DURING SCAN PROCESS ON THE HOME VERSION .

AFTER THE SCAN PROCESS IS COMPLETED.MY FILES SAY THEY ARE UNABLE TO BE OPENED IN THE ACTION WINDOW?WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? AM I UNABLE TO SCAN FOR VIRUS'S?

Hello and welcome :)

Well, this question is asked and answered a lot of time here, if you want you can do a forum search about this topic, and I am sure you will find a lot of info ;)

These files aren't viruses or something like that, they are just unable to scan( for example they are password protected - no AV can scan password protected files) ;)

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn't know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can't be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

Files that can't be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

My scan log shows an entry of
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\JET1E93.TMP [E] THE PROCESS CANNOT ACCESS THE FILE BECAUSE (32)
Several other entries have code (32) also and some have other codes like (18) and (42000), etc.  Where is the directory that explains what the codes mean? I did already try searching this web site for the codes and no results were found.

32 is "sharing violation", meaning that the file is opened by some other process/thread and avast! cannot open it. It's perfectly normal, nothing to worry about.
