Avast and SSL (gmail) - is there a simple solution?
« on: March 23, 2011, 09:09:58 AM »
This is quite a big security hole, and one that needs a simple solution ASAP IMO. gmail is here to stay, as is avast, but expecting users to install additional software just to get avast to scan their email is a bit of a stretch...
So my question is: Is there a simple way get avast internet security to scan gmail?

Win7 x64/Thunderbird/gmail

yes, if you sett it up correct   ;)

all attachments will be scanned by the file shield if you save or open!

avast! 5.x: Some e-mails are not scanned by the Mail Shield

OBS: Google is protecting all gmail accounts with Postini spam/virus filter using twin AV engines from McAfee and Authentium

Thanks for the reply.
..so essentially I disable SSL in Thunderbird and let avast handle the encryption? Is this safe?

Since the instructions are only for Outlook (kind of shortsighted IMO) i don't know if I need to disable both incoming and outgoing server security?
I've disabled incoming from SSL/TLS to none, but outgoing server (SMTP) is still on STARTTLS. Do I need to set that to NONE as well?

Yes avast will do the SSL

I am not very familiar with Thunderbird but maybe Logos can help you if he see this...
Or try forum search as this has been asked many times before...

Considering that Google's mailservers will ONLY let you connect when connection is encrypted, you have already tested it.
