NB connect error 1460 due to Avast using port 25
« on: August 12, 2013, 11:24:55 PM »
Comcast no longer uses port 25 for outgoing emails. And even when changing to outgoing port 587 via my Thunderbird program, I kept receiving error message NB connect error 1460.
I thought it was a Thunderbird issue, it wasn't.
Thought it was a Comcast issue. It wasn't.

Couldn't figure out what was causing the problem until I found others experiencing the same problem online:

https://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/outgoing_messages_not_going_anywhere_plain_timeout_or_nb_connect_error_1460

Apparently, Avast is still using port to 25 to send emails that it's scanned (?)  ... even when we specifically say to use a different port. As a Comcast user and an Avast user the only way I can get my outgoing emails to send is by turning off Avast's outgoing scan function.

Avast tech people please check into this issue. I'd like to be able to scan my outgoing emails again.
Incoming emails are not an issue.
Thank you.

Cybersecurity is more of an attitude than anything else. Avast Evangelists.

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

I was able to resolve this (or something very similar) by going to Avast's Mail Shield SETTINGS and deleting everything on the "SSL scanning" page.

I have came across this recently when i changed my ISP when travelled and was getting the same message,
Investigation did not bring much apart from the fact that it was related to avast. But further investigation actually showed that avast is ok but the ISP is blocking port 25, Avast just throws this message to say that it cannot connect to smtp server on that port.
to fix it i have fixed this by using alternative SMTP port (8889 for my mail provider ) and all works straight away.

I have tried all I can to fix this problem. My ISP says only port 25 is available so I can't do anything there. I have totally removed avast using their cleaner tool. I am desperate to send emails. I cannot afford to upgrade my windows at this time.

Unfortunately if you're not using Comcast, then you're comparing Apples to Oranges. :)

I am experiencing same issue. Only way to receive my messages is to turn off avast for 10 minutes and turn it back on.

Well having that said ... Maybe its not same since I actually have problem with 110 port and pop3. But its similar.

"NB connect error 1460"

[Edit]
And with sending:
Service not available, closing transmission channel. The server response was: Cannot connect to SMTP server [IPADDRESSANDPORT], NB connect error 1460
