Title: Announcement: avast! Mobile Beta Test
Post by: reinhardholzner on July 30, 2013, 02:41:10 PM
Ladies and gentlemen,

It is time! Our new version 3 releases of avast! Mobile Security, avast! Anti-Theft and our initial version 1 release of the new product avast! Backup go out of our top-secret high security labs and take peek into the world.

But we'll not give it to millions of people without having a few early-adopters look at what we did and tell us it's OK to go so we hereby announce our avast! Mobile Beta test. The Beta test just started and will run for a full week. It will hopefully give us valuable feedback that we can incorporate into our product before going public officially.

Note that this release also incorporates a premium line on top of our free offering. DON'T PANIC - Rest assured, everything that WAS free WILL STAY FREE!. Everything that is premium, is NEW features!

Here is what comes up:

avast! Mobile Security

avast! Anti-Theft

avast! Mobile Backup

How to join the Beta test

We are looking forward to your feedback and are really happy to have you as our testers!
With best regards

the avast! Mobile Development team

Downloaded and Installed from the Google Play Store, so far my only issue is that Avast Anti-Theft 3.0 BETA will NOT install in ROOT Mode.

As stated above for Advanced Anti Theft Beta send me your IMEI to holzner@avast.com

I've just entered the public beta, and successfully downloaded all three components. Both AV and anti-theft installed without an issue, with root privileges. I can not, however, get backup to initialize. When asked to 'set up Google Drive' I tap that button, select my account and tap OK after which a permissions box pops titled 'Sign in to avast!Backup with Google. I tap OK and, after about three seconds of 'connecting', it comes back to the previous permissions screen. All I can do is back out and cancel, it will not proceed beyond this point.

I have an original Droid Razr with the stock android install and root. I have two factor aith enabled on my google account and this is a google apps account.

OK, I think I will just stick with the standard install then as I already have it installed and am eager to start trying it out without having to send my IMEI through the Public E-mail System.

Welcome aboard (I notice its your first post here)! I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 (yes I just bought it a couple of months ago) which has stock recovery, stock firmware (Android 4.2.2) and is Rooted. I used C.F. Auto Root.

I’m not being able to pass the get beta test button… AMS is crashing and returning to PIN and then the first page (free x premium).

It passed alone to the beta... I don't know what happened but I suspect it was the update in the Google Play servers.

Likewise I can't enter the code that is being asked for because of the above fault.

It force closes for everything! I can't use the program at all. All attempts to open avast beta ends in shutdown. Odd. It's not running on my phone at all.

That's weird, I am NOT yet having any problems with it crashing. Are you guys trying to use a NON-Google id?

I should note that I used my gmail.com domain e-mail address and it worked just fine.

I don't see any bigger number of crashes on my side. If you updated, maybe try to reinstall the whole thing from scratch?

First thank you for the public beta test.

I want to report a bug and some suggestion.

1. Bug: in the avast Backup when I tap to button to run backup it's failed and get an error message: a general backup error occurred (reason unknown). I set everything ok, and the wifi is on.

2. in the avast Security: the green premium button too big so the 'm' is started a new line and its ugly.

3. a log feature will be great in Backup then in Security

4. in Backup: please add  notification icon (grayscale) settings because i like this skin

I cant use the Backup App on my rooted I9505.

It trys to connect to gDrive, the permission window opens, i click confirm. Then it trys again to connect and the window comes up again.

What is here wrong?

Edit: on my Note2 with Cyanogenmod it seems to work well.... confusing....

Maybe its related to 2-factor-auth. I'll check.

I'll check the reason unknown error. Will probably be only fixed on next release. Does it occur every time?

Some suggestions:

Backup:
Backup Items->Images,Audio Files,Videos -> Make it possbile to select hole folders for backing up. Selecting each file is very annoying

I am a beta tester of avast mobile security(beta). Till now 2 bug I've found.
1) avast anti-theft > Password Check > Take Photo didn't work. I already have avast account and also enabled 6 digit pin protection. After installation of anti-theft i enabled Password Check > Take Photo option and then i closed avast and reopened avast and put wrong password several time. But it didn't took any photo of mine.
2) Power Hunger.

There is a separate dialog with some text that you need to read and click OK before enabling that options :-) it says: "Please note that password check in order to work needs you to set up your Android lock screen with a password or a gesture pattern." -> it is about Android LOCK SCREEN!

We've just released a bugfix update build 5564. This update contains several bugfixes for crashes at app launch and other bugs. Please update as soon as possible (it might take some time until the update is visible in Google Play). Note that we plan to release beta update of my.avast.com today which will also contain features like "Take Picture" and others. Regards Reinhard

That's because you need to send an E-mail with your IMEI Attached to holzner@Avast.com.

I forgot to mention that you also need to install Anti-Theft from within AMS 3.0 Beta rather than from the Google Play Store.

Feedback/issues:
1. avast! backup icon while running. Is it there?
2. Unknown button on avast! backup: restoring of your subscription failed. Please try again in few minutes. And yes, I use 2-factor-authentication.
3. If you already enter the PIN, why when you open backup or anti-theft you need to enter it again.
4. The lag (huge delay) while entering the PIN. This was always there: you click the numbers and avast! fail to retrieve them... Everything is slow.
5. Add an option to keep the screen on while backing up or, at least, add a good notification icon (with progress).
6. Congratulations for the improvements on the avast! notification icon/info. At least, I didn't noticed it was very good informative.

Tech, I am NOT noticing any Lag Time while entering my Pin, it is true that I most likely have a newer Android Operating System Version than most of the people here (I own a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4) with Stock MF9 Firmware (Android 4.2.2). I am Rooted however.

Hi,

currently there seems to be an issue on Google side with the beta program. We are trying to solve this as we speak, but as you can imagine, it might take some time.

patrice58, so now it downloads 2.0.xxxx version for you and still doesn't work? Or it does now? Did you try to do a clean install of AMS instead of updating to beta from current public version? What's weird is there are no intensive error reports on our servers or on Google Play so I don't really see what might be wrong with your installation :(

Hello,
I am now testing all of three apps and have problems and suggestions that follow:

AMS:

- App locking feature isn't working. I set my own password (using avast PIN) and try locking recommended to lock apps (Google Play, Settings) and even some other apps but it doesn't show the locking password.
- Uninstall protection hasn't been working. I have contacted with Filip before and waiting for his solution. :(
- The main interface seems difficult to see other features (which is available when slide to the right) and may make users wonder whether these features are still available. So I suggest adding a direct "user guide" in the first time of use about the "slide bar".

Backup:

- I had a problem related to signing in to Google Account (after tapped on "OK" in the permission dialog, it said "Connecting..." then returned to the permission dialog again). This problem is fixed now.
- I don't know if there is a "refresh" in case the back up process interrupted (maybe due to connection problem). If not, I suggest adding it.

Hi, what device is it? I see that is is rooted and probably AOKP ROm; there are some permissions issues with starting the Mobile Security. Do you have Google (GAPPS) installed on the device?
Nexus 4 with Paranoid Android 22/07/2013 (AOSP) and PA Gapps 19/07/2013 (android 4.2.2)

Avast! worked fine before I updated to the beta!

Also, out of interest, are we going to loose any features we have now or is it new features are premium?

Hi please note that you are part of a Beta program. There can be lots of issues on different devices we do not know yet. You can at any time sign out of the beta and revert to the current public version.

But, if you want to help us finding your issue, you should tell me more details to holzner@avast.com. Like phone model, Android version, installed avast! Apps.

Still crashing at the point of me pressing go premium. Which is not impressing me to be honest. Every other way of trying to enter avast ends with a crash. Great!

Regarding GDrive problems:

OK the client has been released as well (5575/5576) please try using it once it is published on Google Play. The change on client is as follows: first it will try the old way (that failed for you guys). If it fails, it will give you a dialog with an error code (i NEED to know that error code, even if you proceed!) and an option to use the "Web method" to authenticate. This is an alternate method of authenticating we implemented as fallback but did never use - lets see if it helps.

reason is that file shield consumes more power on device so we concentrate on good out of the box experience and leave this to the user to decide.

I have a Nexus 4 with android 4.3 all stock and no root. Since I update to android 4.3 I cannot track my phone from the web-portal. I get "Command timed out" all the time. This happens both with Anti-Theft 2.0 and the new 3.0 beta (which I just installed). With 3.0 I also get communications failure when I check for "Fix connection problems" under my vast account on my phone. It worked with android 4.2.2.

Thanks, Fillip, I think what Patrice58 is saying though is he is still able to download AMS 3.0 from the Google Play Store but then it crashes when he tries to launch the program and select free options only. By the way it looks like 2.0 was updated yesterday, and that may have been what caused the problem with the Google Play Store.

Yep free and premium as I can't even get to the entry screen before it crashes. I lied EVERYTHING I do causes avast to crash. Trying to get it to work by tapping the icon crash. Trying by pulling down the status box crash. It says it is protecting me but if I can't access it to check I  am not trusting it.

As a quick note, the last update solved my issue. Root enabled now and backup scheduled.

Thanks, I went and installed CatLog on my phone and I've collected the logs that way. I'll be posting them shortly.

Just use the tool in my sig, and you have nothing to do ;)

Well, it's been months since I've used adb, so give me some time to set that back up. Unless there is a way to do this from the phone?

A bugfix release is scheduled for Monday which should probably solve other issues with Unknown button.

Also, there is an update from Google about the problem that people do not get Beta even they registered to Beta program. Read yourself:

Thank you for your note. There is currently an issue where devices with more than one account will sometimes receive the public production version of the app. To resolve this, please have the user navigate to the app page via the link on the opt-in page and install/re-install directly from there.

Still 2.0.4993 here, Google's suggestion is a little bit confusing since the only place to download from is the Google Play Store, and my Google Play Store seems to be completely stuck on 2.0.4993 ever since August 1st, 2013, as I never originally got the first Avast 3.0 Mobile Security Update even while 3.0 was still on there, only Anti-Theft and Backup got Updated, which tells me my issue is something completely different from everyone else here. I am about ready to throw in the Towel and wait until September. :-(

All ready have tried it 3 or 4 times now. The fact that I never received the 5545 update while 3.0 was still on my phone tells me that there is something wrong with my Google Play Store login. And then after I performed my un-root and factory reset that same day, I had then completely lost the 3.0.5535 Build that I already had and I have been stuck at 2.0.4993 ever since. You are the very first Veteran Poster here that has even been willing to talk to me about this problem here.

Does it support Jelly Bean 4.2 or does it only get Jelly Bean 4.1? My S4 has Jelly Bean 4.2.2 and that's with Stock Firmware (the only thing newer is 4.3).

Jelly bean 4.1.1

The ability to leave and rejoin the Beta is now Gone, most likely because the Beta is now filled to capacity.

Hi,

Last night I factory reseted my phone in hope that it helps the issue related to uninstall protection& app locking that I mentioned in this topic before. But now the issue is still not fixed, but there is a new problem.  It seems the processing of Virus Scanner, Privacy Advisor are not responding. Since the first install of AMS, it said that it was performing "Virus Scanner" and "Privacy Advisor". But the processing is still not completing now and staying on as the attached images.
I also tried restarting the phone but it can't fix the problem.

That's weird. After reboot, it gets stuck on the same percentage? Did you try to reinstall AMS? And why is it all red at the top?

Hi Filip,

Reinstall AMS and now all of the problems are fixed :) (including uninstall protection and app locking issue).
But the two talked above features aren't seem stable. The first time when uninstall or open an (locked) app (in order to test uninstall protection and app locking), it shows avast PIN, but after entered the correct PIN and try with another app, it doesn't show the PIN anymore. It takes sometimes to show PIN at the next testing time.
Regarding the red color at the top, it is the theme of my phone. As I know, the top of Google Play app is the same color. So I think it's okay ^^

I feel more comfortable now after a long time worried about issues with my AMS. By the way thank you Filip for your help. :)

actually this is intended behavior right now. If you insert the PIN in one sessions, you are authorized for all actions on that session.

Dear beta testers!

A week has passed - WOW, that fast! The beta test is now officially ended and we'll prepare for release. If you still have some issues, do not panic, we'll release some updates after release if we discover significant issues.

About the beta test itself: it was great, and your feedback was SO valuable! We found several significant bugs we would not have found without you. Thank you in the name of our team and in the name of all customers who you helped to save from trouble, for your support!

PS: if you stay in the Beta program, you'll receive further beta updates from us as we release them to the beta program. Note that those builds sometimes are unstable and not release quality. If you do not want this, go to the Google+ Community page and click the links to the top right where you can leave the beta test.

Note that your test license will stay valid until the end of August.

with best regards,
Reinhard

Though i am not a beta tester i received an update today telling me i can go premium, nice but there's no way to upgrade, all upgrade attempts end up in redirecting to Google Play where one can only remove avast! Mobile Security. Reinstalling (as the message to go premium says) just reinstalles the latest update. Clicking the link in the dashboard on the website to go downloading avast! Backup result in an error from Google Play that the file is not found.

Is this a joke or are we really going premium and if so how????

Regards, Zocor. ;)

Some screenies then, I also see my Dutch translations are not 100% need to contact Trevor about it ;) It could be though Trevor gave me a beta some time ago because of my translation efforts having an example to see if the length of the translations where correct. That might be the reason for this issue. It's no problem though. :P

Sorry it's in Dutch.

Let's share my story...

Back when I first wanted an anti-theft app I went out and compared the alternatives. At that time, I thought Avast had the greatest set of features available and after days of use and exploration, I was in love. I helped out by filing a few bugs that Reinhard Holzner kindly fixed in a quick manner. And best of all, it was free. I would even pay 5 bucks for it on the Play Store if that was the price. However, here's the problem. The only security feature I care about is anti-theft, no backup, no antivirus, no other. Paying 2 bucks a month for the extra features however will never going to happen in my case. I still think Avast Anti-Theft is one of the top anti-theft apps out there but the competition is strong. Since I'm not ready signing up for a subscription payment only for anti-theft, I'll happily move over to Cerberus and pay me into the premium features for only 3 dollars (one time payment). Before I uninstall Avast Anti-theft however, I want to thank Reinhard for his help and development for the app and the community of course.

I also want to report a minor bug with the beta release: When remotely taking pictures, the shot-sound will be heard. You should extend the time the device is muted in order to completely remove the sound. It's probably completely removed on other ROMs and phones, but on my Nexus 4 running CyanogenMod 10.1 (Android 4.2.2), the shot sounds. If it's possible, you could maybe remove the notification icon indicating the phone has gone into silent mode and immediately exited it.

Thanks for your time! Hopefully Cerberus is as great as Avast Anti-theft.

Hello,

1. I have a suggestion based on my experience in using AMS. As I told before, I had some issues with app locking and uninstall protection of AMS. While I was waiting for a solution from the team, I was trying many ways with hope to fix these issues, including factory reset. The inconvenience here was I had to manually configure settings for AMS, Anti-Theft (eg. set locked apps, protection behaviour, lock text, etc.) each time installed avast apps.

So I think it'd better to make an option "Sync settings from Archived device(s)". This option allows users sync their own settings of avast apps in their "archived" device(s). It's good in many cases as my experience above. :)

2. As again, how about my idea in this topic?

Quote
- The main interface seems difficult to see other features (which is available when slide to the right) and may make users wonder whether these features are still available. So I suggest adding a direct "user guide" interface in the first time of use about the "slide bar".

This user guide is a pattern which show a signal to the left slide.
By the way, I also remember that the AMS v2 show the slide bar automatically in the first using time to notice the user. But I can't find this in the beta version.

3. This relating to Backup. I ran a backup from my device before factory reset (all options selected, 50 MB restriction). After reseted, it couldn't restore all of my audio files and apk files (these files was missed). As I remember these files weren't larger than 50 MB. So what happened to my missing files?  :(

How to join the Beta test
  • Sign up to the Google Plus community here: https://plus.google.com/communities/112394513906169233317.
  • Click all the product links to the right and sign up as tester for our Beta program
  • After a while, you'll see upgrades to avast! Mobile Security and avast! Anti-Theft in the Google Play Store. Also, you'll see a new product, avast! Backup which you can install from Google Play.
!! Note that avast! Anti-Theft Advanced users (users who installed from our servers instead from Google Play) will need to send their IMEI to holzner@avast.com to get their Anti-Theft client upgraded to the Beta version !!
  • In order to get your free premium test license, open any of our apps and click on "Go Premium" button
  • Click on "Voucher" button to the top right of the screen
  • Enter AVASTBETATEST as voucher code
  • Get your free beta test license which will be valid until end of August
  • Deliver your feedback to this forum

We are looking forward to your feedback and are really happy to have you as our testers!
With best regards

the avast! Mobile Development team

I accidentally signed up for the free premium test license for Mobile Security & Antivirus using the Gmail account address that was presented to me by the app in the pre-filled field. However I wish to use a different address. I uninstalled the app, restarted the phone, then reinstalled the app, but when I tried to sign up again, I found that my registration info, including the incorrect email address, had been retained. I then redid the same process, but this time removing from the phone the Google account I had mistakenly used. Still no dice. Is there someway that I can replace the incorrect email address with the one that I want to use? Thanks very much.

So;
tested the BETAs round about for 10 days.

Feedback: great work

BUT

when you stay in a WLAN, Remotecontrol-things (such take picture and so on) wont work until the ports arent released for the device.

This is a real problem, i tried to fix it in my homeWLAN; but:

i have to assign the ports for each device seperately.
And in my WLAN are at least 5 devices.....with only 3 ports....

So, may you can find a workaround here... (DMZ is no option! ;) )

My router is a Fritz!Box 6360 cable.
My mobiles in the Beta are
- I9505 with CFroot on Stock Android 4.2
- N7105 CustomRom (CanogenMod 10.1)

the same problem are on my non BETA-mobiles (I9305, P5100 und a Sony LT18)

Hope, my feedback was helpful.

Ben

P.S.: Whats about a price for the Premium?

I used App Locking to lock settings, my files and superSU apps but when I unlock one app such as the settings, all of the rest also gets unlocked which is a big issue for me so you fix that by unlocking only the app I open and also should put a time limit for the app to be unlocked. For example, the settings app will automatically lock itself after 30 seconds after you leave the app. It would be nice if we can choose that time too.
I really like many of the features and I hope they will be free when released.
Keep up the good work and try fixing this stuff.

Hello kab,

Your suggestion is the same as mine that was discussed before.

Hi,

actually this is intended behavior right now. If you insert the PIN in one sessions, you are authorized for all actions on that session.

Filip

If you lock your screen and relock it you will get a pin promt again for locked apps :)

By the way, I think kab's idea is very awesome. We should have option to choose the time to lock/ unlock an app.

I take it you guys have stop activating Avast! Anti-Theft v3 BETA for users with root installation. I sent in my IMEI but I'm still not able to update to version 3.

Hi
So far I really like avast Beta and I hope many of the features remain free such as the taking photo feature because the only reason I use Lookout is for that feature. So hopefully, that feature will be free and for the premium version, I think a one time payment method is way better than a subscription because many more people would buy it, including me.

There seems to be an issue with Android 4.3. and the firewall.

On the Galaxy Nexus i9250 with Android 4.3 (build JWR66V) internet access is only granted, if firewall logging is activated.
At least some apps, like K-9 Mail, only can access internet with actice logging.
This appears as well over WLAN, as over 3G - both are allowed.
Firewall is in whitelist mode.
Im found this in Avast! 2 and changed to version 3.0.5718, where this problem still is present.

Workaround of course is activating the firewall log.
This seems a problem in combination with Android 4.3, as everything was fine in Android 4.2.
Other firewalls - like droidwall - show the same problem.

Keep in mind that most of us here don't have Android 4.3 yet! For example: My Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 still only has Android 4.2.2!

Thank you Mr. Holzner for adding me to your Anti-Theft Rooted IMEI list. I was having trouble Reinstalling the Standard Edition from the Google Play Store. It was giving me an error that the Package was Invalid (just like a couple of other things I like to install from the Google Play Store).

Avast Anti-Theft did successfully upgrade to 3.0 RC1 after I got your E-mail confirming that my IMEI had been added to the list.

Seems to be nice. I have a suggestion: Many hates any premium offers. So maybe you could write it in bold and big at the beginning of the description, that all free functions are still free and only new advanced features are available in premium :)

Edit:
Since weeks (after some support tickets) I can't control my avast Mobile Security through my.avast.com. Also the "connection problem helper" does not help anything - I have tried all points. A good friend have the same issues. I would like to get some support and get my avast app working again. The second issue is, that avast Backup is always in english even I changed the language in the main app to German.

Edit²:
After clearing all avast data and completely reinstalling the app it's working fine again.

Wish I could get the Final Version to Install, Google Play Store is saying that Avast Mobile Security 3.0 Final is NOT compatible with my Samsung Galaxy S4 running Android Operating System 4.2.2. Someone in the Google+ Forum thinks that this problem ONLY affects BOTH Android 4.2.2 AND Android 4.3! I don't know if that's true or NOT. I will post this in the Regular Forum as well, I just wanted to make sure the Beta Team knows that I am having a Problem Installing the Final Version of Avast Mobile Security from the Google Play Store!

Yes, avast Backup supports only English now. We (translators) haven't translated the Backup yet.

That's most likely because the Beta is OVER and the Official Release is out now. Unless you actually help out and help test the Beta while it's still in Beta, you have no right to try to claim that Voucher Code!

Avast Mobile Security 3.0 is now finally installing once again from the Google Play Store without the need of a .apk file. Thank you Avast Beta Team for fixing the problem with in the 24 hours of Official Release of 3.0 (like you promised me).
