how can you re-download an avast product you've bought???
« on: March 14, 2010, 12:24:23 AM »
Hello! im not very computer literate so simple answers please!!
I recently had a virus warning come up randomly from a company called "Personal Security" saying i had over 40 various virus' and trojans etc and 2 buy their product. I was very wary as id never heard of them before and it was american. I went to renew my McAfee anti-virus but it came up an infected site&closed the window, so i tried the norton website and the same happened again. I eventually managed to get onto the avast website and bought and downloaded the anti-virus, added the license and done a thorough scan. This came up all clear but this bloody personal security thing kept coming up  saying my comp was infected and they had somehow put an icon on my screen?? i spoke to a friend who suggested doing a system restore to a date before the "infection" occured, install a spybot and all should be well as iv got my avast anti-virus and my spybot!! but here's the problem........ i've now done the system restore, no more "personal security" in my icons but also no avast icon or anti-virus??!!! i've paid £30 for 2yrs worth but now no anti-virus!!! how can i download it without paying again?? PLEASE HELP A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS!!!

Personal Security is a rogue AV.  Don't fall for it.  See this link:

Quote
What this programs does:

Personal Security is a rogue anti-spyware program from the same family as Cyber Security. This program is promoted through the use of malware that will install it on your computer without your permission. In order to protect itself, this program will automatically attempt to terminate security programs that may help to remove it. When installed, Personal Security will be configured to start automatically when Windows starts. Once started, it will scan your computer and display a variety of infections, but will state that it will not remove them unless you first purchase the program. In reality, the infections it finds are either fake or legitimate programs that if deleted could cause problems with the proper operation of Windows. Therefore, please do not act upon any of the files it states are infections.

Redownload Avast Pro if that is the version you bought, install it.  You should have an Avast licence sent to you when you purchased it, just double click licence.avastlic and the licence will install itself and you are up and running

Hi  :)

Can I just give a bit more advice...

* Because you have done a System Restore .. You might find that Avast is kind of.. Half In - Half Out!
This isn't Avast's fault! - It's just a consequence of System Restore ::)
But before reinstalling your Avast 5... It might be a good idea to run the Avast Uninstall Utility from Safe Mode: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

* Because we know that your computer has been infected by a Rogue  :o
You might want to install either one or both of these...
SAS : http://www.superantispyware.com/
MBAM : http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Note!
You only need the FREE version - & - You can keep them forever  :D
Just make sure...
1) You update them every few days
2) Run a scan as and when you feel the need  ;)
