Boot Scan does nothing upon reboot
« on: August 30, 2009, 06:38:39 PM »
I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. I've read that it does not work for the 64-bit version.

But the option is not greyed out here, and when I try to select it again, it says it is already scheduled.

But after I reboot, it does not run and boots windows like normal.

I also have the red flag in the tray icon for the On-Access Scanner, and have searched for any remnants of anti-virus stuff, and all I could find were spyware things like, adAware, windows defender, etc.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated to get this boot scan to run, as well as solve the infamous "RPC" error for the On-Access Scanner. (I have all of the Windows Updates installed, etc.)

Strange... Although I never used a x64 system, I thought it should be greyed out.

as well as solve the infamous "RPC" error for the On-Access Scanner. (I have all of the Windows Updates installed, etc.)
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?
Do you use a firewall? Which one?

Also, take a look into Administrative Tools > Services
and see how the four avast services are set to start (automatically or manual).

I'm using x32 currently. I was just saying that I've ready it was greyed out on x64 systems, but this is not my case, I've installed the Ultimate vista 32bit version.

I tried to repair first, then I tried to uninstall, boot, install, boot again. And the boot scanner does not scan as well as the RPC error in the tray icon still.

I have had antivirus installed in the past, but I do not remember what it was. I have searched with HiJackThis, all I've seen was the build in Vista Windows Defender.

The only firewall in use is the built in Windows one as well.

The first two show Automatic, the second two show manual for mail scanner and web scanner.

I try to start the first two that are setup for automatic, and the errors I get are:

Antivirus:
Windows could not start the avast! Antivirus service on Local Computer.
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

iAVS4 Control Service:
Windows could not start the avast! iAVS4 Control Service on Local Computer.
Error 5: Access is denied.

so, take a look into Administrative Tools > Services

This is ok. You don't need to change it.
What about my other questions (other antivirus, etc.)?
