- IS firewall: solved a potential crash when saving the packet rules
- IS firewall: fixes for Internet Connection Sharing

Thank you
Vlk

I have it configured to "Ask when an update is available" (a program update, that is).  The main window says "A new version of the program is available!".  So OK, if avast! knows an update is available, why didn't it ask?  If I hadn't checked the GUI myself, I wouldn't have known.

@marquita188

did you reboot after install ?
have you tried avast repair and reboot ?

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

it's just like that...to avoid overloading the servers. If everybody was warned at the same time, ie immediately after a new version was available, nobody could get it. From what I read it takes about a week or so until all Avast users get the message. It's just technically impossible to proceed differently due to the amount of users, and Avast isn't Microsoft ;) (note that Windows Update servers are damned slow ;D ...fortunately it's never more than a few megs a week )

I was at Avast Free V5.0.462, and received the popup alert that a new version was available for update.  Clicked on it and update went fine.  Update to V5.0.507, rebooted when requested and then did a full scan.  Good job, Alwil!!

Hehe and can it handle 5,000 program updates per second? (on average)
And can it serve a petabyte of data in a few hours? :)

I think you're not realizing the sheer size of the avast user base.

Alwil software currently has 334 update servers (servers.def file).

My manual update from the UI went smoothly as usual even on dial-up it didn't take long, though the incremental program update 5.0.462 - 5.0.507 was less than a MB if I remember rightly.

So for those who think they are slow, try dial-up for a week :P

Maybe a dumb question, but I have to ask it:
Do you still need to register the free version of avast 5?

I updated my 4.8 to 5.0.507 today. My old registration will expire in 10 days and I have not found any way to request a registration update on the web page (only for 4.8), nor any way to add new licence information. I only get a page in avast where my old registration is shown with the mark that it will end in 10 days.

Did I miss something?

Regards,

Christian.

Isn't there a "Register Now" button? (on the registration page).
Also, on the Current status page, isn't there a banner that says that your registration will expire in 10 days and a Register Now button?

Thanks

I meant as a mirror, not as one server that can handle the full load.  I thought that would have been obvious.  Every mirror helps.  But never mind...

It really worked well.
Now to see if this new release fixes the manual updating issue I have been experiencing.
Thank you for the great program.   :)

Got it, sorry for that. We want to keep all the infrastructure under our control though...

Well we recently started using LimeLight as well, but most of the updates are still coming from our own servers.

Another thing is downloads - most of these (in the English-speaking countries) are routed via download.com

Thanks

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Then try a manual update again.

I've just update today. Version 5.0.507 updates from 5.0468 version and runs softly on my computer(Windows vista) ;D , and the thing I really want to say is VietNamese language appearing in this version very well. Hahahaha.

Darn! I should've waited to reformat my computer!

(Download.com still has the previous release. Ack!)

Just curious, what's the usual turn around for the latest build to be available for download at Cnet?

Pardon me as I transition...! xD  Thanks!

(I updated AIS on another computer, & it went so smoothly! 8) )

Edit: I decided I couldn't wait & just reinstalled AIS. It just gave me the update prompt. I checked download.com again & the new build was not there yet. I will probably check every day to see how long it will take for my own info.

~sigh~ My post got lost in this thread.... ~shrugs~ Oh well....

Edit 2: It may have gotten lost, but I did find AIS .507 at http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe .... ...can now do a fresh install....  :)

Maybe I need glasses, but you need understanding lessons for sure:  the sentence you are referring to, does NOT say in any way, shape or form, that there is ACTUALLY  an overload problem, Logos is just explaining how is avast supposedly avoiding the overload in the first place, but guess what, I already updated successfully, so please do not bother to reply to this post.

I cant update from 504 to 507 either, It says package broken and ive tried a repair and tried again but still no luck.

I'm in the same boat.  Windows 7 x64, AIS 5.0.504 and virus definition or 100413-1.  Both virus definition and program update shows "package is broken" when updating.  I've repaired, but to no avail.

Updated OS from xp home to xp pro and installed avast 5. While the program does its job I have no notification sounds.  avast antivirus is not even listed in the program events list.
I know this is probably the wrong place to post the rest of this but I am going to anyways.
I have checked the sounds are enabled within the avast program and that the sound files are physically on my hd. have uninstalled and reinstalled and still nothing..... any  ideas?

Can you access the avastUI and is everything else okay other than sounds?
I'm not sure what is programs event list.

perhaps avast sounds ruled off by somewhere else - firewall or Control Panel in Windows or Audio program

I was unaware update was happening at the time

Do I send the mini dumps to verify and where to?

How do you disable self-defense?  I just installed the new 507 build on XP and didn't do any customizing.  When I uncheck enable self-defense and close and reopen it is always checked again.

Nevermind.  I restarted the computer and now I can do it.  I was just testing it to see if I might want to run it as an on-demand only program.  But it does seem to work very well with everything running.

that's not good... this is the behavior you get normally in safe mode only, because services aren't started, so settings can't be changed. Are you sure that your shields are running? Is any other change in the settings taken into account, ie retained?

I cant update from 504 to 507 either, It says package broken and ive tried a repair and tried again but still no luck.

I'm in the same boat.  Windows 7 x64, AIS 5.0.504 and virus definition or 100413-1.  Both virus definition and program update shows "package is broken" when updating.  I've repaired, but to no avail.

Just tried again - this time it worked.

I have mentioned in another topic that you started that there is no direct update via the GUI in 4.8 to 5.0.

When you check for updates in 4.8 it is looking for updates of 4.8 and you have the latest version. It requires that you download the 5.0 installation file and install over the top.

Hi

Avast 5 Free - Version.. 5.0.462 - to - 5.0.507 ... Not Good!  :(

Just updated my Laptop
Vista Home Premium 32bit
4 GB Ram
Intel Core 2 Duo

Avast 5 seems to be working OK  :-\
But... Windows Security Centre Does NOT Recognise Avast 5 Is Installed  :'(

Won't be updating my Desktop just yet then.

Hi

Just updated my Desktop computer - & - All seems perfectly fine  :D
So!
In The Morning... Looks like I'll just have to do a clean install on my Laptop.

Hally

Had a bit of a rough time with my laptop  :'(

Started to uninstall Avast 5 - Got to the bit that says Registry - Stuck There!  :o
Half an hour later...
Clicked Cancel - & - Booted in to Safe Mode to run the Avast 5 Uninstall Utility.
Anyway!
I've now got Avast 5 back installed on my laptop  :D
And... Touch Wood!
All Seems Well!  8)

I apologise, I really didn't see that. When I now tried to download the new version from Avast site I got this message: http://www.avast.com/en-eu/http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-85737&subj=dl&tag=button&__utma=1.1118222121.1271342766.1271342766.1271342766.1&__utmb=1.4.10.1271342766&__utmc=1&__utmx=-&__utmz=1.1271342766.1.1.utmcsr=google.si|utmccn=%28organic%29|utmcmd=organic|utmctr=avast&__utmv=-&__utmk=78257428 (http://www.avast.com/en-eu/http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-85737&subj=dl&tag=button&__utma=1.1118222121.1271342766.1271342766.1271342766.1&__utmb=1.4.10.1271342766&__utmc=1&__utmx=-&__utmz=1.1271342766.1.1.utmcsr=google.si|utmccn=%28organic%29|utmcmd=organic|utmctr=avast&__utmv=-&__utmk=78257428)

Edit:

I just noticed that this link on Avast's site is not directed properly and it also leads to the previous version. Where can I download the latest version to upgrade from 4.8 to 5?

I'm sorry for being a pain in the ***.

Edit 2:

Nevermind, I just found the latest version here: http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html

And thank you! :)

Yes this is as expected. The UI is somewhat self-updatable (may use some remote content).

I had this issue with 5.0.462, and after updating to 5.0.507 it still exists.
In a nutshell, the program will not manually update when a new definition version is available.
Forex, right now, current version is 100415-1.
It has already automatically installed on one of my computers.
The other one still has 100415-0.
When I attempt to manually update, all I get is:
"Already up to date (current version 100415-0)".
I tried repair with v5.0.462, but so far have not tried repair on 5.0.507.
Any suggestions from Vlk?

I would just like to say to avast staff to keep up the hard work.

Ps: I have used avast antivirus free edition software for about three years now.

From what I can gather it is for pre-defined scans. So I tried a scan that will always give me a result (removable media = errors - not relevant)

When that setting is checked, at the end of the scan, the results will be displayed automatically.

I can't update from .492 to the latest. It always says it needs to update and it attempts to download and install and then tells me it's already at the latest (.507) when it's not. What gives? This has been happening on and off. And where do I get the latest download? When I attempt to download from the website, I get .492 which is what I already have and it won't update.

Getting frustrated.

UPDATE: Okay. Downloaded the .492 from the site (cannot find .507 anywhere). Uninstalled the previous .492 version, rebooted. Installed the new .492 I just downloaded, rebooted. It started telling me .507 was ready for download. Told it to do so. After a few minutes, it said I was already up-to-date. I rebooted just to see what would happen and nope, still at .492 and it's still telling me .507 is available.  ::)

WHAT IS GOING ON??? Very frustrating. Why can't I update to the latest version of Avast IS? I'm about ready to ask for my money back because this isn't the first time this has happened.

And why can't I get the latest version (.507) anywhere?

Have you reboot your system after "updating"?
Please try!

Good luck! ;)

You don't find the download of the latest version immediately - you have to wait "a little time", till the manuel downloads on the servers are up-to-date!

Yup. I did an update and reboot. It's strange. In the top part, it says I'm up-to-date with version 5.0.507, yet down in the bottom part of the screen, it says the engine is still at .492 and .507 is ready for downloading.

Perhaps it is important -in your special case- WHERE you start the update.

There are 2 ways to do this:

in picture 1 right next to the point "Update engine and virus definitions".
You can't see it here on the picture, but the button appears when an update is available;

in picture 2 you can start directly with the button "Update Program".

Try the two ways - perhaps you get the result you want!!!

It's just an idea -- and sorry for my bad English, but I hope, you know what I mean...

I was getting errors about my license being expired (doesn't expire until 2012) trying to install the latest update through the updater. I got around that by downloading the 5.0.507 setup file and installing it directly overtop my current install. Everything updated ok that way. Maybe this would help you too. I'm at work right now, so I don't have the URL for the setup program.

Windows XP.

Was prompted to update from older version....did so....but system wont actually start running  ???

Status reads: Unsecured, but wont respond to "fix now" or "start program".

System shields all read "unknown" and when you hit start say "system shield unreachable"

Update definitions and virus definitions all read "unknown"

I have rebooted, and un-installed and reinstalled....no change.

Tried update, and it just responds that the service is not running.

I am NOT computer wise....so any advice needs a step by step...and possible baby talk  :-[

I guess I'll just have to wait. I don't understand why this doesn't work and I wish someone from Avast would respond.

Looking for some advice.

Upgraded to 5.0.507 on a DELL laptop, running Windows 7 Ultimate x64,  and a full or quick scan results in everything locking up.  However, uninstalled and reinstall version 4.8 and now experiencing the same problem where a full or quick scan locks up the PC.

I have installed 507 succesfully on a Windows XP (x86) machine and a Windows 7 ultimate PC (x64) and everything working as expected.

Any pointers would be great?

May I ask where you got .507 from? Is this .507 for the Antivirus only or for the Internet Suite? When I download the internet suite, I get .462.

Thanks!

OK, I'm getting really frustrated.

I've tried implementing advice I've seen given for other posts....but nothing is helping.

tried going through add/remove programs and doing "repair" but that changes nothing.

All attempts to update show "failed...service is not running"

tried un-installing and re-installing.....same results, it's there but not running.

tried un-installing and replacing with the older version, and I don't even show the old version on my system.

I've sent two seperate messages to TS, but have gotten no response.

To save to desktop is to click "save" instead of "run" when you download.  Choose to save to desktop, this will make it easy to find for when you install avast.

Restart your computer & keep pushing f8 till your computer goes into safe mode.

love the update having no issues (except the few normal ones also from previous builds but nothing major) but otherwise this new build is running great!! still have the firewall rule issues with it when you delete a rule say for a program to update it does not re-create it if you try re run the update after deleting the rule. also if you delete the firewall zone it will not re-detect and create the zone again either. otherwise seems fine

What a pity, I thought one of the two update-ways could be the solution for your problem.

Sorry, I haven't another idea what you can try additionaly. :-[
Deinstall with the avast! removal-tool und reinstall once more - I think, this make no sense, but otherwise, what could you lose?!

The reason is that when I installed 507,BSOD's galore when browsing using Firefox.Removed 507 and cleaned up with with v5 removal tool.Still had the 462 version file on my PC and so far,is stable as it was before.

Works great and also scanning my complete system (xp - sp3) now doesnt take hours (or a day).
Woow it's fast now with scanning  ;D

What i'm missing is the option block urls so i hope some can say where it is.

I know in 4.8 it was there and i can find it with my eyes closed, but now i can't find it  :(

It would be best to start a new topic in this sub forum; the "new topic" button is near the top right of the thread list.

In this thread please list your OS, Avast version installed, any previous AV or firewall installed, even if removed, and the name of the program you've downloaded, plus any information about messages displayed regarding blocking of same. Where did you get this downloaded program that is blocked?

Have just given up on version 5 and installed Microsoft Security Essentials instead. After several days of trying to get version 5 to work I have now uninstalled it and gone to Microsoft for the first time ever. My problem was that each time I rebooted, the whole system would just hang. The only way that I could use Version 5 to was to use the Hibernate option. If I wanted to do a total reboot I would have to close down Avast and restart it after the reboot. I am using XP Home Edition.

Final straw was when the whole machine hung when I went into emaIl (I use Thunderbird) after leaving the machine idle for a couple of hours. I had to power off and the machine hung when I rebooted. This is after trying all the work-arounds that I could find for the various problems encountered.

Shame, as I really liked the look of the new version. I will try re-installing it in a few months time.

Very easy.open up the main program and select Settings in the right hand corner, select sounds and then uncheck  "enable avast sounds" then click ok down the bottom to apply the changes

All the events options below will grey out and all sounds will be disabled

Hi

I have a continual problem with version 5.0.507 where the program stops and I have to "fix now" because system is unsecured. It happens more on my Vista machine than my Windows 7 machine. It also brings up connection errors in Firefox.
Please advise how I can fix this.

Thanks

Your question would require more information and that would be best done in its own topic.

- Please start a New Topic of your own as this will just confuse the topic (or get lost in this long topic) and we will try to help.
- Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0), click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there.

Awesome!

Installing over version 4 seems to be working. Installing from scratch doesn't work - tried many times, but didn't work. Instead, installed over 5. Works like charm. Welcome version 5.

Thanks

Same here, but I think this is not a bug... the window is minimized and move to the left corner on my computer, and this movement is natural in some applications.
However, your issue may see as a little strange behavior. (I found Minimize / Maximize button occasionally appears when I click minimize title-bar ::))

Anyway, welcome to the forums :)

NON, this is for a context menu scan?

This did happen with the scan logs before, but that was fixed. Looks like it is also present when minimising the context menu scan window...

It happens here as well. When this happened with the scan logs they removed the function to minimise it so that may have to be done here as well, although I think this would be in the next program update...

For now, it can be right clicked, and then restore can be clicked.

I updated to 5.0.507 a week ago (Not the free version) compuetr slowed to a crawl absolute mess. Something called aswrundll.exe was causing havoc with cpu usage.
Internet was slower than dialup and took forever to do simle tasks.
I Unistalled avast and bingo computer back to it's normal speed - Pentium D 3.2 Ghtz 3gig ram XP pro.
To say the least I am not impressed. Ihave used Avast for three years free version.

I am convinced there is a bug with Avast 5.0.507

Any comments would be welcome

Thanks

I have 5.0.507 now, but still find I cannot upgrade to Avast! IS, as the system clashes with the Acer Aspire Fingerprint Security.

I am sure this is a serious issue for many Avast! V5 IS users, so I hope that it is being addressed by the team.

I paid for IS V5, but have been unable to use it since purchase, more than 2 months ago! I am hanging on in the hope that the fix will soon be offered.

I asked the support team, but they asked me to upgrade the fingerprint system driver - I have the latest one and it still crashes, so I think the problem is with the Avast! IS, not the fingerprint security.

I CAN run Avast! V5 Antivirus, just cant use the Internet Security.

Any thoughts?

Yea, downgrade to 4.8.

All problems will be solved.

We need to start solving the processor and memory leak with this program and not the needless other stuff.

Why is avast ignoring the problems with this new AV?

This morning I removed Norton Internet Security 2009 from client computer running Windows 7.
- first standard uninstall using Revo
- then ran Norton/Symantec removal [24] http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/2009/11/1-having-trouble-uninstalling-your-anti.html
- then manual clean Norton/Symantec leftovers from the Registry (but left the legacy drivers)

downloaded and installed Avast! Free, registered product, updated, and ran boot-time scan.

avast 5.0.507 - so far all good - owner advised to ring me if problems.
any issues, I will post to this thread - up until there is a program update.

@nighttree: when you switch to a different page, what exactly is slow? Just GUI? Try run Task Manager (taskmgr.exe), go to "Processes" tab, do you see high CPU usage? Thanks.

New minor bug:

Image:
Url: http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/201/bugr.gif (http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/201/bugr.gif)

In the image you can see that the text "Ayuda" (In english "help") is displaced a pixel when the window is in the background.

It is a minimum error but it would be nice to fix it for the new version.

I also like that you add a button to empty the Virus Chest.

Hello simbustar and welcome to the forum!

You don't need to open the avast-homepage for registration.
You can do it into the program itself at version 5 Free.
Just write your e-mail in the registration and send it to avast.
You don't need a registration-key!!!

There's nothing more to do. ;)

@nighttree: when you switch to a different page, what exactly is slow? Just GUI? Try run Task Manager (taskmgr.exe), go to "Processes" tab, do you see high CPU usage? Thanks.

Nothing like that listed under "processes" ......
Under "performance" there is a CPU usage gage that is rapidly bouncing from low numbers (0 to 4) to numbers as high as 100.

What that means is beyond me however  :-[

What "appears" to be happening, is that Avast takes several minutes to scan every page change I make, and it's getting slower every day. As of this morning it took over ten minutes just to go from one e-mail page to another after clicking delete.

Edit: After looking at the processes page again, there is a column called CPU.....most of the listed items are at 00.
System idle process is jumping from numbers in the fifties to 99 rapidly and consistantly.
WUSB54GC.exe jumps from single digit numbers to high sixties.
All other systems show little or no change.

So now the BIG question.....what does that mean ???

hi nighttree

I think you will find that the problem is yr linksys connection manager
- you are using linksys utility to configure wireless rather than Windows which performs config better

quick test - go to Services and see if you can change the entry to manual rather than automatic - then Restart
Services - Start->right-click (My)Computer-> select Manage -> click thru Services and Applications to Services window

There are other ways to switch wireless config from linksys utility to Windows - search WUSB54GC.exe on Google

what is yr operating system how much ram?
what other antivirus / antispyware are you running or were previously?

have you made any changes lately?

you can check logs if you want for errors (this is just speculation just in case)
- Start->rightclick (My)Computer->Manage-> Event Viewer - check in System and Applications
- only look for something out of order that may be causing a conflict
or
- Start->rightclick (My)Computer->Manage-> click through Services and Applications until get to Services
- check entries under avast - make sure they are started
   In mine Services (XP)
- avast antivirus is started and automatic
- avast Mailscanner is started and manual
- avast Web scanner is started and manual

Another option is to do a Repair - Windows Add/Remiove programs
- click uninstall/change to bring up avast module - scroll down to Repair and run

Also and perhaps first if recently updated, Restart a couple of times and see if icon comes back

It does work, it just doesn't show any results if the download is clean, if it is infected then you will see it alert.

Go to this site, http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm (http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm) and download one of the eicar.com files (using HTTPS, otherwise the web shield would alert if using HTTP). Now you will actually get two alerts as the file when saved to the hard disk (being a .com file) will be scanned by the File System Shield
