Avast! has detected a secure connection

Hi Forum,

I have seen this issue noted twice in this forum, but I cannot understand the solution.  I recently upgraded Microsoft Office to 2010.  This includes Outlook.  It seems to be working OK, but this morning when I booted up the computer and started Outlook I got the following message:

Avast! has detected a secure connection from your mail program (process OUTLOOK.EXE) to the POP server 68.142.229.14 (68.142.229.14).

This type of connection cannot be checked for viruses.  Please disable SSL/TLS in your mail client so that the Mail Scanner can scan your mail. The mail scanner will provide the SSL/TLS security itself.


I am NOT trying to use a secure connection and Microsoft reports that this is not possible for a POP server (they want you to use Exchange Server).  However, something in my setup options in Outlook is turning something on to suggest to Avast! Internet Security 5.0 that Outlook is trying to use SSL.

Where do I look in either Outlook and/or Avast! to correct this situation?

I don't use Outlook so I don't have an answer for you however, I'd recommend
that you remove your email address from your last post unless you enjoy a lot of spam.

Hi Bob,

That would have been great advise if we could turn the clock back to 1988, but my e.mail address has been out there for over 20 years  ::).  If my spam blockers don't do the trick, I have a very large "bit bucket" next to my computer's desktop.

I had hoped that someone from Avast! would tune in and help me with this secure connection issue.

It's still good advice since leaving your email address exposed to be harvested by the bots only increases the amount of spam.
For your problem, you should disable ssl/tls in your mail client (advanced settings), as avast secures the connection.

Hi Bob,

I wish some of the good people at Avast! would chime in here.  I know you don't use Outlook.  I have looked all through the Outlook settings and I can find nothing to set ssl/tsl.  Note that Microsoft tells me this is just an option if you are using Exchange Server.

BTW, the message did NOT appear today.  This may be just one of those "funny" things that crop up every now and then.  I have been in the industry since 1963 and nothing surprises me any more  :).

Hello. I am going to continue this thread if possible.  I am using the gmail server in Outlook 2007. My question relates to this however if I disable the SSL/TLS gmail does not seem to work when configuring gmail. I do get the same message of "Avast! has detected a secure connection from your mail program. This type of connection cannot be checked for viruses. Please disable SSl?TLS in your mail client.....". Anyone have a similar problem?
