Just a quick word of advice for anyone who runs Windows 7 x64 on Apple hardware using BootCamp: The UK distributors Avosec advised me that the rescue CD will not be able to scan and clean the partition, so save your $10 and find another product that will (MS Dart 6.5 seems to do the job admirably).

They didn't specify whether it was the GPT, BootCamp, or the fact it's 64-bit that was the problem, so I can't say whether it would work for other BootCamp users or not, sorry!

What does happen?
When I tried, I can't boot the iso, just got a blank screen.
Maybe it's a limitation of Windows PE that, maybe, can't be boot by iso.

To all intents and purposes it doesn't matter as the .iso file is just a copy of the original CD, etc. and once burned to a CD or DVD becomes an exact copy of that disk.

I don't know if it is possible to burn an .iso file to a USB stick, if so that would become a copy of that bootable image but on USB rather than CD/DVD, etc. Simply copying the .iso to a USB stick won't work.

Your motherboard/BIOS would also have to support booting from USB and that would have to be the first boot device.

When I try, it acts like nothing is there and boots like normal.  I select USB device in the boot menu but it still acts like nothing is there and boots like normal.

Hi,

I've got avast! Rescue-CD in a USB Pendrive and it's working. I used:

1. Insert your USB (4GB+ preferable) stick to the system and backup all the data from the USB as we are going to format the USB to make it as bootable.

2. Open elevated Command Prompt. To do this, type in CMD in Start menu search field and hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter. Alternatively, navigate to Start > All programs >Accessories > right click on Command Prompt and select run as administrator.

3. When the Command Prompt opens, enter the following command:

DISKPART and hit enter.

LIST DISK and hit enter.

Once you enter the LIST DISK command, it will show the disk number of your USB drive. In the below image my USB drive disk no is Disk 1.

4. In this step you need to enter all the below commands one by one and hit enter. As these commands are self explanatory, you can easily guess what these commands do.

SELECT DISK 1 (Replace DISK 1 with your disk number)

CLEAN

CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

SELECT PARTITION 1

ACTIVE

FORMAT FS=NTFS

(Format process may take few seconds)
ASSIGN

EXIT

Don’t close the command prompt as we need to execute one more command at the next step. Just minimize it.

5. Insert your Windows DVD in the optical drive and note down the drive letter of the optical drive and USB media. Here I use “D” as my optical (DVD) drive letter and “G” as my USB drive letter.

6. Go back to command prompt and execute the following commands:

6.1. Change directory to the DVD’s boot directory where bootsect lives:
d:
cd d:\boot

6.2. Use bootsect to set the USB as a bootable NTFS drive prepared for a Vista/7 image. I’m assuming that your USB flash drive has been labeled disk G:\ by the computer:
bootsect /nt60 g:

(Where “G” is your USB drive letter)

7. Copy avast! Rescue-CD ISO contents to USB.

You are done with your bootable USB. You can now use this bootable USB as bootable DVD on any computer that comes with USB boot feature (most of the current motherboards support this feature).

I have not tried to put this on Unetbootin but it should be noted that Unetbootin has to be put on a flash drive that is formatted to FAT32 and not NTFS.

http://www.avast.com/products#tab3 will take you to the Avast! Rescue Disk purchase option.

My comment is that I can't seem to update the definitions via the built in link.

Hello.
I get Runtime Error (Program E:\bart\AvastPE.exe  This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way) when i try to select Other Folders to Scan.
Also the Browse(...) button for "Folder for temporary files" doesn't work, so archives cannot be scaned. I still have to try if it works when i put the path manually.

Hi edj,

Just like to say Thanks!
Followed your instruction. It works like a charm! =)

To Avast Developers,
Can kindly consider the following?
1) Notepad editor with line numbers. (currently no line numbers. v1.05)
2) A web browser (we need to search internet for solutions at times)
3) safemsi (uninstall problematic programs)
4) Startup Config editor (Remove unwanted programs from startup)
5) Native, Easy way to create a bootable USB without going through the steps listed by edj. (click button in windows?)

i would like a suggestion too

a small program that dumps system information to a file
info like:
machine windows name
machine asset tag
lan MAC address(es)
machine UUID / GUID
and other hardware info about the processor, memory

specially the MAC/GUID info would be useful to me
