Title: Annoying pop-ups won't go away
Post by: shakie_anoni on August 01, 2006, 03:19:34 PM
Hi, I thaught I would never had to come back here again, but my computer isn't working good.Every minute a pop-up shows up.

Is there any free virus scanner that you think will help me?
The only one that worked was NOD32, but that was just a trial, don't have it anymore =(.
I'm using Avast and Hitpro  now.

I can't find any file on my computer that may be the problem of the pop-ups. Only thing that I see is that I suddenly have the game "Snowball Wars" on my computer when I restart =S.

I really hope somebody could help me.

What are these pop-ups ?
What browser are you using ?
Firefox has a pop-up blocker incorporate into it, but you may well be suffering from adware or spyware infection. There are other browsers that have pop-up blockers.

Did you try a google search for Snowball Wars ?
This is just one of the hits returned http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/pest.aspx?id=453098038

Adware :  Software that displays pop-up/pop-under advertisements when the primary user interface is not visible, or which do not appear to be associated with the product.

If you haven't already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode.
1. Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download)
2. Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download)
3. Spywareblaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) Don't install this until you are clean.

Hi,

The pops ups are mostly advertisement.
For example sites like:
a-d-w-a-r-e.com, errorsafe.com, newsalone.com, locatebest.com...

I have WinXP and use Firefox.

I allready have
Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroyand Spywareblaster , it comes with HitPro.

Somebody told me to download HiJackThis and let an expert look at the log. Should I post the log here?

I suggest?

1) Disable System Restore on Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5BLN%5D;310405
2) Clean your temporary files.
3) Schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot.
4) Use a-squared (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/), ewido (http://www.ewido.net/en/) or Spyware Terminator (http://www.spywareterminator.com/) (trojan removers).
5) Use HijackThis and see if you`re clean.
