Title: Would you like to join the avast! translation team?
Post by: robinson on April 28, 2010, 02:13:40 PM
Hello,

We are often contacted by users of our free products, asking if there is some way they can make a contribution to re-pay avast for their free protection. The most obvious thing they can do is upgrade to one of the paid products, as it is the revenue from these products that allows us to continue to develop and improve avast! and to continue to provide it free of charge to so many users around the world.

However there is another option, which is to join the growing ranks of the avast! volunteer translation team. Thanks to the great efforts of our volunteers, the avast! program is already translated into 40  languages.

Cooperating with our user community makes sense, as our users are the people that know avast! best. So whether you are a user of one of our free products or a paid product, if you have a good level of English and you have the time and would be willing to provide avast! with translation support, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

My apologies if I do not reply to everybody, but if you have registered an interest in participating I will be in touch directly by email if and when we need additional support for any specific languages. Thank you very much in advance; all offers to help with the ongoing localization of avast are greatly appreciated.

I can help with English to French too.
Currently, there are a lot of typos/grammar mistakes, and a few sentences that don't mean anything in the French help.
There also are a few mistakes in avast!'s French GUI.

I would like to help with the Spanish translation, I think that if we have Avast things translated into Spanish, we will have more ways to guide people with problems with Avast in our language.

Don't you think LightArchangel? I guess more people are installing Avast, since we're helping them to solve their problems in Spanish.

Thanks to all for your offers of help. It's good to know you're there and ready to lend a hand if needed. It's not likely that we will be sending any regular translations your way, but from time to time we might need the occasional text translated, so I will contact you directly then.

Thanks again for responding.

Veja o nosso post recente do blogue http://blog.avast.com/2010/04/16/new-avast-update-adds-7-more-language-packs/ # more-978.

Melhores cumprimentos.

Marcus Taveira

Thank you for offering to help with Bangla. In fact the translation was started some time ago by another volunteer but we have not heard from him for some time. If we do not hear back from him in another week or so, we may need to start over again so we may contact you and ask if you are still interested in helping with this. Thank you again.

Translation bug in German translation:

while registering avast Free you can choose "Herr", "Frau" and "Fräulein" as title.
This is also possible in http://www.avast.com/de-de/registration-free-antivirus.php

The phrase "Fräulein" is outdated (it was used in the 70s).

Your point is no doubt valid, but there is no compulsion to select "Fraulein". We could of course replace it and have just "Herr" and "Frau" but this offers less flexibility for any "old-school" users who might prefer Fraulein. I am quite sure that if we removed it, we would get a complaint from someone objecting that we are forcing them to use Frau! So unless it is causing any really serious offence to German users, we'll probably leave the choice there for now.

I think it is more for the languages that haven't yet been translated as mentioned in the first post of this topic, which gives this info and link.

<snip>
However there is another option, which is to join the growing ranks of the avast! volunteer translation team. Thanks to the great efforts of our volunteers, the avast! program is already translated into 27 languages, and we will be adding to this number over the coming months. See our recent blog post http://blog.avast.com/2010/04/16/new-avast-update-adds-7-more-language-packs/#more-978.

But we also need support to help us translate other materials for publication in various countries, but in particular, translations into Spanish and Italian. A single document is usually not more than 300 - 400 words and we would need support for no more than one or two documents per week.

When it's done, it's done - don't worry about it.
Yes, you have time (though I'll have something with higher priority for you soon), but I believe it doesn't have to be in the initial release anyway - I'd say there will certainly be program updates soon after the initial release where it could be included, if necessary.

I can translate the whole thing (help files too) from English or Russian to Latvian. Just give me the files that should be translated. And, please, give me basic instructions in program translating - I have no past experience in program translation, only good knowledge of languages and advanced computer user experience (although I don't know anything about programming).

Thanks to the great efforts of our volunteers, the avast! program is already translated into 27 languages, and we will be adding to this number over the coming months.

Cooperating with our user community makes sense, as our users are the people that best know avast! and are best equipped to provide translations consistent with the program and the avast! website, for the benefit of all avast! users in their respective countries. So whether you are a user of one of our free products or a paid product, if you have a good level of English and you have the time and would be willing to provide avast! with translation support in Spanish or Italian, or any other language, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

Thank you.

Any particular feature you are missing?
I plan to update the program, but it will require some work and it's not that we'd really need it right now (besides, there are some things I definitely don't like, e.g. the dependency on .NET Framework 4.0 - and the program crashing if you only have the "client profile" of .NET Framwork installed), so I simply didn't do it yet.

No, not really. Just following the stream of updates...
I'll need to reinstall version 2009 then... Not very difficult.
I have .NET 4 so I did not see any problem but, indeed, could be another pain for other users.

The language list in google are Hindi,Bengali,Marathi,Tamil,Telugu, gujarathi, kannada, malayalam & punjabi.Since india's big country,it'll be helpful. I can help translate in Tamil,as i'm fluent in both Tamil & English. If you wanna translate to tamil,Contact me at my mail. :P

Thanks to all for your offers of help. It's good to know you're there and ready to lend a hand if needed. It's not likely that we will be sending any regular translations your way, but from time to time we might need the occasional text translated, so I will contact you directly then.

Thanks again for responding.

PMFJI, but if you wish to have an excellent translation into different languages, setting up a forum where proposed translations can be posted and then tested by native speakers is a better way to go than just relying upon internal help. Just my two cents worth.

Well there aren't actually any delays as such. The thread you referred to is in relation to the Support FAQs, for which there isn't any specific timeline as far as I'm aware. If you would like to help with translatingn the FAQs, please contact Kocour who manages our technical support team.I'm sure he would be glad of any additional support :)
With regard to the German homepage, I can only assume you are referring to the "Business", "Support" and "Community" tabs which are intentionally not translated as they are commonly used terms. Also "Community" is part of our brand recognition, (avast! Community) so should be in English rather than translated into something like "Gemeinschaft".

No, I was not refering to the tabs, no problem with them. ;)
Problem is also related to the Faqs, as there are only English links in the German Support section of the avast! homepage right now...

Hi Tech!
I just saw your post and my eye stopped at 'Übertechnical'! Why don't you change to 'Hipertechnical'? That's better I guess.
Best regards

@robinson

Hi robinson!
Yesterday I saw a post of 'Tech'. My eyes stopped for his status is 'Übertechnical'! That's a word-construction of german and english.
As you are a member of 'avast team' I ask you and the team to change that status into 'Hipertechnical'. It sounds much better I guess. ;)
Best regards
HDW38

It makes just as little sense, the 'Über' is also bound to other avast forum rankings and really nothing to be bothered about.

I'm not sure if whether you're still searching for volunteers or not, but I do somewhat keep my English qualities in the higher bar, and I'd be glad if you chose me to be the Hebrew - translator, as there's currently none. I've joined this forum just two hours ago, and I've been receiving such a great support over the issue that occurred on my computer. Now that it was solved, thanks to the support I got, I feel like I owe something back to the team of Avast! I know there's no Hebrew section, and the population of Jewish / Hebrew speakers is low, but fifteen million people (Jews around the world) are worth opening an Hebrew section. Thank you for this opportunity!

Being up-to-date is a key feature for specialized software in security field. How old is this page: http://www.avast.com/en-us/translators

Translating for Avast! is an honor in itself, but does Avast! ever think of updating its list of translators on the "Avast! Speaks Your Language" page every now and then to include the forgotten ones who enjoyed this volunteered contribution?

I do not now who done croatian translation but I think it's poor. Should be better and can be better! Some expressions are still on english, terms like 'Mail zaštita' should be replaced with 'Zaštita elektroničke pošte' because 'Mail' is english word, not croatian, furthermore the english expression 'Web protection' is translated as 'Web zaštita' thing is there is no such letter in croatian as 'W'. And one time is written like 'Web Zaštita' and next time it says 'Zaštita skripti'. Do it all caps or normal letters, don't mix it.

For croatian people:
Ekipa, kakve su to gluposti, dajte prevedite to kako bog zapovijeda!   ;) Nemojte se ljutiti, sretan sam što postoji prijevod i na hrvatski i znam da to nije lako za napraviti, ali eto, opaskom sam htio više pomoći nego kritizirati.  :D

Hello Sadegh,
Don't worry, we haven't forgotten you :) This page will be updated very soon to include Persian. Your contribution is indeed greatly valued, it is regrettable, that due to the current political situation, we're not currently able to maintain the Persian translation going forward, but hopefully this is only a temporary situation. Many thanks again.

I would have to agree that users shouldn't download unknown pdf files (which can be exploited) from unknown sources, especially when this is for a security product.

It should be offered to avast directly if they haven't got one and agree it is worthy they could then offer it in line with their other documentation.

Unfortunately ASako undestood me wrong. I asked him to post here to offer his services as translator, and to explain that he has a guide for Avast! mobile in Spanish that is indeed much needed for the Spanish speaking community. My fault.

The AMS Guide is currently being translated into Spanish but is taking longer than planned, so apologies for that. The feedback that I've had is that the offered translation appears to be heavily influenced by Google and as such, I'm afraid we wouldn't be able to publish that as an official avast guide. However, I hope that the official version will be available in the near future.

Thank you for your patience.

Yes, I want to help the Dutch custommers! A specially the older people who can't read Englisch. Hallo ik ben Fleur en heb nu voor 2 jaar Avast. Inderdaad het is lastig als je gebrekkig Engels kent. Verder ervaar ik Avast als een prettige internet beveiliger. Ik bezoek zo af en toe het forum en moet dus goed lezen wat het team voor oplossingen bied in het Engels! ;) :-[

Hello, I have been using free avast for some time and I would like to give it a try and help with translation in Greek language  if needed...

Question... of all the people above volunteering, has anyone actually managed to get on board and/or get a new language onto Avast? I have been trying for months now and I'm still no further with our locale....

You could put it on the main forum Avast Free/Pro/Suite (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0) or the General Topics (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=1.0) forum. Though I feel the first one is more appropriate.

So is there ANYBODY who has ever managed to get a locale onto Avast? I have been trying since March (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=148325.msg1124976#msg1124976) to get our locale on and all I'm getting is friendly messages but nothing ever seems to happen. Are there actually any l10n admins around? Or is it a bit like GoogleInYourLanguageUntilGoogleIsBigEnoughThenGoAway?

Maybe if you had been around long enough, you would know that the answer is yes. If your services and language are needed, you'll be contacted.
I'm sure that doesn't mean that Avast isn't grateful for your offer to help in translating. :)

I speak English almost fluently, and I do know quite a few advanced terms in relation to computers.

Well, it's only been a year for me, true...

So basically they cherry pick those locales they think will be 'useful' i.e. only big ones and never mind the rest? I certainly hope that's not the case, that flies in the face of the whole idea of open source...

And I'm pretty sure they don't have anyone else working on Gaelic, certainly not using SDL Passolo...

That's up to Avast. Posting it here doesn't really seem to make any difference either.
I haven't seen a reply from Avast in this thread for ages.  :(

Avast is using dedicated/professional translators for major languages. I'm pretty an execption.
Some of the non populated languages (few ones) are being translated by users.
I've already pointed that this should be clear here in the OP.
For any reason, that I don't know, they think it's not the case.

There are two mistakes in Croatian translation.
"Scan" should be "Skeniranje" & "Virus chest" should be "Karantena".
