Temporarily disable avast

As a newbie, I want to install a new program, however it says to turn off all programs including anti virus before installing.
Apparently I'm old & dumb, because I can't figure out how to do this, can someone Help

Don't disable your AV, it is at precisely this time that you want your AV running.

I have to question what a program is doing that it suggests you disable your AV, what has it to hide, is it doing something the AV wouldn't like, etc. etc.

So what is this program that wants you to do this ?

Better still does it say why ?

doesn't say why ? But Omni page 15 by ScanSoft says to close all other applications, especially anti-virus programs

I've used avast for over 4 years and have never turned of avast.
If you can't install a program with your security actived, then the program probably
isn't worth installing.

What muddle headed (1980s) thinking on their part.

For what OmniPage is this is absolutely crazy and there is no way I would comply with this request, certainly without 'specific' reasons why.

Like Bob if that is an absolute requirement (and can't be installed otherwise) then there would be absolutely no way it would get installed on my system.

I would say the only exception might be for installing other non-antivirus security applications and I can't recall even doing that for other security applications.
