Title: Avast not scanning my email
Post by: elfpattaya on January 23, 2010, 11:09:17 AM
Avast is not scanning my e-mail. I use hotmail and have set it up as POP3 port 110 security SSl. Any ideas as to why it's not working.

If avast! 5, you need to turn off SSL in your email client so that avast! will do SSL instead.

avast! 4.8 will not scan SSL Hotmail, Yahoo, GMail, etc.

Any idea how to turn off SSL on hotmail

just go to your account settings in the client that you use and turn it off there. One more thing, 110 is not an ssl port so you should have set 995 instead. But now that you want to use avast mail scanner, leave that to 110, and again, turn off ssl.

I still can't find where to turn off SSl on Hotmail. No worries I shall carry on as before and let Hotmail take care of my e-mail. Thanks for your help.

Is this actually a Hotmail POP3 account or are you using windows live mail etc to download email from the webmail site ?

I use Hotmail, but I also have Windows Live Mail, synced to my Hotmail account.

so if you use hotmail through Windows Live Mail with default account settings it's not POP but DeltaSync, and there's no ssl (as deltasync uses http/80) and no way avast can scan that. Protocol is MS proprietary and there's no way to interfere.

Yes, that is the problem as Logos mentions DeltaSync is being used and this is a Microsoft proprietary function that only certain MS email clients are allowed to use. So it physically can't be scanned by the Mail Shield.

If you actually had a Hotmail POP3 account (I believe it is possible to get them now) then it would be using the standard POP3 protocol to download your email and avast 5 would be able to scan that.

O.K Thanks for explaining everything. I will just carry on as before, never had a problem anyway.

I also use gmail and they require an SSL connection. I am not even sure I would be able to receive email if I disabled SSL.
Also what is the impact if I could disable it?
