Title: Introducing: avast! BART CD 3.0 Beta
Post by: Forejt on September 15, 2008, 07:31:06 PM
Hi,

we've released beta version of BART 3.0

New features:
- based on Windows PE 2.1 (built from Vista SP1)
- all the drivers included on Vista SP1 are present
- new function "Add device driver", loads non-included driver for mass-storage or network devices from any available location (not just floppy)
- latest scanning engine
- plug&play - USB flash can be inserted while BART is running
- Altap Salamander 2.51

Note that with Windows PE 2.1, the requirements have changed:
BART CD can boot on systems that have at least 320 MB RAM, but it is recommended that you run only one application at a time.
Optimum is 512 MB RAM.

Download the setup here:
http://www2.avast.com/beta/bart_full.exe
File size is 137 807 950 bytes.

You can run this setup as a new installation or update over previous BART 2.0.
New virus database updates will be available for this beta at the same time as release version.

License:
Existing users can try this beta with the same license used for BART 2.0
If you don't have the license, you can ask for demo license here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/bart-demo-request.php

Any feedback is welcome.

Thanks!

Any suggestion? It would be good an open source one...
Also, network drivers or necessary files to dial-up or use a modem will be necessary, it won't be that easy to develop...

Just bought and downloaded the BART CD 2 to find that it didn't work on my laptop as it has an intel SATA controller and hard disk. Great to see that the new 3.0 Beta has the option to 'Add device driver".

I have just downloaded the 3.0 Beta and installed it over my version  2.0 so now

How do I find and use the 'Add device driver' option ?

Thanks

You should create iso image and boot it. Then you'll find the Add driver option as the last option. When you run it, file selection dialog will appear, select the driver's inf file and the driver will be loaded.

Will the user add each time he/she boots?
If so, why don't you add the driver to the ISO image generated?

Yes, the driver should be loaded each time the CD boots.
It can't be added by user to the ISO image, because it requires more tools that are part of Windows Automated Installation Kit (ImageX to mount the boot.wim image and PEImg to add the driver).
If users will ask for some specific driver that isn't included, we can add the driver as a part of program update.

I am trying out the beta too...

Please advice.

I got this error "Scanner has problem with the following areas
Area: Disk 1 Master Boot Record

You don't have to worry about it - BART is trying to scan a Master boot of a drive that is not present.
The problem will be fixed in the next update (or in the final version).

Hi,
I've just recently installed the AVAST BART CD 3.0 Beta tryout on a Windows Vista Ultimate platform. After the installation I used UltraISO and Nero 7 burning software to create an ISO Bart CD for bootup.  However, during the end of the burning process I receive a message of "Could not perform end of Disc-at-Once or "Burn failed at 10x or 48x".  Has anyone encountered such a problem on a Windows Vista platform?  If so, can someone tell me what I am doing wrong or if there is a solution to the problem.  Please advise.. ???

Are you using a CD-R or a CD-RW media?
Title: Re: Introducing: avast! BART CD 3.0 Beta
Post by: PCTek275 on November 11, 2008, 05:35:33 PM
Yes!  I've tried several times of burning the ISO and still the error message shows up.  I'm using an Aptiva brand for CD's and a Memorex CD-RW.

Hello everybody I would like to see from the avast bart cd manager to create an installation on the hard drive and when you start the computer can choose to boot from the operating system or the environment avast. Something like Norton Ghost 14.
I think it would be interesting, also some software to recover deleted files.
happy year. ;)

hi guys

downloaded and tried the nwe version and it looks nice :)

only one question  though

the old version supported using on machines with 256 ram and less (we have had it running on 128 before (slow but usable)

now it seems that it wont run on machines with less than 320 mb ram, this is a bit of a problem as a lot of older machines that we have through the workshop only have 256 ram and to find that we need to install temporary ram to ca pc to clean it is a bit daft

any way to have a compatability mode built in that would support the user of 256 ram to work it.  dont get me wrong this bit of kit is a god send and i erally dont mind if it takes a little longer to do its work but the idea that i have to put in extra ram to a machine for the sake of an extra 128 seems a little daft.

any ideas on a workaround or are we stuck with a 320 mb minimun?

keep up the good work guys

I'm not from Alwil and will say the obvious... but maybe things are getting a little bit complicated nowadays: the virus database is increasing day by day, the necessary drivers for compatibility and usability, etc., even the operational system that you can run at that low available RAM are getting out of support...
I think this is the way things are going, we can't stop using more RAM, although we should wish it.

hi mate
cheers for the reply, i kinda guessed that this was the way it was going to be

it is just that around 30% of all our machines that we service are are only on or around 256 ram ( sucks i know, but we work in one of the most deprived areas in the uk and higher end pcs are not the norm)

does anyone know if you can have version 2 AND the version 3 beta installed on the same machine and if so how this would affect our licence?

cheers in advance

Title: Re: Introducing: avast! BART CD 3.0 Beta
Post by: Vlk on January 05, 2009, 06:25:27 PM
The principal problem here is that BART 3.0 is based on the Vista kernel, while BART 2.0 is based on XP.
This speaks for itself (with respect to RAM usage). :)

Now, of course, we were thinking of ways to maintain compatibility with older systems (with low RAM). One possibility would be to release BART 3.0 but still keep offering 2.0 (as an option). I can't say this would make me too happy (maintaining two products instead of one), but it would probably be a way.

Thanks
Vlk

PS. maybe BART 4.0 will be based on W7-kernel, and will run OK even with systems with 256MB RAM... ;) :)

Well, I might think that as long as the company supports Win XP in their products, BART should support Win XP. So if BART 3 can't handle Win XP correctly, BART 2 should be available. [IMuHO]

I'm not sure I understand.

BART 3.0 (even if it's internally based on the Vista kernel) does support machines with Windows XP, of couse.

It's just that the RAM requirements are somewhat higher, namely, BART 3.0 requires a machine with at least 320MB of RAM.

I have tried to use the same method that I use to make bootable VISTAPE Flash Drives using the new AVAST Beta and it doesn't seem to work.
I get to the alwill splash screen, then the PC reboots.

Any ideas as to why this does not work?

It's now over 6 months since BART 3 Beta came out.  I spoke to Sales in Prague this morning and they were suppose to get back to me over 6 hours ago but haven't. The question is still "any idea when Bart 3 is coming out in its final version?" Or are you going to wait until Windows 7 comes out and you'll write for that instead?

Nonetheless, BART 2 continues to be invaluable to me, I just would like to have the next version in my toolbox.

I would love to see Bart CD 3 have the ability to create a cd or USB right from the interface, this would help with updates don't have to use another cd just rewrite over your usb. Is this even possible?
The ability to do a system restore would be the best! ;D
I am also on board with the web browser.

Well, you can use a CD-RW... but you shouldn't have to generate a CD that ofter, should you? ;)

I think this depend on Windows and can't be managed by 'outside'.

The features are usefull and I had no problems while using them...

The testing period is not the longest, but lets you try everything.

It would be a really interesting product if the price wouldn't be so high for a private person  :-\

Any work around for Windows Vista File Permissions. I have found on the old version of the Bart CD, I cannot get access to the /users directory, to delete any files there, so some file magic IGNORE file permissions, or bypass them by giving username / password would be a great addition to the cd. I haven't used the beta yet, but I think that Kmelon or firefox would be a great browser for it. I would also like to see some form of data recovery program in it, even something as simple as unstoppable copier, and recuva would be a nice, free touch. More network drivers, or better an integrated driver pack release for network adapters, for a cd that could be updated over the internet would be a welcome addition as well. Having used the AVG cd for years, it was a nice option to be able to update via USB and the internet, while at a customers home. One other suggestion, backup over the network feature would be nice, to push info to another pc on the network. These are some of the tools I found useful and in the competitions product.
One last suggestion...
BOOTABLE ANTISPYWARE SOFTWARE! 90 percent of the problems my clients have, are spyware related. I would LOVE to see Malwarebytes Antimalware in a BART CD release! Would save me much time and many headaches.

Vista permissions are such that most software viewing an cold mount vista volume would have the exact issue you describe. Even loading the registry hive would only help so much as you would need the PE explorer to run as the user accessing the folder and files in question.

I just bought the bart cd from avast... Version 2 doesn't work on the computer I'm attempting to fix (ACPI.SYS error.)   I went to download the version 3 beta, but it just comes to a page cannot be displayed page.   Is it just temporarily down or is the outage permanent?

I am attempting to download it from: http://www2.avast.com/beta/bart_full.exe

Any update to Bart CD v3 Beta?

  - STILL won't boot newer Dell systems (gets to the ALWIL Avast! splash screen, "Loading, please wait" then whole system reboots, no errors, no messages, NADA!)
  - What about booting Windows 7 systems?  CD Boots (v3 Build 4.8.1317.0 Virus DB 100316-0) an OLD Dell (beefed up to run Win 7) and Windows 7 new directory structure (i.e. "Documents and Settings" doesn't 'really' exist in Win 7) as well as the tighter security, Avast can't access ALL directories (LOTS of "File scan failed!" messages)!
  - No "Live" updates (seems like a no brainer, you've got network access, you've got a RAM disk for temp storage).
  - What about making a bootable USB 'flash' drive?

Even though I do not own this product, I would have to say development wise it is dead. Almost 2 years in beta and no response from support indicates to me that nobody should buy this product until some response comes from the developers. It is obvious they follow this board and since there has been no response after all of these requests for an answer I can only assume there will be no more development for this product. There are other alternatives for this product such as the AVG boot CD which is free and also programs that can edit the registry offline if needed. Maybe it has to do with licensing of the WINPE portion of the program, but I would think long and hard before buying this product.

Ok I just renewed a purchase for BART and again had to download version 3 because 2 isn't compatible with my district's newer computers. I wrote the ISO and booted the CD in the computer. It gets to the black Alwil screen and reboots. I hope I didn't pay for something that I can't use and second is being replaced with a Rescue CD that it looks like we don't have access to.

I would ask for a refund. Version 3 has been in beta for over 2 years and nothing is heard from the developers on status. There are other bootable CD's out there that can do the same thing and some probably better. They should not have taken your money.

Network on RescueCD works only on wired connection, because Windows PE doesn't officially support it (doesn't include gui for selecting wireless AP).
Well, there is unofficial way that shows it's possible (google PENetwork), but we have not decided if/when we'll support it.

Thanks Forejt.
Seems that you need to configure/support it internally.
I can't see a way of calling it within avast Rescue CD. Is there a way to do so? How?

By the way, avast Rescue CD cannot be started by VirtualBox. Why? It returns a black window while loading.

it would be great if Avast would make a small unofficial guide to get the wireless working at own risque... that way support is not needed but you offer great service towards customers...

+1 (complete guide: links to download drivers, how to do it, etc.).
Better will be a build-in solution.

Still pending: the Virtualbox question of mine above...

Still pending: the Virtualbox question of mine above...

I just tried to boot it in VirtualBox with Win7 x64 and it works for me.
Does your virtual machine have at least 512 MB memory and IDE disc controller?

Ok, avast Rescue CD runs... but can't update through the bridged connection of VirtualBox.

I didn't try it in bridged mode, the network works for me in NAT mode.

Sorry, my fault. I mean NAT mode. It does not reach the server for me.

Well I tried to down load and install it but the License manger said my license had expired??
I have avast running and the expiration date is 1 year from now.. is there a separate license needed for Bart Cd?

Also is there some way to use the dll32 file to incorporate it into a small VB2010 program to scan a machine that may or maynot have Asast installed? Or should i just link to an Install.exe (dll)
Please checkout what I am attempting to do.. I think this would be a great Tool..

Thanks for any input.

I am wondering is there a secure AntiVirus Application Programming Interface SDK for software programers to use to run a simple scanner of a system Drive and quarantine delete repair ignore Install Update ..
I am writing a system cleaner tool that uses windows basic delte history, cookies, tempfiles.. ect. and I want to include Avast as an online scan or install directly to their machine.

Thanks

Hi Avast!

Like a few guys on this topic, the new Bart PE does not work. It loads and I can see the Avast splash screen and then the PC reboots. I just purchassed the product and I would either like a solution or I will request a refund.

Please provide us a solution.

can you create a new thread for this?

you are posting in an obsolete thread for an obsolete product.

To focus attention on your problem you have to start your own new thread

in the new thread can you post how you start?
CD? USB?
computer setup (harddisks on IDE or SATA  cd/dvd drive on IDE or SATA)?

Given that the BART CD is no longer being sold why don't we close this thread and unstick it from the forum?

Is there a version with full 64bit support yet?  Id love to use Avast Registry Cleaner (from the disk) on my 64bit machines...
