avast causing internet connection issues.
« on: September 07, 2009, 03:58:03 AM »
My subscription to Trend Micro expired so I decided to try a free anti virus program. After doing some research I decided that Avast was probably my best choice. I downloaded and updated it and after doing so I started a full scan then went to bed. The next day I started having problems connecting to the internet. I couldn't get web pages to load in any browser. I tried Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer same problem with each one. Other programs connecting to the internet did not have any issues, including online games, and voice chat programs.
I disabled Avast and the connection issues were resolved. I then removed avast and downloaded AVG and the exact same problem occurred with AVG.

I don't have any idea what could cause this kind of thing. I didn't have any issues with Trend Micro.

My laptop is running Windows Vista 64 bit
I uninstalled Trend before I installed Avast.
I uninstalled Avast before I installed AVG.

I really would like to use Avast if anyone can help me resolve this problem...

Did you use a removal tool after uninstalling each? It would be best to run their respective removal tool to eliminate all possible remnants that could interfere/conflict with the next AV to be installed.

What firewall do you use? Do you have any antivirus running alongside avast/AVG/TrendMicro?

I didn't use any kind of removal tool, just selected uninstall from the programs and features in the control panel.
I have zone alarm firewall.
Not running any other Virus protection software.

Removal Tools:

(1) avast! Uninstall Utility
       http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

(2) AVG Remover

(3) Trend Micro / PCCillin

Use them before installing another AV.

I think I may have also used McAfee at some point in the past, is there one for it as well?

Here http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507 .

Note: If use of removal tools does not work, the problem might be caused by viruses.

I'm trying the Trend Micro removal tool, but it doesn't seem to be working, I still have a lot of Trend Micro Files in my Program Files(x86)

Try working on it in Safe Mode.

What can i do if I can't access safe mode because the avast scan page wont budge or let me do anything. I can't even turn the thing off no matter how much I turn the pc off or turn it off and own.

avast! Scan page? Did you mean boot time scan? You may press ESC to bypass boot time scan.

Regarding safe mode, just restart your PC then, at the very first screen that'll appear, hold f8 until a selection window is presented. From there choose Safe Mode. Then select Windows XP. Then there you go. Just select Yes on the next pop up asking you if you are sure to boot into safe mode.

I am actually facing the same issues as you have, on a laptop, running vista (32-bit) with zonealarm and avast free edition. After a while, when I try opening a webpage in my browser, I get "website found, waiting for reply" in the left below corner , and the browser isnt going anywhere. When I started stopping the avast services (after killing nearly every other service and firewalls),I noticed that the problem got resolved when I stopped the avast webshield service. A temporary workaround for me was to install a tool named fiddler,a browser debugger, which allows you to launch an iexplorer from within the tool, and this works without issues, even when at the same time iexplorer does not work directly.

best regards,

G.

Make sure avast WebShield is allowed to access the Internet in Zone Alarm.
