Can't remove Avast error code 536870929
« on: January 05, 2009, 03:18:09 PM »
I unistalled Avast HE and another issue came afterwards where I had to restore. Avast showed up after restore so I tried uninstalling it and error came up. I can't re-install as it won't load. Tried aswClear.exe and didn't work. Any suggestions on how to remove error and Avast completely from my system. Running Vista Home Premium.

What was the other issue that you mentioned which required you to restore ?
The restore may have left you with a corrupt installation of avast.

Why didn't aswclear.exe not work, what errors reported ?

Did you run this from, safe mode ?

Issue was first started with HP Total Cade Avisor not recognizing PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AV. Went on HP online chap(my mistake) and they walked me thru uninstalling HP TCA and uninstalling Avast. Then installing HP TCA from Parasyche.com. Same problem came up on the Parasyche version was for laptops and I have a desktop. So then the tech had me do a restore from earlier date(mistake #2) and this is where the Avast error showed up on an uninstall.
Finally called HP and was informed that HP TCA is an intergrated OEM file and cannot be re installed.
However in Vista it has a security shield that I clicked on and there it shows my Spy/AV running.
I take full responsibility for fixing something that is already working and so far everything is working fine I just wanted to rid the error code and Avast and go on down the rode.
Thanks for everyone's input and have a great day.

OK I think I have the picture of the underlying issues as to what the other issue was. Unfortunately as you found you end up chasing problems caused by the actions taken to try and resolve the original problem up to the point the original problem is a distant memory.

So can  you try to answer the other questions relating to aswClear.exe:
When you ran aswclear.exe why didn't it work, e.g. what errors reported, etc. ?

Did you run this from, safe mode ?
If not that could be why it didn't work, see booting into safe mode http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

If the uninstall was partially successful it may have removed the program files folder and that would be needed as a reference point for the uninstall utility, so you may need to create these folders. Assuming that you installed avast into the default location create the avast folders (red) C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4 in the Program Files folder.

Boot into safe mode and run the aswClear.exe file.

My mistake of not downloading aswclear.exe, then restarting in Safe Mode.  Everything uninstalled cleanly and working great!
As far as HP Total Care Advisor issues is another mistake I made and have to live with the version of HP TCA that was designed for a laptop.
Anyway, thanks for your help and now it is time to go and hit the white ball(Golf)!  Make sure you keep your head down and don't lick your balls! Most golf courses use dangerous chemicals to fertilize the courses and can make you very sick........
