Avast scans your emails being sent or received, during that period, there is no activity between the computer and the email server/internet, so there is a timeout warning, that's it.

What would be more helpful would be the exact timeout message or a screenshot of it so we can identify if the timeout is legitimate?

What is your email program?
What were you doing when you received the error, senting/receiving email, just browsing, etc?
Do you use Azeurus or any other P2P program, if so what one?

When I get the message , I am usually browsing, or sometimes my computer can be just  on , with the DSL on , and I will be away from my computer and it will come up anyway.  I don't do much emailing at all.

 An Example:           Avast!: Connection Timeout
                                Internet Connection timeout elapsed .
Continue waiting ?  yes or no
                               (dllsys64.exe.>mta.v25.level3.mail.yahoo.com:25)

I usually click no when this comes up, I don't use and program like Azeurus or P2P.
the email program used is Outlook Express, and Yahoo.    By the way, since I have been trying to type this to you , at least 15 have popped up.   Thanks for your help.

It certainly looks like you have malware running on your system - http://www.greatis.com/appdata/d/d/dllsys64.exe.htm which is trying to get out. A god firewall should have been able to detect this trying to get a connection.
So do you have a firewall, if so what? a temp measure whislt you deal with this would be to deny internet access to this file.

Download and run this program/s Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/) If using winXP. or a-Squared free (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/) if using win98/ME.

If you haven't already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it.
1. Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download)
2. Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download)
3. Spywareblaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) Don't install this until you are clean.

In this instance the cause of the timeout is extreamly likely to be malware.

So killing the timeout warning would allow the malware access if it didn't get tripped up by the Mail Scanner not being able to scan the content because it is expecting to be scanning email traffic protocol. Because of that there was no activity for a period of time hence the timeout warning.

Never treat the symptom treat the disease, the cause of the timeout.

Yes, you can disable the timeout warning in avast.

However, before telling you how to do so I must ask the question (also posed by DavidR) why do you want to silence the symptom of the problem rather than the problem itself?

This is rather like installing a burglar alarm and when it goes off you want to turn off the burglar alarm rather than apprehend the burglar.  If you take this approach you might as well uninstall your antivirus protection rather than have it alert you to a problem.

Perhaps you might like to post to us the exact message from avast so that we might try to help you.

the problem must of been something to do with my comp .
i tried running avast scanner ,the malware scanner and anti spyware scan non of these got rid of the timeout popups so i resorted to a system restore which seems to have sorted the problem out everything is fine now. :D cheers alan

It would appear to be, so you situation doesn't appear to be the same, had you given us a detailed example of the timeout warning (as srj did) or posted a screenshot of it, we could have helped more, or at least been able to idintify the timeouts were occuring.

A belated welcome to the forums.

Leviathan ... I hope you mis-typed 4.06 as that is a now old version. You should have 4.6 as the latest version.    :)
