Ok...gotta try something different. Have been using Avast for the last couple of years and I love it. However, since downloading Avast 5, I am having great difficulty in getting it to update new virus definitions (current version is 100603-1 and I still have 100401-0). Program version is 5.0.462. It just refuses to update. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling, turning off firewall, etc etc. Any other ideas or others with this same problem??
-
First download and install the latest 5.0.545 and see if that will fix it...

These are the update settings that works for me.....

Run a program update the latest is 5.0.545 like Pondus said. ;)
-
That's the problem - it won't update. I did just download the newest program version - however, again, the virus definitions are still out of date and will not update. Now the virus def version is 1100524-1
-
what firewall do you have ?
have you tried uninstalling it ?
-
I have PC Tools Firewall...I turned it off to try to allow Avast updates but that didn't work. PC Tools and Avast worked together before, I really do not want to uninstall the firewall.
-
Yes but you can install it again, it is to see if the firewall is the problem....
Have you tried the settings in the post above and reboot ?

'Refuse to update', what does this mean? Does it notify you an error occured or nothing happended when clicking 'uodate now'?
-
What I mean by refuses to update, I mean that when I select the "update" program or virus def button, it looks like it's going to update, but than abruptly stops and tells you 3s or 4s (3 or 4 seconds I assume)...there is never any error message.

Until you get this fixed you can download the accumulated VPS updates here. (31 Mb!!)

Btw, which other security related programs are running on this machine..?

Other security related products running are Malwarebytes, Super AntiSpyware, Ccleaner, Ncleaner, Adaware

I don't know about Ncleaner, but you should get rid of Adaware...!!!
All others run well with avast.

Ok, I will..I don't really use it anyhow. Btw, thanks for the accumulated virus file link..that worked like a charm. I guess if I can't get the updates to work I can at least do that.

The one simple thing that solved a similar problem I had was to change the proxy setting to "Direct Connection" (as suggested by asyn)

I am having this problem too. I shut down my Comodo firewall and it still doesn't update. When I go in to the Avast Summary page, it says my definition is out of date. When I click Update it goes through the process and says that my definition is "already up to date (current version 100614-0)".
I am running on Vista Home Premium and it is Avast version 5.0.545. My Windows Security Alert says that Avast reports that it may be out to date.
Is this just a reporting problem and in actuality it is running the current definition update?
I ran the VPSUpdate file and that says "VPS database is already up to date"
-
robertl4, is your system time and date correct?
Any old antivirus in this machine? Any other security program that could interfere?

Date and time are correct.
The only other security products I use are Comodo Firewall and the built in Windows Vista stuff. Avast has always worked perfectly with this exact same computer and set up until this newest upgrade. I haven't used any AV product except Avast for several years.

Did you restart your machine after this occured..?
If not, please do so..!

Can you remove avast entries into the Comodo firewall applications settings and try to manual update, allowing avast to access again?
-
I did restart and I did remove all entries from Comodo firewall to reset them all.
I don't know if this will help, but I attached 2 jpg's.
avast2.jpg is after I click update from the Summary page.

Comodo is white-listing avast per default..!
So, if the user didn't play with the settings, there would be no need to do that.
Also the user stated that he already shut down the Comodo FW...

So, after all, you are up to date..!!
Wait until the next vps-update, this should solve this little glitch..!

I don't know, am I up to date? When I go back to the summary page, it still says that I am not up to date. I will see what it says after the next definition release.
Thanks.

Yes, you're up to date, as shown in avast2.jpg, you posted.
Please report back here, if it's gone after the next definition update..!

g'day guru's...
I am getting a very similar problem to Robertl4.
Yep. It just updated and all looks well now.
So are you saying that if i download the offline VPS definition files that it should fix my issue??
I actually DL'd yesterdays file and I still cannot do automattic updates...
I am using a proxy; all PC's except 1 can update automatically.
already configured proxy setting. Offline VPS definitions have been installed and definitions are up to date.
However every time I run an update from within avast i get a "could not connect to server" response.
i also re-downloaded the latest avast build from cnet and have used the avast removal utility
I think this one PC is most likely compromised, any suggestions before i rebuild?
thanks

First,
I would uninstall your current version and get the latest version from Avast's website, www.avast.com I have Engine and Virus Definition updates set to Automatic, and Program updates set to "Ask When Update is Available." Turn Off "Only connect through a dial up modem" and have On "My computer is always connected to the Internet."
I have Proxy settings turned off and just have "No Proxy" selected instead of "auto detect." Seems to work better.
After you uninstall and get the newest version make sure you go to Maintenance and click on that tab to register it. Fill out the form and submit it. You should now be updated within about a minute or so. Note that if you ever need to reinstall the program you will need to get a new license key.
If the above doesn't work, the next step is to go to Control Panel, "Add/Remove Programs" than click on Avast! When you click on Remove, don't click on the Uninstall prompt but click on "Repair." The repair utility should fix any problems with the program.

Hello,
I have the same problem :(. It doesn't want to update, I tried all settings but still doesn't work. Even the register window doesn't want to open/connect, it's like I would not be connected to the internet. So I can't update it nor register...
I installed it on laptop - wireless connection. There is integrated (I think) IBM firewall installed on it - ISS Proventia Desktop. Could that cause problems? I tried to turn it off but same problem.
-
Aragot, can you manually update? Which is the error message?
Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
(or the shorter C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log).
-
I get no error message :-\, it's like it's going to update but it can't connect. I was able to update it manually but I would prefer it updates auto. and so I'll be able to reg. too :P.

17:57:02 dbg/int while trying to get file 'servers.def', error 0x20000004 has occured...
0x20000004 error is a "proxy down" error, i.e., server unreachable (or, in other words, "cannot connect to the updating server"). Is there any other Firewall installed on the machine besides Windows own firewall? Have you had any previous anti-virus program installed on this computer before installing avast? The last way is check your hosts file to see if there are any entries that could be blocking avast's update servers. A blank "default" configuration of the windows hosts file should basically have only one entry (127.0.0.1 localhost).
18:16:13 min/gen szKey: 99999999-9999-9999-9999-999999999999
Did you register your avast version?
-
ISS Proventia Desktop firewall (IBM firewall (integrated)) is installed on laptop. I tried to shut it down but same problem.
I had an AVG anti-virus program installed but I also used removal tool which should remove it?
I have the same problem with registering as I have with updating, when I click on register button in program the "window" for register won't open / connect - it's loading but after few seconds it's stops and doesn't show it. (Can you register online and put the serial key manually?)
Where is this "host" file, so I would be able to see? :-\

Use the search function of your system.
Search for 'hosts' - you can look at it with any texteditor.

The program update doesn't work either and anyway it's already version 5.0.545.
Ok this is strange now, if I want to update it manually (if I click update in program) I can't but it seems it does update automatically, I get a message that the database was updated??? Current dat. ver. 100617-0
And I still can't register...
If I try to "search" for hosts files I only get a folder of ISS Proventia Desktop with different IP files (6), but none of them is 127.0.0.1 localhost or windows one. ???
-
It's updating normally now, but do not know how, I didn't do anything ^^ :)
But register still doesn't work so I filled out that form on official web page and will enter the key manually.
Thank you for your time & help!

already configured proxy setting.
For what? No proxy at all or automatic?
Hi tech,
I had configured my proxy setting (use http proxy, with auth).
Fresh install of latest Avast does not fix.
I am pretty sure a rebuild of windows will fix it, but the user of this PC does not want a fresh install of XP.
Once the Avast proxy agent is broken (from what I have found) there is no solution on this forum:
except when: change to no proxy (Port 80 must be open on perimeter firewall)
Using IE settings fails as my proxy requires auth (avast update will fail stating i need auth).
one possible way is to open Avast update websites via by perimeter firewall. To do this I would need to grab all IP addresses of Avast server's from server.def and create a new access rule to allow these websites through my firewall from my internal LAN.
which I have not done yet...
