100% CPU usage

Your product is taking up ALL OF MY PROCESSOR. Also when I try to quit the processes hogging all the resources in the activity monitor, the program automatically turns it back on.

Is there anyway to make this product usable?

The free version

Mac 10.6.9

the processor is a 2.4 GHz intel Core 2 Duo so I believe that is 64 bit

there are between 3 to 5 "com.avast.MacAvast.MAD" processes running at any given time. They can each take up a large % of the CPU and they tend to pass it around until one maxes out and holds the system from other processing.

When I try to force close these so I dont have to restart, the program keeps restarting them.

com.avast.proxy
com.avast.helper
com.avas.fileshield also can take a large share of resources but it tends to be for a few seconds and is only 10-20%

com.avast.fileshield

Those (together with com.avast.MacAvast.MAD) are started by launchd as daemons, so they indeed get
automatically restarted if you kill them.

  • com.avast.MacAvast.MAD is the scan engine
  • com.avast.proxy is the web/mail shield
  • com.avast.fileshield is the file shield
  • com.avast.helper is the GUI helper application responsible for the popups

Hallo,
seems that some user application is creating/modifying some files on your filesystem (that's why the mediator, fileshield, takes 20% CPU, and scanner, MAD, the rest).
So, there must be some other active application, which is the real culprit. You can get a clue what application is causing this overhead also by looking at /var/log/avastdaemon.log file.

Regards,
pc

you might try disabling Web Rep, it is an extension in your browser
on my Mac, when I started with Web Rep active in Google Chrome, it used 1.8GB of ram, and then after several minutes slowly went down to 20mb
Disabling the extension, and Chrome starts up and uses 20mb

Had this problem for the first time today. Tried to do a program dump but that did not work. Found the repair feature on the left hand side of the uninstall menu. That did the trick.
