unknown software exception 0xc0000417
« on: January 28, 2012, 04:43:00 AM »
After being away from my computer for a couple of hours, I returned to find two pop-ups reading:

"AvastSvc.exe Error
The exception unknown software execption (0xc0000417) occurred in the application at location 0x7858ccd5"

and

"AvastSvc.exe Error
The exception unknown software execption (0xc0000417) occurred in the application at location 0x785569d0"

My background was black, the task bar was missing,  and Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) was not responding.  I had to power off and re-boot.

AvastSvc generated an error log, a unpXXXXX.temp.mdmp file, and multiple unpXXXXX.mdmp files.

I have made multiple attempts to upload a zipped folder of the error log and MDMP files to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming.  Each attempt has ended after about two hours (with two to three hours remaining) giving the message:

"An error occurred copying a file to the FTP Server.  Make sure you have permission to put files on the server.
Details:
The operation timed out"

My system is running Avast 6.0.1367 on Windows XP/SP3.

Please note:  I did not use "http://ftp://..." as shown in the previous post.  I used "ftp://...".  I also tyed "ftp://..." in the previous post, but the Forum software added the "http://" part.

Use the "ftp" tags:

ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming

BTW, the ftp location is write - only: you can write to it (using Windows explorer or an FTP tool), but you won't be able to read the content of the incoming folder (you will still see it empty once the file is uploaded).

Once you get the zipped archive successfully uploaded, you should post here the exact file name (which should be unique, as in "donb6806_2012JAN28_01.zip" for example.

When I attempt to upload, after approximately 2 hours (with 2-3 hours remaining) I get:

"An error occurred copying a file to the FTP Server.  Make sure you have permission to put files on the server.
Details:
The operation timed out"

(I used the "ftp://" tags, but when I try to type the complete URL in my post, the forum's software inserts "http://".)

@donb6806,

First, the "ftp" tags are
Code: [Select]
[ftp][/ftp] located in the 4th icon from the left of the second row (when you are writing a post).

About uploading to the incoming ftp location, you are probably using a "too big" archive in relation to a "low bandwidth" upload speed.

Try making a "better" zipped archive (higher compression), or try using a rar, or 7zip or cab archive instead. Another possibility is to split the zip in several smaller parts as in (for example)
Code: [Select]
donb6806_2012JAN28_part01.zip
donb6806_2012JAN28_part02.zip
donb6806_2012JAN28_part03.zip...

(personally, I would choose much higher compression with some other format instead of zip).

The other (or additional) possibility, instead of higher compression, is to go to some Internet cafe or alike and upload the archive using a higher upload speed.

Thank you for the clarification on the FTP tags.

I have re-compressed the folder using the newest version of 7zip (the version I was using was five years old!) set to "ultra" compression.  If that does not work, then next attempt will be to divide it up.  I will let you know when something works.

The error log, a unpXXXXX.temp.mdmp file, and multiple unpXXXXX.mdmp files have been uploaded to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming in two 7-zip files named:

donb6806-2012jan28-part1.7z and
donb6806-2012jan28-part2.7z

Thank you for your help with this.
