Hello.
This is a pretty cut and dry issue....when Avast is activated, I top out at 10mbs....when it's disabled or paused, I'm at 30mbs, which is where it should be. I have run multiple tests on speedtest.net, and the results are always the same.
Any settings in Avast that can correct this problem???
-
To see if this is correct you need to download a huge file, and time the download with Avast and without avast
I had the same problem with Malwarebytes IP protection, but i was just the IP protection of Malwarebytes fooling the speedometer at speedtest.net
Try download this 314.4 mb

Thank you!!! I will try doing that later on, after I get back from doing a few things....but let's just assume it's slower with avast running, is there not anything I can do?

Have no idea....get the result first, then maybe somone from Avast team can tell you......
hmmm....think i have to test this also

Avast scans your internet activity which takes time to do however, the amount of time or, the slowdown it results in, is negligible.

Welcome to the forums, Mike. :)
Please tell us about your computer system specs ... cpu, ram, programs running at start-up, etc.

MikeFriedman,
avast! doesn't slow my internet down, but Outpost firewall greatly slows my internet speed.
Are you using Outpost firewall?
Sunbelt firewall also slows my internet down.
-
Thanks, all, for taking the time out to help.
I'll try and list the specs, but I'm not too technical, so bear with me ;D
I have a 2.66 core duo processor
8 mb ram
windows 7 pro 64 bit
sony vaio, is the make
As far as programs running at start, i keep it at a minimum. avast, bluetooth, my printer, adobe, and some other commands that I have no idea what they are (as per C Cleaner).
As an update to this problem, I tested other locations at speedtest.net, and it's either 10mbs or 30 mbs, but I've achieved 30 mbs with avast running. I suppose maybe Avast is not always a problem, but sometimes I do get internet slowdown when it's running. When I have it disabled, I'm always at 30 mbs. Any ideas?

Well, no it isn't..... I have a 20/5 connection and it drops to 11/2. I do not consider 1/2 my dl\ul speed acceptable. Is there a fix?? Thanks

have you tried timing a download as suggested in reply #1 ?

There is a little noticeable slowing down when browsing new sites with Avast that are not cached.
A slight slowing.

Me neither.

Speedtest.net test is un-reliable.
-
I use Speakeasy (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/).
With cable internet there will be variances each time you check the speed, often the variances will be great.

It depends on how many people on the same cable connection and what they are doing.
I get reliable results:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 5892 kbps (736.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 664 kbps (83 KB/sec transfer rate)
Speed (advantage - Cable): Cable boasts faster speed than DSL Internet in theory. However, cable does not always deliver on the promise in everyday practical use.

Cable modem services can slow down significantly if many people in your neighborhood access the Internet simultaenously.

Also, if a site is slow to load, no matter how fast your internet speed is you may not be able to load it any faster than someone on dial-up.
Sometimes avast!webforums is that slow, sometims we can't load it at all. :'(

Wow over 700kbs?Surprising mine is only 72kbs :(

Have now done the test with AVAST 5.0.332 free and wireless conection to linksys WRT610N
downloaded XP-SP3 316mb
Win7 - defender and firewall
have run ccleaner between each download
avast on
1: 14.39 369 kb/sek
2: 15.07 357 kb/sek
3: 15.20 352 kb/sek
avg: 14.88 359 kb/sek
avast off
1: 15.59 337 kb/sek
2: 13.26 402 kb/sek
3: 12.54 418 kb/sek
avg: 13.79 385 kb/sek
so my conclusion to this highly scientific test.... :D.... is that the slowdown is minimal
and that the web shield is fooling the speedometer at speedtest.net

The difference is so small that you would miss it if you blinked your eye (http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/nov98/911697403.Me.r.html). :) ;D
