avast home will not install on Windows Server 2003
« on: May 03, 2009, 09:13:30 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am a student and I just received a license for Windows 2003 Server from my faculty due to a AI project that will be hosted on my machine.

I am a faithful user of AVAST antivirus (home edition) and unfortunately it refuses to install on my machine... You can see the install log below.

Please tell me there is a possibility of installing AVAST home on my machine. It`s the 2nd time i get instantly infected with F###### conficker.

Thank you!

as far as i know it will not install. it is not because you made something wrong but because that type of OS has another AVAST type of software . AVAST for server and it is not free

I confirm that it won't work on a server OS as it isn't supported in the Home or Pro version as they are client/stand alone versions.

So it is not so much that "Your operating system does not meet the minimum requirements. You can install avast! only on Windows NT4 with Service Pack 4 or higher." it doesn't meet the minimum standard, but that "It cannot be installed on NT Server." which includes Windows 2003 Server.

Whilst the Server version of avast is expensive, there is a Windows Home Server option that is cheaper, but I don't know if that supports Windows 2003 Server, but only the "Windows Home Server OS"
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

i feel sorry for avast.

i mean it`s still my home pc, i am not in a company or anything like that.

i just installed windows 2003 server in order to lead freaky school project.... should never have done that.....

i even tried to change the registry key avast is reading during setup: path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions key ProductType but windows won`t allow me, instant error regarding license violation (tampering with product type)... 5cr3w that!

avast really 5uck5 at this. will never buy the pro version from them and if noone from avast bothered to answer i`ll migrate to nod32 (reinstall whole system @ 30 days using ghost from hiren and reinstall nod :D); nod would have been my first choice but as it needs reinstalling of the entire system and as there was free avast... went to avast which proved so far to be pretty nice. (please note the past tense)

by-by avast!

it`s not that i am mean or that i want to revenge on avast, i have no reasons for that; i`ve been using avast for like 1 year and half and i`ve been promoting it as well (installing it all over to my friends, advising them to register etc; more than 40 installation in the past 3 months)... but i mean when you get a better os for free from your university and the antivirus you love refuses to work... damn, it`s almost like your girlfriend cheated on you.

avast! 4.8 (Home & Professional) won't install on Windows Server OS because, like almost all AVs for Windows PCs, it's just not designed to work properly on a multi-user system.

This post has a link to a Free version of Spyware Doctor with AV which, according to the poster, works on Server 2003 (but I haven't been game to try it myself).

Well, that's not really true (that it can't work in a multi-user system)... it's more like an artifical check to prevent server users from using a free version in corporate environment where Server Edition is required.
Anyway, that's how it is I'm afraid - avast! Home/Pro cannot be installed on a server OS, and there's nothing that can be done about it; it's hardcoded into the program.
