Title: Unable to disable avast sandbox
Post by: Azzatorr on June 04, 2012, 07:52:03 PM
Hey there fella's,

I've run into my first severe problems with Avast today that got me really frustrated.

I purchased Limbo on Steam, and am trying to run the game. First time I ran it, Avast picked it up because "static analysis finds the file suspicious". So, I added it to the list of files that will automatically be excluded from automatic sandboxing. Ran limbo again: it got sandboxed! So, I go to avast settings, set AutoSandbox mode to "ask" and run Limbo again. And yet again, avast automatically sandboxes it without asking me first.
So hey, why not bring out the big tools? I went to the "exclusions" in the file system shield settings and completely added C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\* to the list. Run Limbo once more: auto sandboxed, without asking me. Getting pissed of, I decided to just turn AutoSandbox off completely. Run Limbo, you know it, autosandboxed.
Even bigger tools?! Completely turn of ALL system shields Avast was running. Run Limbo.... AUTOSANDBOXED.

I tried restarting the pc after applying all those changed settings to avast, but even with autosandbox turned off, to "ask", adding limbo to the exclusion list, nothing works. I even tried manually scanning limbo.exe with avast, and as expected, it gives clean results, but whatever I do, it keeps blocking the exe from running and straight away stuffs it in the sandbox.

I'm THIS close to uninstalling an antivirus software I've been happily using and recommending to friends for over a year now, all because of a system I can NOT disable or get to work properly for that matter.

Any advice / thoughts?

A bit of additional information if it helps:

Avast FREE
Virus definitions version: 120604-0
Program version: 7.0.1426

System: Win7 64bit

the game being blocked: http://limbogame.org/

I've tried several reboots and reinstalled the game to see if that helped to no avail.

I've seen the same thing.  It gets stuck analyzing a program and will not stop.  I put it in the exclusions and reboot and it starts analyzing again.  My biggest problem is with C:\Program Files (x86)\PA Server Monitor\PALowPriorityHelper.exe

there is a problem with ur avast install.  a proper install will not autosandbox a program when file system shield/ autosandb.ox is turned off.

try a repair via avast uninstaller 1st. (go to 'add/remove programs' - for windows xp or 'programs and features' - for windows 7/vista ---> select Avast! uninstaller ---> select repair)
reboot ur system.

if the above does not work, follow the steps below.

1. Download a fresh Avast! 7 package from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download (to reduce chance of corrupted install)
2. uninstalling Avast! the normal way with windows
3. run Avast! uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (please do it in SAFE MODE!   )
4. run the uninstall utility for Avast! 7
5. reboot and go into safe mode once more, second time for Avast! 6 (this is IF u have updated to Avast! 7 from Avast! 6)
6. reboot again, this time to normal windows mode
7. install the fresh package

after which, redo all exclusions u have done for steam games, namely exclusions for both autosandbox and file system shield.

Try "repair". Control Panel>Programs and Features/Uninstall>double click avast>scroll to "repair">reboot.  :)
