Failure of Avast HardwareID Serice
« on: April 21, 2014, 12:28:33 PM »
Hi
I am using the latest version of Avast on my PC running Windows XP Home with SP3, which updated this morning.

I noticed that an error appeared three times in Event Viewerto advise me that the Avast HardwareID Service failed to load with an explanation that is meanilngless to me.

I attach a screen grab of the error in Event Viewer and wonder whether anyone can explain what this error might relate to.  I have not changed any hardware or any configuration settings in the BIOS on the PC and this error has only appeared since the latest update today.

Hi

No changes I'm afraid.  Despite this apparent fault it doesn't seem to affect the workings of Avast.  Also I cannot find such a service listed in Administartive Tools>Services so I cannot determine what it is referring to.

A search reveals others having this error reported after the latest update.  Perhaps it is a glitch in the avast! software?

This is description of STATUS_INVALID_BLOCK_LENGTH. This status code is used by aswHWID to report corrupted SMBIOS data block. You can ignore this.

I too am having this problem with the hardwareID error showing in the event viewer five or six times a day. As I strive to keep my event viewer error free, this is annoying and unacceptable. I do not wish to simply ignore it. Is there a fix yet?

No fix as yet.  I did contact Avast for advice - their solution was an uninstall and removal using their tool and then a clean reinstall but that didn't work either.  It only started happening with the latest version update.

Thanks EricG. My problem also started with the latest update, and nothing I've tried works. I wonder if it's only affecting XP users.

I'm Windows 8.1, and it's affecting me as well.  This update has not been good for my system and I can never pinpoint what the exact problem is.  Everything was perfect for me before this update.

What does hardware-assisted virtualization do, and what are the consequences of disabling it?

Everything was prefect for me too. It's very annoying. Disabling hardware-assisted virtualization doesn't fix it on my computer.

I tried this and it made no difference on my PC either.
