I was at Avast Free V5.0.462, and received the popup alert that a new version was available for update.  Clicked on it and update went fine.  Update to V5.0.507, rebooted when requested and then did a full scan.  Good job, Alwil!!

it's just like that...to avoid overloading the servers. If everybody was warned at the same time, ie immediately after a new version was available, nobody could get it. From what I read it takes about a week or so until all Avast users get the message. It's just technically impossible to proceed differently due to the amount of users, and Avast isn't Microsoft ;) (note that Windows Update servers are damned slow ;D ...fortunately it's never more than a few megs a week )

I have a web server they can use if they like...

Hehe and can it handle 5,000 program updates per second? (on average)
And can it serve a petabyte of data in a few hours? :)

I think you're not realizing the sheer size of the avast user base.

Alwil software currently has 334 update servers (servers.def file).

My manual update from the UI went smoothly as usual even on dial-up it didn't take long, though the incremental program update 5.0.462 - 5.0.507 was less than a MB if I remember rightly.

So for those who think they are slow, try dial-up for a week :P

Maybe a dumb question, but I have to ask it:
Do you still need to register the free version of avast 5?

I updated my 4.8 to 5.0.507 today. My old registration will expire in 10 days and I have not found any way to request a registration update on the web page (only for 4.8), nor any way to add new licence information. I only get a page in avast where my old registration is shown with the mark that it will end in 10 days.

Did I miss something?

Regards,

Christian.

Isn't there a "Register Now" button? (on the registration page).
Also, on the Current status page, isn't there a banner that says that your registration will expire in 10 days and a Register Now button?

Thanks

I meant as a mirror, not as one server that can handle the full load.  I thought that would have been obvious.  Every mirror helps.  But never mind...

Upgraded over the top from v5.0.462 to v5.0.507 on two computers.
It really worked well.
Now to see if this new release fixes the manual updating issue I have been experiencing.
Thank you for the great program.   :)

Server error # 301, does this mean that the servers are overloaded? ???

Got it, sorry for that. We want to keep all the infrastructure under our control though...

Well we recently started using LimeLight as well, but most of the updates are still coming from our own servers.

Another thing is downloads - most of these (in the English-speaking countries) are routed via download.com

Thanks
Vlk
