Total Protection malware
« on: August 23, 2009, 11:45:54 AM »
Hi,

My computer (winXP, sp3, latest fixes) has been infected with some software which calls itself "Total Protection", which tries to extort money out of me for some bogus software to remove viruses. I already paid for Avast, but it is not detecting or removing this particular malware. The software runs as 10931874.exe but this file does not seem to exist anywhere on the computer. I have run reboot-and-scan several times and each time it has picked up a single file or so with various viruses (win32:fraudo, js:downloader-cc, bravia.exe rootkit). I have had the machine disconnected from the Internet so there is no way new viruses can get in.

Please can anyone advise on the correct way to remove this annoying malware? I searched for "Total Protection malware" but all I seem to get is loads of similar people trying to sell me their malware removal tool.

thanks in advance

Smotsie

Try boot-time scan with avast...
Download MBAM and try to scan with it...
