can't turn on Avast Internet Security Firewall.
« on: February 16, 2010, 01:34:41 PM »
After installing Avast Internet Security on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and rebooting, it told me my system is not fully protected.
When I open Avast it shows the firewall is turned off and i can't start the service or turn it on.

thanks in advance.

Have you tried avast repair and reboot?

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

did it work?

installing and uninstalling about 8 or 9 times. Nothing I do turns the firewall on! Does anyone have a solution?
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

I was actually just able to get the "repair" function to fix the issue.
Lucky you. Thanks for posting back.

I tried all these steps and still the firewall won't turn on. I am running Avast Internet Security on XPpro x64.
I have an external adsl modem that has a built-in firewall - could this be the source of the problem? Or does that mean I am infected? I tried running Avast in safe mode to scan my computer, but it does not seem to run properly in safe mode...
Grateful for help!
Thanks

rosatif, hardware router/firewall shouldn't be a problem.
Also, it's better to schedule a boot time scanning with avast.

Did you have any other firewall or suite before AIS?

Thanks. Avast says the boot time scanning is only available for the 32 bit version, so I can't run this.

I only had Windows firewall I think - and I still do.
I also had the free version of Avast installed (which does not include a firewall, I think).

Boot time scanning on x64 is scheduled for avast 5.1 (but it will take months...).
Meanwhile, you can try avast at logon time.
You can download it here: http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/avastEvangelist/avast_at_logon_by_Tech.exe

OK, thanks a lot for this. I ran a quick scan at log on, using your app. It ran nicely on my XP 64, but it did not find any threat.
So I am back at square one, namely, what is preventing Avast from turning the firewall on?
Thanks!
Francesco

What is preventing Avast from turning the firewall on?
1. An old avast installation and not properly uninstalled. Maybe searching for "aswNdis" references into C:\Windows\Inf\oem*.inf files. You can use Windows Search or FileSeek (http://www.binaryfortress.com/fileseek/) for that. Then you can move the files to another folder. Boot. Try installing again.

2. An old 3rd party firewall not properly uninstalled.
