Title: Rescue disk
Post by: Cheetor on September 01, 2005, 06:17:54 AM
Many antivirus programs create Rescue disks in case files from windows are missing and you can't reboot the computer. Does avast! antivirus create a rescue disk?

In short, no.

Most people have Windows XP formatted with the NTFS file system. Rescue boot disks are formatted with the FAT file system which is unable to access NTFS partitions.

But avast! does have a boot time scan which can be considered as a replacement of sorts for rescue disks.

This is not an option for free.
avast! only realeases Bart CD (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_bart_cd.html).
Which operational system do you have? If you have XP, xistenz's suggestion is a very good alternative  8)

How do I invoke the Boot Time Scan when the computer won't start at all?  Can I create a disk from another,  working computer to do this?

Unfortunatelly, you can't...
For rescue disks, you should try to install AVG in the good computer and make the 6 or 8 floppies from there...  ::)
What is the error on booting the other computer? Isn't a driver or hardware problem?

As Tech mentions what is the error, if we can get you past that perhaps you will be OK.

Why were you considering running a boot-time scan ?
What were the circumstances leading up to being unable to start the computer ?
Have you tried booting into safe mode which may get you into the computer ?

Lets not forget that AVG rescue disk doesnt work over ntfs partitions (read some XP instalations, Nt, 2000 and 2003)...  :-\

You could try BartPe if your macihne doesn't boot. did you try safe mode ?
You could also make your own Avast flash drive ,that what I did once.
