Hi all,
My dad bought 3 pc licence for avast internet security and ran into some troubles after upgrading our free versions we had running.
First my main pc with w7 ultimate 64b stopped having internet, after going trough loads of posts on the forum (uninstalled the internet security and reinstalled the free version to be able to).
I ended up using the removal tool and save mode and removed all avast stuff and used removal tool for ad-aware and then ran cccleaner rebooted again and installed internet security
and everything is working fine now.
Then i went to my dads xp sp3 machine did exactly the same thing, but you guessed it, no internet. Not even when turning of all shields and the firewall...
The only way i found to have internet working with avast internet security installed is by not installing the firewall, wich seems well uhhh not what i want :P
Tried all the ways i could find on the forum, like the uninstaller tool and the use fast checksum checkbox, cleaning the registry with cccleaner.
Atm i have internet security installed without the firewall (tho avast ui still sees it, prob becaus i used the system restore point i made before adding the firewall module).
Obviously avast can't activate it caus it's not actually there, but that's not the issue at hand anyway.
Also tried both the dutch and the english version.
Any suggestions for making the firewall work ?
The win xp professional dutch version with fully updated sp3 had no other virus scanners or firewalls installed then ad-aware prior to upgrading free avast to internet security
btw. i had this whole story written out (maybe even more properly, but i am bad at those verifications and lost my whole story and had to type it again, tad anoying :(
Edit :
Modified with bit more info

I suggest that you uninstall ad adware since this has been known to conflict with Avast in the past with many users and may contain an AV. Reboot. Instead you can download and install Malwarbytes Anti-Malware (MBAM), which most of us use here and detects more, and is compatible with Avast. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) - there is a Free (on-demand) and Pro (resident) version.
Second, since you did a system restore, I would do an uninstall/clean install of Avast:
1. Save a copy of Avast and save it to your HDD:
Version 7.0.1456:
Avast Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe)
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD.
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Go into Safe Mode (http://Safe Mode) (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool. Uninstall ALL previous versions and products of Avast you had on this machine and reboot in between each uninstall.
6. Reboot.
7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
8. Get Internet access and add the license key AIS online.
9. Update the Avast definitions.
Let us know if this fixes your problems.
-
Yes as i explained i did all that, i removed ad-aware with ad-aware removal tool, removed avast with removal tool cleaned reg with ccleaner and then reinstalled avast, including all the rebooting between every uninstall ;)
Btw point 3 and 8 are rather hard without internet connection due to it beeing blocked by the firewall module :P
-
have there ever been any other AV then avast on that computer......preinstalled when new, or just tested ?
if so, find the removal tool run it and reboot http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/
-
No no other stuff then ad-aware wich i removed with the apropiate tool, as mentioned ;)
-
Atm i have internet security installed without the firewall (tho avast ui still sees it, prob becaus i used the system restore point i made before adding the firewall module).
Did you use the Avast Uninstaller tool to delete ALL versions and products on the machine with a reboot in between each one while ad ad aware was OFF your machine?
-
thnx for the quick response again, but yes i did.
I surfed these forums for nearly 2days before posting becaus none of the usual answers i found seem to work, while it worked on my main pc like that.
-
What version of AIS were you using or trying to use?
-
Right should have included that in the first post, it's 7.0.1456
Sorry got to leave now for a bit, will check in as soon as i get back.
Hope to find some nice options i can try when i do get back.
-
On Win XP 32b:
- Download http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/dd996900.aspx (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/dd996900.aspx)
- open cmd and navigate to directory with procdump
- create a dump file by command c:\procdump.exe avast.setup
Upload it to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming/ (http://ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming/). Avast will analyze the problem and report back to you in this thread.
Self defense might be requested to be turned off > avast! ui > settings > troubleshooting > disable self defense.
-
Thanks, will do as soon as i can get some time behind my dads rig again.
Tho as i make up from the technet topic it seems to mostly check for cpu usage ?
Did not notice any unexpected cpu spikes during install or afterwards, but will try :)
May take some time before i get acces to the pc tho.
-
Uploaded the avast dmp file created by procdump.
-
maybe a important sidenote, i can ping my main pc from that pc, just don't get the internet trough.
-
You sent the dump file to the link I sent you? If so, at this point we need to wait for Avast to analyze it and respond back to you in this thread.
-
Yeah send it to the provided link :)
Patiently awaiting response.
-
You may have to be very patient, but we'll wait and see. I'm here waiting with you. :)
-
hehe nice to know someone cares along :P
-
Hmm is there an indication of how long it usually takes ?
And they do look at IP i gues right ? It's not that they look inside that dumpfile and look for the registration wich is on my dads name ? :P
-
Did you add this topic URL to your ZIP file ? What was the name you gave the file you sent ?
-
I figured that they would check ip, and no zip file just the dumpfile as reuested by SafeSurf.
-
What about the name you gave it ?
-
I was not asked to give it a specific name, so i just uploaded it as it was wich is "avast_120718_230002.dmp".
-

Well. At least now Avast! team can know to whom the dump file belong to and may answer here. Good luck.
-
Ah yeah considering i can see my ip next to my posts i kinda figured they would put 1 and 1 together :P
Thanks for thinking along.
-
I kinda wish they would somehow let me know if they did find the file, then again if they didn't they wouldn't know to look for my topic ?
I can understand things taking awhile, but now i don't even know if they are actually busy with it.
And it is slightly annoying that as soon as you pay for avast it turns of the internet :P
-
I did ask the Avast Team if they are working on it or received it. Since it is the weekend, we probably won't hear anything now, but they should respond in the thread. Should I hear something, I will let you know in the thread. Thank you for your patience.
-
Cool thank you very much !
The patience for me isn't the problem, i am a eve online player :P
The thing is it's my dads pc and he has a tad less patience and keeps asking haha
-
I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I don't see the point of the original suggestion (though I might be missing something). avast.setup is the updater process... so if there was a problem with updating the program or virus definitions, then maybe the dump could reveal something - but not for system-wide problems with the network.
I don't really know much about the firewall, Lukor could have more insights (and possibly simpler things to check), but if we're talking about dumps, my guess is that the relevant ones here might be the firewall service (afwServ.exe), but most likely a full system dump (https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71) would be needed.
-
Igor, will you be contacting Lukor or do you want me to PM him about this? The OP has been very patient. Or do you want the OP to do a full system dump for you? Please specify. Thank you.
-
Sooo ? what am i to do ? :)
Just wait or upload something else ?
-
Kinda still waiting here.
-
Kinda still waiting here.
Did you create and upload the dump file requested:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=101561.msg814860#msg814860 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=101561.msg814860#msg814860)
-
Yes i did, we even had a small discussion about the name of the file here in the topic ;)
-
Yes i did, we even had a small discussion about the name of the file here in the topic ;)
The link I posted was a request for something other than the dump you created and discussed.
-
ah sorry, didn't see that 1 your pointing at as a request as it seems to be more of an idea that that might be needed.
I also replied on that with the question if i should wait for the outcome of this file or should start uploading the other.
Anyways looking at https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71 i have a little question.
4. When the computer restarts wait for the problem to occur.
Does this mean the "problem" of the regkey just created, or a problem with avast that should occur to be logged ?
Normally i don't have a noticeable "problem" during boot, the only noticeable thing is that internet is not working while i can ping other pc's in the network,
including the server which hands out the internet
At this moment the firewall module is NOT installed because if it is it can't go on the internet ;)
Does this affect the chance of problem discovery ?
-

If you remove the problem, then I guess finding out what causes the problem isn't possible.
Wait for someone from Avast to give you further instructions.
-
I understand, but the annoying thing is that if i do install the firewall again i then yet again have to go trough the process of removing the installation completely to install again without the firewall, because using the change button in add/remove programs uninstaller will force it to go online for changes which isn't possible with that firewall installed and my guess is with each time i uninstall/install i just get more and more registry left overs and what not, there's the special uninstall tool for a reason, and i feel like that doesn't even remove everything (still had sandbox directories all over my hd's)
I kind of want to be done with this already, this really is not what i expected by buying software, not to mention anti virus/firewall.
Guess i'll stick to free stuff myself other then the occasional game i'd buy.

I'm sorry I've been off the forum a few days due to an emergency. I had already PM'd Igor, but got no response. I'm now going to PM Lukor for assistance. In the meantime, follow the instructions above to get a full dump file and name it uniquely (giving us the name in the thread). I sincerely thank you for your patience.
-
Sadly atm i don't have acces to his pc, hoping to get a chance tomorrow...
Also hoping those 2 you mentioned Igor and Lukor will actually respond sometime....
-
Hi Tekkie, Is this fixed yet. We are seeing same issues with firewall after updates. Thinking the firewall component just too buggy and (not optimised- slows everything down). Just run aswclear, reinstall without firewall component. Wait for avast to fix it up. :-\
-
I notified Avast again. Thank you for your patience. And you have been very patient!
-
Yes sure patience :P
I wasn't near any pc for a bit, so i have not uploaded that new file either yet.
Tho i must admitt it sure looks like they haven't done anything with that first file i send.
As there is no response about that yet.
Will upload the other when i get a chance, will need some time for it on my dads pc, because of the whole install/uninstall story.
My dad himself is pretty annoyed by now i might add....
-
Not sure, if this might help in your case, but there's a FW patch available... ;)
-> http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/patches/#fw20120725
-
Cool will try that when i get a chance :)
-
it's about 1 year later now and i had to reinstall my dads pc and now again or actually still the firewall module just blocks all his internet, we payed for a year and he couldn't even use his firewall.
We are verry near needing a new payment, but to be honest seeing that this problem obviously still was not even resolved....
I really do like avast, don't get me wrong, i use it on my pc to and there it works perfect, nothing to complain.
But on my dads pc it still blocks the net this makes me think of swapping myself to to another brand.
So if anyone can point me to a permanent solution, and please no stuff like dumpfiles here and there, becaus it never is beeing looked at anyways and it's a fresh win xp 32 bit install.
No other firewalls or other virusscanners what so ever.
I'm sorry i am coming of a bit strong, but well it's been nearly a year.
-
thnx for the actual help, i'm moving on to free avast and a free firewall.....

Windows 7 has a built in firewall.
