I have just started using Avast and have been looking for Log Files of various events . For example events such as downloading updates etc. Are there such event logs In Avast??

Hi Welcome to the forums.

Yes, Avast certainly has.

Which OS do you use?

For windows 7 : C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log

In all honesty, I keep my nose out of the logs, unless I have a specific problem as some are more useful to the developers and aren't too user friendly. The one that records information on the updates is C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\Setup\setup.log.

Other more user friendly logs are normally accessed from the avastUI, Real-Time Shields, specific Shield you are interested in and the Shield log text link. There are other text based logs for the shields, but they aren't the sort of thing I routinely check, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\report (or \log) for XP location and C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report (or log) for Vista, Win7.

Thanks  for your replies to my query on log files . I am using Win Xpsp3 . With you help I seem to have found them . Not quite what I was hoping they are all a bit complicated . I have until recently been using ESET and that provides an event log which shows history of update connections and version details of uploads in plain English . But never mind I will get used to Avast it seems to be working smoothly .

It rather depends on what it is that you are looking for ?

The files in the log or report folder are pretty clear depending on what it is you are looking for. As I said previously the more user friendly info is available form the avastUI, that is generally imported from the raw text files.

I don't understand the concern about chasing update history. The avast virus definitions and engine update is set to Auto, it checks when you first go on-line and every 4 hours after that (free version, can be lowered to 2 hours, the Pro version lower still). So you know that the update check is done automatically.

Should the update check fail, you will get a pop-up to report that, after an update check where an update is available, it is downloaded automatically in the background, when complete you get a pop-up notification and voice confirmation that the virus database has been updated.

So I can't see the need to record all of this, though it is there in a verbose state in the setup.log file.
