cleaner ?

also, on the avast, can we address these issues ?:
first, the password needed to check on any of the settings--anytime i try to go to any settings, it says i need a password & the password is invalid.
firewall--do i turn on the firewall for my networks in the firewall settings that came with the hp ?
can we make sure i did the license for avast right ?  i downloaded it to the download folder.  when i tried to put it in avast, i double clicked on the folder in the windows download folder.  but, avast still shows insert license key but has a customer number so i just need to know if the license key is installed right.
if iforgot anything, i'll let you know.  goyya go make breakfast.  thanks much ;D

@ bambibear
1. Personally I wouldn't use Revo for uninstalling any security application. Most companies have their own uninstall utilities, should the regular uninstall not be enough.

- Uninstall possible remnants of previously installed AVs see, http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/ (http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/), this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc.

2. If you are being asked for a password to change settings, if you didn't set one, have forgotten it, someone else set it, there is little you can do other than to reinstall avast.

hi davidr.  ok, i understand the uninstall & re-install of the avast, since i had at least one root-lit when i installed the avast internet security.

of you could walk me thru these things:
when i uninstall, i don't use revo, right ?  also, is it a full un-install or do i keep the settings?
how do i reinstall ?  go back to my email for when i paid ?
do i use the trial option or i have a license key option ?  when i got it before, it installed as a trial even though i paid for 1 year, then i downloaded the key to my download folder & double clicked, i never saw numbers or letters, so i'm not sure it was done right.
how do i save the key ?  desktop or folder ?  and, how do i get the key onto my avast ?
how & where do i set a password for my avast internet security when i reinstall ?
will the avast internet security mess with the items i put on according to this forum post ?--OTL, malwarebytes, etc.  they are on the desktop & so are the saved .txt,.dat & .ini files which were sent here to my forum.

i'm sorry i'm asking alot of questions, but after having to do so many factory restores due to hackers & such, i want to get things right the first time.  i hate asking for help, but i had no choice this time.  all of you are so great for assisting me, & i thank you all.  i'll do the uninstall after i hear what i am to do next, & then i'll re-install my avast.  i love the avast & you now have a loyal customer.   awaiting your reply ;D

Clean Reinstall:
- Download the latest version of avast AIS, 7.0.1426 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for 5.x, 6.0.x and 7.0.x).
If you have already purchased your license you can enter it:
Insert License Key - Check out these knowledge-base articles for the version you have:
- Inserting the license key into: avast! Free Antivirus (https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=612&nav=0,2,40), avast! Pro Antivirus (https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=682&nav=0,2,40) and avast! Internet Security (http://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=476).

Where you save the key doesn't matter, so long as it is somewhere that you can find it again. If you saved it (license.avastlic) to your download folder that would be fine, it should probably still be there unless you removed it.

You shouldn't need a password, if only you have access to the system, all it is for is to prevent others changing the settings, but that is done from the avastUI, Settings, Password section (see image, click to expand). If you set a password, don't forget it or you would have to reinstall again

ok, it worked, but do i leave the firewall that came with windows & my internet on ?  it shows the windows firewall with the avast firewall.

and in the run>msconfig>startup, it  always said normal startup; now it's selective--load system services & startup items.  do i move it back to normal startup ?  only asking this because the quick scan said it couldn't scan some files.  the ERUNT is the only thing unchecked.

thanks again for the help. ;D
Title: Re: problems with my new avast internet security 7
Post by: DavidR on May 31, 2012, 04:17:05 AM
The avast firewall was designed to be compatible with the windows firewall, so you can opt to leave it on.

I would say that it should be on Normal startup (which I believe is the default), that is what my win7 32bit is on. Generally you would only use the Selective if you were having problems and you didn't want one or more of the sub-options to startup. I think that that may have been changed when you used ERUNT, but I don't know that for sure.

Files that can't be scanned isn't unusual (generally not an indication of them being suspect or infected) and there are many legit reasons why a file can't be scanned.  But we would need more information, e.g. file name, location and the reason why they couldn't be scanned ?

hi again.  boy was i worried about the firewall, so i guess i should be double protected

jeffce had me disable  it as when i rebooted, it kept telling me these ?? wouldn't load things & i just kept clicking yes to continue.

my win 7 has had  too many troubles in the last couple months.  trying so hard to be so secure with firewalls, malware & virus protection that actually works, IE7 security, etc.  i really don't have anything they may want, so i don't understand why these people keep coming back to me, or maybe i just feel like they are.  i really hate hackers.

ok, i feel better, got it out of my system.

if i move the startup to normal, then i can't uncheck the ERUNT because if i uncheck ERUNT, it goes back to the selective.  should i go to normal & see what happens ?

Hi,

Thanks DavidR for the input here.  :D

ERUNT you will want to have remain unselected.  Windows will try to block it from running due to the UAC on your operating system.  So every time you start your system, ERUNT will try to start and you will receive the errors you spoke of before.  Another option would be that we can just remove ERUNT when we are finished.

good morning jeffce & davidr.  did davidr tell you i had to get the revo uninstaller pro as there was no place to get the regular revo ?

i had to do the uninstall of the avast per davidr instructions & then the reinstall.  so far so good, not asking for a password.  no bugs or bad viruses yet.  yea !!

we don't have to uninstall the ERUNT if it will back up my system somewhere.  i have a small portable  pocket media hard drive that hp recommended for my files as i don't download videos or music.  i have to reformat it though as what's on it is from the last time.  i also back up the photos for my businesses with cd's.  i think i'll use the pocket madia hard drive for the downloads, some of the desktop, & the avast internet security if that's ok to do.

glad to see you again jeffce.  davidr was a big help yesterday, had no problems with the uninstall & reinstall.

Hi,

Yes DavidR does great work!  :)

As for ERUNT you can run it manually once a week or so to back up your registry and you will be good to go.  I think you have a good plan for saving your downloads and such as well.

How is your system behaving?

Great!!  Glad to hear!

You have an older version of Adobe Reader.  You can download the current version HERE (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)

You may want to consider   Foxit Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/index.php) instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/forumdisplay.php?f=3)

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 9.3 MUI first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.

i'll be gone for a couple hours, so when i get back i'll see what you recommend for uninstalling adobe.

i'll also let you know if i get attacked by any bad malware or bugs.  can i save my pdf files to a cd & put them back on after i get the foxit reader ?

Hi,

Yes you can just save your PDF files to a CD to save them.  You don't have to remove them from your system though....it's more of a backup just in case, but I have never had a problem.

To remove Adobe you can do so by going to Start >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features and uninstall it from there.  :)

Personally I would only use Revo (for non-security based applications) if the normal uninstall, programs & features, didn't work.
The majority of the times, Revo starts with the normal uninstallation... So, if the normal is failing, the only possibility is the Revo "scanning" after that and basically delete files and registry keys. But it's not safe most of the times (specially with application with drivers and services).

i'll try to do the add/remove the normal way, even though there will still be parts left, right ?  or maybe not.

i love what i read about the foxit reader, & the security they have.  i know for a fact if adobe forgets to update, you are prone to viruses & such.  found this out on my desktop hp.  i'll be back to let you kmnow how the uninstall, reboot, installation of foxit, reboot goes.

hi again.  boy was i worried about the firewall, so i guess i should be double protected
Actually, Avast! Internet Security is designed to work with the Windows 7 firewall running alongside its own firewall, unlike just about all other security solution available to consumers out there.  Other security solutions will insist you turn Windows 7 firewall off to avoid conflict with their firewall.  So, in effect, you would have only one software firewall running.

Windows 7 firewall does offer firewall protection for IPv6, whereas Avast! appears to not cover this.  So, yes, you get double protection when you run both Windows 7 and Avast! firewall together, as one will complement the other in a seamless manner.  Avast! covers IPv4 protocols, and Windows 7 covers IPv6, so they work well together.

If you have Windows 7, this is another reason to love AIS.  Normal best practices would say to only run one firewall at a time, but this is an exception.

I never said use Revo, I qualified the comment:

Quote from: DavidR
I would only use Revo (for non-security based applications) if the normal uninstall, programs & features, didn't work.

Even then that is only if there is no specific uninstall utility from the applications writers.

I have never used Revo as I simply don't feel it is necessary, never been in a situation were I needed a 3rd party uninstall application (Revo or otherwise) and I certainly wouldn't pay for one.

hi mchain & davidr.  davidr, i apologize if you thought i meant you use revo all the time.  i was just trying to lay out the options you guys told me about, i'm sorry davidr.

i don't plan on buying the revo uninstaller, i was following everything i was told to get for my windows 7, trying to fix & correct problems.  i plan to uninstall the revo when i am told to.

mchain, how are you ?  my first responder, thank you for all the help .  yea my laptop here is windows 7.  i know what you mean about others telling you to turn  off the windows firewall, maybe that's where i was hacked as the a/v firewall i did have didn't protect the system like it should have.

oh, jeffce, the norton icon is gone !!  yea !!!  disappeared yesterday.

uninstalled adobe, no problems.  installed foxit reader, awesome !!!!  no bugs, no viruses, so far avast says i'm good.  haven't run malwarebytes since you had me get the last log file.

As for the Revo conversation I think I should apologize for opening that can of worms.  LOL!!  When I had you run Revo it was only after using the normal uninstall procedures as well as the separate uninstall tool both of which had failed.  I agree with DavidR about using the tool on non-security programs and only after the normal uninstall procedures have failed to remove all parts.

Providing there are no other malware related problems...

IT APPEARS THAT YOUR LOGS ARE NOW CLEAN :D  SO LETS DO A COUPLE OF THINGS TO WRAP THIS UP!! :D

This infection appears to have been cleaned, but I can not give you any absolute guarantees.  As a precaution, I would go ahead and change all of your passwords as this is especially important after an infection.
----------

Clean up with OTL:
----------

Any of the logs that you created for use in the forums or remaining tools that have not yet been removed can be deleted so they aren't cluttering up your desktop.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
2. Enable Protected Mode in Internet Explorer.  This helps Windows Vista users stay more protected from attack by running Internet Explorer with restricted privileges as well as reducing the ability to write, alter or destroy data on your system or install malicious code.  To make sure this is running follow these steps:3. Use and update an anti-virus software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to use and update your anti-virus application on a regular basis.  With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

4. Firewall
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.  A tutorial on firewalls can be found here[/color] (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html).  **There are firewalls listed in this tutorial that could be downloaded and used but I would personally only recommend using one of the following two below:
Online Armor Free (http://download.cnet.com/Online-Armor-Free/3000-10435_4-10426782.html)
Agnitum Outpost Firewall Free (http://download.cnet.com/Agnitum-Outpost-Firewall-Free/3000-10435_4-10913746.html)

5. Make sure you keep your Windows OS currentWindows XP users can visit Windows update  (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp)  regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Windows Vista/7 users can open the Start menu > All Programs > Windows Update > Check for Updates (in left hand task pane) to update these systems.  Without these you are leaving the back door open.

6.   WOT   (http://www.mywot.com/) (Web of Trust) As "Googling" is such an integral part of internet life, this free browser add on warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. It is especially helpful when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites.  WOT has an add-on available for Firefox, Internet Explorer as well as Google Chrome.

7.Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?  (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?autocom=custom&page=How_did_I)

@ bambibear,

Well, seeing as to how you now are in the home stretch, I have to say you've done a great job.  Basically, you are now at the point of seeing how your system is running, and letting all of us know when/if all is good.  Running with normal usage for a few days or a week or so should suffice.

If you have the option of setting up some restore discs for Windows 7, and have yet to have done this, might be a good idea?  Otherwise use a good drive imaging program to back up to an external USB drive might save you the hard work/hassle of ever having to do this again.

Here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-drive-imaging-program.htm (http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-drive-imaging-program.htm)   We will, of course, be happy to recommend a good choice for you if the number of choices is daunting.  Just be aware that most of these programs will restore your system back to a time and date when your system was last known to be clean, and consequently any documents or files made since the last backup will be lost.  Backing up newer files on a routine basis will, of course, prevent the loss of files you want to keep.

As a side benefit, restoring from a known good drive image will mean you recover from disaster in minutes instead of days.

As jeffce is the main player here, I view my role here to be supportive.  I certainly will not ever attempt to clean a system as jeffce has, as that would require extensive certification and training and knowledge I do not have.  I've been keeping an eye here, and helping where I can.

Glad to help.

Super job!     ;D

ok, ready to start with step one here.  sorry i'm late.

mchain, i've never had a backup of the windows 7, i don't think.  hp does have a backup for files.  can i do the windows 7 backup to a cd ot dvd ?  how do i back up my system or windows 7, just in case ?  thank you.  i'll be back after i do the OTL.

hi.  i'm doing a system image on dvd's right now, then i'm going to do a system repair disk.  i hope these are my windows 7 backups needed, just in case.

ran OTL, still have all the programs installed per instructions, got rid of the log files.  ran disk cleaner & restarted.

:) hi there..OTL, done.  still have all the programs from here on the desktop.  got rid of all the log files.

finally finished getting the system image dvd's done at 1 a.m., then it did a system boot dvd.  did i do those right ?

all but 1 internet settings were alreadt done that way.  however, i can't see the protected mode icon.  it's no big deal.

virus & spyware--avast internet security.  it's doing it's own updates, love it when it talks to me.  scared ma yesterday as she hadn't heard it.

firewall 3rd party--cnet must've had some major problems yesterday & today.  just now, 3:36 p.m., i'm getting the online armor firewall right now, finally.  nothing in CNET worked.  been using CNET & PSI secunia since they were born, 2 great products.

update for windows, irt also does this automatically, but i still check.

WOT--love this thing.  so far all areas are green, no reds or yellows yet.

now i am running windows 7 home edition;  64 bit.  browser--IE9.  i looked at firefox, google chrome & opera.  what is the best browser for my windows 7 ?  google chrome does have a beta right now, & my businesses have some google connections.  when ma & i had commodo, all we got was trijans, worms, malware, rootkits, etc.  don't ever use commodo of anything.

no viruses this morning.  slow starting from i guess virus updates.

do i need to get any of the spyware protectors mentioned in "how did i get infected "?

have a great day.  time to go get vegies from my garden. ;D

Malwarebytes MBAM is good to have as well as WinPatrol.

I think that it is personal preference.  I am a huge Google Chrome user myself but Firefox and IE are fine as well.

Malwarebytes I recommend everyone have...other programs (besides your antivirus program) are at your own discretion.  :)

hi.  i had problems with the 1st firewall, deleted it & rebooted.  there is a firewall i really like & someone uses it with avast, PrivateFirewall.  also in cnet.  the other 2 don't work with my windows 7, this one does.  but, it has it's own malware defense, will it go with malwarebytes ?  if so, i'll get the PrivateFirewall, as it also has some good comments (can't please every one).  i think it sounds like a great 3rd party firewall.  let me know.

hi YoKenny. ;D  the reason i asked about the browser, was the article i read menrtoned firefox.  but i kinda am used to the new IE9 now, hated IE8.

Hi bambibear,

The minimum number of posts to create a user profile is twenty.  You easily have more than that.

My sig is below my post, just to give you an idea or two.  Sig is, of course, entirely optional.

Happy for you.   :)

Don't overdo installing new programs; get only what you need.  Installing a new program can upset everything and then you have to recover, so...

You will see it after an individuals posts, so there are many examples in the forums.

you know, you should always keep a clean image of windows while storing everything you have and use on a different partition, drive, flash drive, or somewhere else (that is very close by). That way if something horrible happens, jut say screw you and take 10 minutes of your time to apply the image you took.
you can use windows backup and restore or imagex, these don't cost

hi blue_fyre & davidr.  blue_fyre, i did the image thru the windows image.  HP says it backs up the programs, all the system settings;  & files.  i did do a backup to my portable hard drive earlier.  thank you for letting me know, blue_fyre :)

I would take what HP says with a pinch of salt as it has a recovery partition and can indeed restore your system, the problem being is it restores it to the state it was in when it left the factory; not very helpful as you would lose all the changes since that point.

I don't know if HP have subsequently taken to regularly backing up the system, but I suspect not or you should see it in either the task manager or programs and features as an installed application.

good morning davidr.  i went to the control panel > system & security > backup & restore > create a system image first, put on dvd's.  then it asked me if i wanted to do a system repair disk, which i did on a seperate dvd.  then i plugged in the pocket media drive & did a backup of the files & folders, ignoring the pictures as those i backup to cd's.  i also didn't backup the video or music folder as i never get those online, so what i have came with the computer.  i am scheduled for a backup every week, don't know if that's too soon, but that's the default scheduler.  i can set the scheduler to back up whenever i need it to.  did i backup what needed to be backed up right ?  if not, please tell me what i forgot to do.  thanks davidr. ;D

Title: Re: problems with my new avast internet security 7

Personally I find the windows back-up a system image in win7 a bit complex/fiddly, but that is what I use on my win7 netbook and I have it scheduled to run weekly.

In my XP Pro system I use a specific Hard Disk imaging software, where I do a weekly image of my primary hard drive partitions, saving them to a secondary hard drive.

I haven't got ERUNT on either system as I believe the system image/drive imaging software take care of that adequately, so only registry changes that happen after the weekly backup would be lost. But the same would be true of ERUNT unless you had it resident and were doing daily backups (which I feel is a bit overkill).
Title: Re: problems with my new avast internet security 7

hi davidr.  so glad you have a windows 7, to assist with my windows 7.  i thought every week was fine to do, but i thought i'd ask.  i agree with the ERUNT as i don't know where it backs up to.  i think it was jeffce that had me get the ERUNT.

while i have you or anybody that's answered me, do i still keep everything i had to get for the log files--OTL; malwarebytes;  the aswclean.exe;  the aswMBR;  the NTREGOPT that was part of ERUNT, i think.  don't want to delete thru add/remove if they'll be needed.

i wrote personalfirewall as i can't see anything they're doing that my other items are already doing--rapport, DNT plus, avast, etc.

davidr, have you ever used spydoctor ?  if so, is it a good program ?  i was reading about it earlier, & i may get it instead of the personalfirewall.  the personalfirewall is knocking out my windows firewall, i was told i could keep the windows firewall on as it's mainly for my wifi.  thanks ;D

I believe the purpose of Jeff suggesting using ERUNT is during the clean-up process it provides a handy backup of the registry, just in case.

When you feel that your system is running normally, you can report that fact in this topic, then Jeff would have you remove the specialist tools which are not required. OTL and aswMBR are constantly updated, so there is no point in retaining them. Should the need ever arise again you would be told to download the latest versions. The aswclear may be worth keeping should you ever need to do a clean reinstall of avast, but again it is preferable to get the latest version.

I have never used or heard of spydoctor, spyware doctor I have heard of but never used (given you have malwarebytes antimalware, spyware doctor isn't necessary). It shouldn't be a case of getting spyware doctor instead of privatefirewall it far as I'm aware it doesn't have a firewall, so no comparison.

You also have avast Internet Security (AIS), which has a firewall so privatefirewall isn't required unless you aren't using the AIS firewall. It is correct that most 3rd part firewalls disable the windows firewall, unlike the AIS firewall they aren't compatible with the win7 firewall.
Title: Re: problems with my new avast internet security 7
Post by: bambibear on June 05, 2012, 05:40:04 AM
oh, ok.  i apologize about not getting back to you on how my system is behaving.,   i soo forgot.  i'm sorry guys i forgot.  ok, my windows 7 is having no problems, no bugs, running fabulous.   no restart troubles, no problems with anything i can see.  avast is always updating the virus base--good thing, no troubles getting on line or within emails or businesses.

i use the AIS firewall non stop, so maybe i don't need the privatefirewall.  only reason i mentioned the privarefirewall, if i turn it to yellow or monitor, i lose the internet.  the only way the internet will run is if i allow all traffic in the privatefirewall.  so, in my opinion, since i have had no troubles with my AIS so do i need a 3rd firewall ?  also, the privatefirewall won't run with malwarebytes.  just found the modify button.

i removed the privatefirewall, conflicts with the malware & AIS.  i also deleted the regular malwarebytes & paid for the malwarebytes pro.  i figured it was better to stop malware, etc than a firewall.  i hope i did the right thing.  oh, after i uninstalled the privarefirewall, it started so fast & rebooted super fast.  wow.

Absolutely...that is just the reason I did so.  :)  If you would like to keep it that is fine and if not that is fine also.  I run it about twice a month on my system but that is just my preference.  Some people may not do it at all.

Quote
then Jeff would have you remove the specialist tools which are not required.
Back in post 80 you said that you ran OTL Cleanup already and that would remove many of the tools that we used automatically.  Like David said I would hold onto aswClear and of course Malwarebytes you got the Pro version (good choice) so you should be all set with those.  Any of the logs still remaining you can delete via the Recycle Bin and any of the other tools we used that might still be there you can remove to the Recycle Bin as well.  :)

good morning jeffce & davidr.  keep the ERUNT & run it twice a month.  will it back up to a cd or dvd ?

i keep the aswclear & malwarebutes pro.

i remove voa add/remove the aswMBR.   the OTL, which is not anywhere anymore, don't have any idea where it went but i do have another copy in my downloads.

i remove revo uninstaller.

i restart after each removal.

ok, that leaves INTREGORT, that installed with the ERUNT, on the desktop, besides what i keep.

are these directions correct ?  in the downloads, do i just remove the OTL ?  thanks, guys.  you all rock !!!

i got no instructions on how to remove the OTL that i can see

In Post #75 --->
Quote
Clean up with OTL:
Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
----------
:)  If it is still hanging around go ahead and download a new copy like David said and then open OTL and on the main screen press Cleanup.  That will remove OTL and some of the other tools we used.

If aswMBR is still there you can just send that to the Recycle Bin with anything else that you see that we used that you don't want.

To remove Revo Uninstaller you can do so by going to Start >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features >> Revo Uninstaller and select this to uninstall it.  I hope that answers your questions.  :)

good morning jeffce & davidr.

oh, those OTL instructions.  yea, i did that.  but to be sure, i'll run the one from my download folder again.  after rebooting  i'll reopen & do the uninstall.

will do revo thru my add/remove programs.

will also take care of the aswMBR.

thank you everyone for all the help.  i'll let you know if there are problems with the computer's behavior after i do the steps above later.

when i'm done with all those directions, i'll run the ERUNT & INTREGOPT, restarting after each.  thank you

hi all.  the only problems i had was the ERUNT & the INTREGOPT.  they both kept saying access denied.  the ERUNT said it couldn't save anything to the folder, but it would try, & then everything was "access denied".  maybe i should just do the normal windows 7 backup like i was doing & also recommended by davidr ??

malwarebytes--no viruses.  avast--no viruses.  running a full avast scan now, then i'll do a boot scan as i've been adding my pictures back to my picture folder.

should i remove the ERUNT & INTREGOPT since they seem to be not working ?  thank you ;D
Title: Re: problems with my new avast internet security 7

I have never used ERUNT on my win7 system, so I can't comment on the access denied on trying to save to its folder. But I don't know exactly what it was you were doing when you got the access denied message ?

The other point, ERUNT isn't a full back-up function, it is backing up the registry settings only, so even if you kept that you would still have to do the win7 backup that you were doing.

Personally I don't feel that ERUNT is required if you are doing other regular backups that would include the registry.

If you don't want to keep ERUNT that is you choice.  Like David said, it is just used for backing up the registry itself.  I had ran it so that if anything happened during our fixes we had something to back up with.  You can remove it through Start >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features.

@ bambibear,

Tickled pink that your help went so well.

Glad for you (and for us).  Just be sure to get on a schedule of performing at least monthly backups (images) of your system to avoid all the work you had to do this time.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

Feeling a little adventurous?

Ubuntu as a LIVE CD is great for getting files you want to keep should Win 7 ever fail to start by copying and backing up to a backup media and because of that restoring the latest image will remove these files.  Just do a search of all files newer than the last image backup.

Here:  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD)  Please note:  To avoid any complications, do not install Ubuntu, but instead choose to run 'Try Ubuntu without installing' when the keyboard/little man at the bottom of the screen pops up, click enter, in all cases.  That way you will not wind up with two operating systems on the same C:\ drive.  Just restart your system, cd will pop out, remove, and restart your system.  Does take a while to start Ubuntu on a cd as it is not exactly speedy.

Here:  http://www.ubuntu.com/download (http://www.ubuntu.com/download)  Please do not install the Windows Installer unless you are sure of what you are doing.   :)

as fas as installing, anything,  i've never installed, that i know of, things that weren't recommended by hp &/or microsoft.  i don't download videos or music.

here, i've only done here what i was asked to do, via the forum.  granted, my system didn't like some, but those have been removed.

i'll not install the ubuntu, but first & foremost check it out.  if it's not windows 7 compatable, i've found out, it may not work right.

if it's compatable, i'll check it out.  thanks for the info, mchain.

you guys are the best.  ;D 8) :)    i'll let you know if ubuntu & i encounter troubles.

Hi bambibear,

You shouldn't, as Ubuntu is a separate operating system.  When Ubuntu is run as a Live CD, Windows 7 is not running.  So there should be no conflict there.

However, if Windows 7 is a 64-bit system, (I suspect it is, from earlier logs) you may need the 64-bit version of Ubuntu for it to run as it should.

IF Ubuntu is installed within windows, it will behave as a normal windows program, but I do not recommend this, as you can have problems you do not need or want.

Run Ubuntu only as a Live CD, no problems.   :)

i feel dumb.  if i go to download, won't it save it ?  also, do i insert a cd first, then get the ubuntu ?

i understand the part of "try ubuntu without installing", but do i just run the piogram ?

sorry for sounding dumb, but i would like to know so i do it right.  thanks mchain. ;D

Hi bambibear,

This ubuntu is optional, and does not have to be done.  It is merely another good tool to have to prepare for the worst, should it ever happen again.

1.) Yes, when you download Ubuntu it will be saved on your hard drive, most likely in your Downloads folder.

Using the links provided, you will be downloading an .iso file.  Either 32-bit or 64-bit Ubuntu should work for you.

An .iso file is similar to, but different than, all files on your computer.  It is a compressed file, and must be opened (expanded) to utilize the many files within it.  Ubuntu is downloaded as .iso because, when it is expanded onto a hard drive, it will take up more than 2 GB (Gigabytes) of space.  Obviously, compressing the many files that comprise Ubuntu will save time downloading, and also allows the core of the operating system to be placed on a CD-ROM (700 MB).

Latest version of Ubuntu download comes to 701 MB, .iso.

So, merely copying the .iso file to a cd will not work.  You must use a program such as Roxio or Nero, or Imageburn to open the .iso file and then burn it to a cd.

2.) So, it is at this point, you would put the cd in the cd drive.  You then point your Roxio, Nero, or Imgburn program at the .iso file, (double-click? the file) and then the burning process will start.

It is when you burn the .iso file is when you open it and make it bootable.  If done properly, (to check for proper burning) when you open the cd to view the contents inside, you will see several folders.  If no folders are present, then you have not burned the .iso file, but only copied it to the cd.

Imgburn is a free image burning program, essexboy and jeffce have had users use this program from time to time to burn programs needed to clean infected systems.  Personally, I use a vendor paid program, as I find the need to run Nero to burn .iso files more frequently than not.

If only using a burning program infrequently, then Imgburn will suffice.  http://www.imgburn.com/ (http://www.imgburn.com/)  Use the latest version, ImgBurn v2.5.7.0, and this should work for you.

You can always uninstall Imgburn when done and get another copy if you need it later.

To clarify, Ubuntu is a different and separate operating system from Windows 7.  Windows 7 cannot see Ubuntu, but Ubuntu can see Windows 7, and that difference is useful when 7 will not start.  You will be able to perform the same copy/paste functions within Ubuntu as you can in 7, and thus save any files you wish to keep should 7 ever fail to start.

As long as you never install Ubuntu on your hard drive, run only as 'Live CD' (Try Ubuntu without installing) you will be fine.

What running Ubuntu as a Live CD means is, the entire operating system is running in system memory only (Ubuntu, that is), no part of Ubuntu is ever installed onto your hard drive (unless you tell it to).  Running in memory means that Ubuntu will disappear completely (poof!) when you restart your system after you are done with your session in Ubuntu Live CD, and Windows 7 will never know.  Windows 7 will not be affected as long as you do not install Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is just a very useful tool when disaster strikes, is all.

Follow the above steps, and all should work out.

@ bambibear,

Sorry for the mistake, but Windows 7 already has the ability to burn an .iso file.

No need to get third-party software to get this done.  If all you need to do is burn an .iso file, then Windows 7 should suffice.

Here is a review of CyberLink Power2Go Essential (free) here:  http://www.downloadcrew.com/article/25633-power2go_8_essentia (http://www.downloadcrew.com/article/25633-power2go_8_essentia)

If this software is not listed on http://www.filehippo.com/ (http://www.filehippo.com/), then I do not use it.  What that means is, file hippo only puts software on their site they trust and is known good and safe.

For example, I do not use C|net Downloads because sometimes their installer comes with unwanted junk such as rogue toolbars; file hippo does not.  C|net editorial staff has not reviewed this software either, and has the vendor review in place instead.  Not a good sign.

Here:  http://download.cnet.com/CyberLink-Power2Go-Essential/3000-2646_4-84589.html (http://download.cnet.com/CyberLink-Power2Go-Essential/3000-2646_4-84589.html)

Google here is your best friend when considering downloading and installing new software, research, research, research.  Anytime new software is installed, your system will change irrevocably, and sometimes not for the better.

I also try to avoid registering free software where I can (except, of course, avast!) and this page calls for registration, so no.

This strategy will save you from grief in the future; research what you need and make the best choice available.   :)

I think you need to use Chrome for Avast! to scan browser based email systems.

No. WebShield scans http traffic of all browsers. Encrypted traffic is not scanned by any antivirus for logical reasons.

hi everyone.  my aunt has moved to her own room, gets to go home nexr week.  chemo starts tomorrow, tuesday jine 25th.  just wanted to ypdate you all.

computer has had no problems, except avast says it can't scan all files since it can't find something.

happens in both the quick scan (C:\User\all users) & the full scan (c:\users\bambeyette\...\fbp.tmp).

however, the dates it shows this for is:  6-5, 6-6, 6-9, & 6-23.

all other times & days, no viruses were found.  any ideas what it can't scan ?

malwarebytes has found nothing to date.

question, do i need a spyware protector with my avast internet security ?

thanks for waiting for an answer. ;D

Hi bambibear,
Always quarantine, never delete.

A malicious file is safe in the quarantine folder, cannot harm your system while in there, and can be safely deleted from there after waiting at least two weeks.  If, after two weeks, it is still malicious, then and only then should you delete it.  You can check this file to see if it is clean or not by scanning the file within the quarantine folder at any time and take the appropriate action you think best.

Remember, you can always leave the file in quarantine indefinitely, no harm can be done by leaving it there.

Mawarebytes works well with Avast! when in active protection mode.  You can only get that protection by purchasing the paid version, but purchasing is only a one-time lifetime licence deal.  Spybot is not so good IMO.

Update the definitions for Malwarebytes and run a scan once a week should be good enough.  Updates for Malwarebytes occur several times a day, seven days a week, and is automatically updated with the paid full version.

Hope your aunt gets better.

Take care.   :)

hi mchain.  sorry for all the typos earlier.

ok, i had the scan for pup checked, fixed now.

i thought i had to run a daily scan.  boy, what a relief i don't.

i also fixed the "delete if something found" options.  changed them to "ask", since the "move to virus chest" was the first option.

i have the protection mode enabled in malwarebytes.  i paid for the pro version when you all were fixing the problems, i think on page 7.  anyway, yes, i have the paid version of malwarebytes.  it does update alot, which is really good.  then i know it's working.

thank you for being so smart.  i didn't know that an archived file couldn't hurt my system though.

thank you also for answering me.

so far, the chemo & radiation are running her down :(, but i hope they're doing the job taking care of the cancer :).

thank you again, mchain :D
