Title: !! NEW !! - Avast Pre-Release Version 6.0.1086
Post by: Vlk on April 16, 2011, 08:50:21 PM
The update has now been officially released as version 6.0.1091.
See here for details: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=76488
Thanks to everyone who helped testing.

Hi everyone,

here I am again. (I know, I know, it's been a while... :))

We will soon be releasing a new program update of avast; and as usual, we're making it available for public testing a few days before the official release.
Edit: now updated to build 6.0.1086.

This is hopefully going to be a smooth service release, designed to fix some of the issues of the original v6.0.1000 build.

Here's the list of the most important changes:
- solved an incompatibility with ZoneAlarm (WinXP)
- improved installation of the WebRep plugins (especially Firefox)
- solved a crash condition in the avast sandbox
- setup programs now smaller by ~20%
- Community features and the Welcome screen can now be turned on/off directly from program settings
- solved an incompatibility with Outpost firewall
- solved a bug related to the AutoSandbox offer (WinXP)
- gadget can now be removed by simply closing it
- new setup icons

New in v6.0.1027:
- attempt to fix new compatibility problems with GameGuard and sXe _rootkits_
- SafeZone improvements
- localization updates (including WebRep)
- improved sandbox logging)
- SafeZone is now a standalone setup package (can be installed/uninstalled separately)

New in v6.0.1035:
- solved Firefox WebRep plugin on non-English Windows
- solved a few incompatibility problems in BehavShield (e.g. TeraCopy)
- improvements in password processing
- improvements in the program uninstaller
- sandbox improvements
- fixed various UI issues introduced in the previous pre-release build

New in v6.0.1044:
- solved a memory leak in the avast gadget
- solved a few things in WebRep
- autosandbox-related fixes
- WinXP: File System Shield not doing repetitive scans anymore
- improvements in SafeZone isolation
- improvements in the avast! sandbox (better TDL shielding etc)
- localization updates

And new in v6.0.1086:
- more fixes in the AutoSandbox processing
- added Chrome WebRep plugin
- optimizations in the File System Shield's transient cache
- various stability/compatibility improvements

Download links:
snip
You can either install from scratch, or over an existing installation of avast (any version). Users of the previous pre-release builds (6.0.1021, 6.0.1027, 6.0.1035, 6.0.1044) can also use the built-in program updater.

Thanks
Vlk

Did you resolve the problem with Windows Media Player that becomes red ? Because it comes from AVAST 6, when I uninstalled AVAST 6, Windows Media Player went to its normal colour.
And I had a problem with the search function of windows explorer : when I opened the search page, it staid blank.
I noticed another problem that was with all AVAST : it makes YouTube slow. The video "buffering" is slow and when the video is playing, it stops 5 - 10 seconds later. With KASPERSKY, the videos play perfectly. I am sure of that because I have a high connection 10 mb since november 2008 so I can watch youtube videos since this date ... and I already had AVAST and since november 2008, so since I can watch youtube videos there are problems when playing Youtube videos. And there are no problems with KASPERSKY now.
To be honnest, because of all these problems I uninstalled AVAST and I installed KASPERSKY but KASPERSKY is too heavy for my computer. So if all the problems with AVAST 6 could be resolved, it would be great. I didn't buy any licence for KASPERSKY yet, there are 27 days remaining before the free version stops, so it would be great if the problems could be resolved :)
I wanted to install AVAST 5 again, but I don't have the installer anymore and there will be certainly no infections updates anymore very soon.
Thank you very much in anticipation :)

configuration : windows XP 2002 version SP3 - 2.17 GHz - 1.00 Gb RAM.

yeah not much to say except that webrep (for those interested) runs fine in Chrome. Nice thing in Chrome is that you can disable add-ons on the fly ;D .

Hi there!

Updateted from GUI. (6.0.1044)
I had only one small bug with this early release. WebRep modul vs. Google search bug. (I mean green icon; refresh)

Now, working well.

Bye and really thanks this release!
Cool! ;)

oups minor issue with WebRep in Chrome (dev 12.0.733.0). Thought it was just the first launch but that happens again: WebRep remains inactive (grey) when first web page displayed in Chrome at startup; reloading the page (or launching any new page) activates WebRep. Then webrep keeps working for the whole session. As said that's reproducible.

So far for my system no problem at all.
Will do some more intensive tests tomorrow, but I really do not expect any bad things. On the first glance the snags I had are all solved in .1086  :) :-* ;)

as to the bug I reported here about webrep in Chrome:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=76349.msg631966#msg631966

...sounds like Chrome "stable" is not affected. Could also be one of my extensions conflicting... I'll troubleshoot that later.

... yeah it's not my extensions, I disabled what could have conflicted, and I still get the same behavior with WebRep in Chrome dev... so this must be a -minor- issue with this build.

Updated from 6.0.1044 to 6.0.1086 via AvastUI.  Ran a Quick Scan.  Everything seems fine.  WebRep now doesn't have to be refreshed to show ratings on a Google search results page.  On 6.0.1044, I often had to hit reload in Firefox.

Congrats to Avast on update.

Well, I don't have AVAST anymore (I wait that the problems be resolved), but someone posted a screenshot here, because many users have the problems :

(http://img293.imagevenue.com/loc104/th_299153193_wmp11withavast6_122_104lo.jpg) (http://img293.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=299153193_wmp11withavast6_122_104lo.jpg)

And I don't know if it is possible, but if you could optimize AVAST to make Youtube work better ... As I wrote, since a few days, since I have KASPERSKY (the trial version) Youtube works much better, the video buffering goes faster and the videos don't stop during they are playing. But since I can watch videos on youtube (since november 2008) I had problems when playing videos on Youtube, the videos often stopped for buffering .... and I had AVAST since 2007. So I think there is something in AVAST that makes youtube (and dailymotion) slow.

And it would be great to resolve the problem with Windows Media Player becoming red :) If you read the threads the users post here, many users have the problem and think that the AVAST staff doesn't work on it :(

Thank you very much :)

+1 What he said!

Time for Avast itself to load was 36 seconds (It has been taking up to 126 seconds to load).  Hopefully this will remain fast.

To be updated on 6.0.1086 avast cent from GUI? Or can only be to download the installer package to start 6.0.1086 and then choose the upgrade? It would be important in order to improve the ZoneAlarm always treasure because it freezes the whole system sb.bin

There's a little thing in the Free version, I wanted to post that on the last pre, but I somehow forgot.

The "Avast News Service" on the bottom of Summary / current Status page seems to be somewhat outdated. It is still announcing WebRep for the upcoming version 6...  ;D

Can't you feed it with some other news that are really new?

And yes: I know it's not a bug in the program. But if you have something like a "news-feed" it should at least not show something that isn't new anymore - in this case it's even history.  8)

The Windows Media Player folder in Program Files should contain all of the files for WMP11. If it doesn't, that's probably why you're having problems.

As to the false positives, Avast has always been one of the leaders in having the least. It has beaten Avira in that regard in every report I have seen. That report you linked is strange because I've never heard or seen any testing organization criticize Avast! for having FP's.

Theres a glitch in the german WebRep rating pop-up.
Seems the dedicated area is too small, so something is either cut off at the top or at the bottom (the contents moves up and down in the window when you run the mouse vertically over the pop up).

This is due to the translation of the last point "WAREZ / ILLEGALE INHALTE" - change it to "WAREZ / ILLEGALES" pls. and all's well.  ;D

You can't update from 6.0.1000 from the GUI. 6.0.1000 is a release version and only allows you to upgrade to another release version. 6.0.1086 is a pre-release version, or in other words, a beta. 6.0.1000 is the latest release version available. To get 6.0.1086, you will have to download the installer and then just run it over the top of 6.0.1000. That should work fine.

YOU CAN NOT UPDATE FROM 6.0.1000 VIA GUI!

I already said that...
Excuse me just badly translated by google. You can download the first linked post 6.0.1086 and when I run the free update elected?
6.0.1000, is currently installed.

I am sorry ... I wrote it in a previous post ...
I use Windows XP SP3 - 2.17 GHz - 1 Gb RAM.
XP Home or Pro. ???

It also depends on your Windows customization and Windows Media Player version.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/desktop/halflife2.mspx
Sorry again, I have windows XP home SP3 ... and Windows Media Player 11, with the normal skin, I never changed it (I don't find the folder where it has been downloaded !!! - the folder "windows media player" has only an older version of WMP from 2004  ???

You should work too on the problems with false positives ... Av-comparatives doesn't put AVAST in the best antiviruses because of that : http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_od_feb2011.pdf

Thank you,

About Windows Media Player 11 becoming red, I am not the only AVAST user who has the problem, if you read the threads posted here you will find many posts about that problem.

About FP's, I linked the most recent test made by av-comparatives last february but with AVAST 5. Maybe AVAST 6 will have better results.

edit : maybe if I go back to the latest AVAST 5 version before AVAST 6 it would better. I had no problems with AVAST 5 (except False Positives sometimes). But will the "infections updates" be available for a long time for AVAST 5 ?

Did you do a Custom Install or regular install and not elect to install the P2P shield.  Custom install should have worked for you, then it lets you confirm what you are installing prior to the install.  If not, it may be a bug.

Theres a glitch in the german WebRep rating pop-up.
Seems the dedicated area is too small, so something is either cut off at the top or at the bottom (the contents moves up and down in the window when you run the mouse vertically over the pop up).

This is due to the translation of the last point "WAREZ / ILLEGALE INHALTE" - change it to "WAREZ / ILLEGALES" pls. and all's well.  ;D

yeah okay Asyn, I use Vlc too, but if someone prefers to use WMP, which btw has been the case for me a long time until I switched, that's his damned right. Using another program to get rid of an issue with the one you use is no solution.

Yes, as Logos wrote, using VLC doesn't resolve the problem. I have almost 100 Gb of Music in my Windows Media Player library and I know WMP11 perfectly. I don't want to use another player.
I must add too that it affects some videos playings too with WMP11, not all videos playings, but some of them : the videos pause very often .... exactly the same problem I have on YOUTUBE with all AVAST versions :(

I installed again the latest build of AVAST 5, WMP11 works perfectly with AVAST 5. I hope that the VPS updates will be available for a long time for AVAST 5, most of the programs stop the updates for the previous versions when they launch a new version.

For some it might be a solution, for some not.
But you're right, that it should be solved for WMP users.

But when you will launch a version 7 ... there will be maybe some problems  :(

It gives you the time to find a solution for the problem with WMP11 becoming red with AVAST 6 and with the problems with some videos playings with WMP11 (and with Youtube & Dailymotion, but about Youtube and Dailymotion the problem is with all AVAST versions :().

I think the welcome screen, is the "Protected by avast" message on boot (Win 7)
This is in the "Basic" page of the settings

The Community features are the like button and the twitter button in alerts. These are changable in the "Community" page of the settings.

Yes, that's pretty nice and what's more some kind of splash screen would be really nice after you logged in Windows. Just like NOD does, for example. :)

Well I think we have already discussed why "avast! Scan" is needed.
But if someone has forgot then I will request to watch the screen capture.
Sometimes its necessary for us to keep long file names and avast makes context menu long enough...

I couldn't add a new comment this topic. I'm not sure, but might be this is a closed topic. I don't know.

But I adviced a splash screen or welcome screen while you are logging to Windows. Not under the boot process. After the boot process. I don't really see(watch) the a boot screen and the flashing Windows logo, but this message useful as well. In addition a Welcome splash screen would be more useful; modern; cool; etc. :)

I installed via a fresh download and selected custom on a XP SP3 too-old computer. Avast only installed the components I selected. I unselected P2P and it was not installed as per my choice.

I think support for the Windows 7 taskbar would be great. Several programs already do this such as CCleaner,WMP and NIS. For those who may not know what I am talking about lets look at CCleaner. If you have it pinned to your taskbar you can access its main functions by simply right clicking on the icon. With NIS you can also do this. Even FF 4 has Windows 7 taskbar support now. Just a cool little feature so Avast user can update, quick scan, full scan or view setting with out even opening the main GUI.

LOL..............CounterSpy. I haven't used that program in about 8 years. Its old and outdated. Its honestly not needed and MBAM,SAS and HMP can detect more then CounterSpy all day long. Since CounterSpy runs in real time you have what is called overlapping security. You don't need CounterSpy.

Just saw this new release so un-installed CIS, rebooted, installed Avast from scratch (did not install Web Rep or Gadget), rebooted and the Web Shield problem blocking HTTP is still there making it useless for web browsing?!? I just don't understand what the problem is here, so once again I'm having to uninstall Avast and go back to another AV program.

I've tried CIS and MS Security Essentials with Win7 Firewall enabled and there is no blocking of HTTP, only when I install Avast does this happen? I've ran Malwarebytes just to be sure no unwanted stuff has crept it but it's clean so at a loss to the problem. The only thing I can do is wait for the final release when available and try that and 'hope' this problem goes away!

Updated via GUI just fine.  No apparent overload Avast servers that are handling the GUI update  :)

----------------
Regarding Avast 6.x, WMP11 XP color problem.

With all due respect to those still using XP, franking it is an outdated operating system regardless of which SP version you are on.

In fact when you have the SP3 release installed you have so many fixes from the original release of XP that by laws of programing you are almost guaranteed to run into problems especially when using the the latest releases of Security software.

Now some may have no problems and that is great luck.  Good for them

My recommendation to all Windows OS users except for application testers is to upgrade to W7 SP1.

Windows does have a WMP12 but it will not run on XP, unless there is a hacked version of WMP12 out there that will.

The majority of computer users will save themselves a lot of computer related grief by installing W7 SP1.

The added cost will more than pay for itself in the time and headaches saved by continuing to use XP whose kernal is now about a decade old.

The added cost will more than pay for itself in the time and headaches saved by continuing to use XP whose kernal is now about a decade old.

I agree. XP is still very good but if your using it then you need to take the issues which come with it. My company has been swapping over every pc to Windows 7. One gentleman's laptop was always getting a BSOD no matter what we did or drivers we installed. So I wiped out the drive and installed Windows 7....................That was over 4 months ago and not one issue since. Previously the drive was formatted and XP Pro reinstalled and still had BSOd's.

1.  Close IE9 x64
2.  In the Avast GUI in "Additional Protection" go to WebRep and install it for IE9.
3.  Open IE x64
4.  Go to "Safety"---"Tracking Protection"---"Toolbars and Extension"---Find "Avast WebRep"---If it says "Unenabled" Highlight it----Go to the lower right of the popup and click on "Enable"
5.  Closed IE9 x64
6.  Reopen it
7.  Open a website and Webrep should show.

My computer is old, my internal hard drive is not big, I can't put any versions after XP. And I don't want to remove all the Music, pictures, files I have on it.
So if the AVAST staff can't resolve the windows XP / Windows Media Player 11 issues with AVAST 6, I will keep AVAST 5.1.889 until the VPS updates will be not available anymore for AVAST 5, then I will change the antivirus. Most of the antiviruses are Windows XP friendly. That will be not a disaster for me !

Anyway there is a thread about the WMP 11 issues, and some AVAST members think it can come from the Sandbox.

Does anybody know if there is a specific shield responsible?
Or is it red because it's auto-sandboxed? (silly idea, but who knows...)
Maybe disable all shields and then turn on one by one, starting and stopping WMP each time another shield is up and check?

only reason I suggested to try deactivating the script shield is because it does interfere with WMP activity... but okay so does the file shield ;D ... but the fs scans everything, while the script shield... okay, you got the idea.

edit: yeah, could be the sandbox frame... appearing particularly "thick"... did the OP check sandboxed processes?

As to the false positives, Avast has always been one of the leaders in having the least. It has beaten Avira in that regard in every report I have seen. That report you linked is strange because I've never heard or seen any testing organization criticize Avast! for having FP's.

Avast didn't do so well in the FP area in the latest AV Comparatives report. Although they did use 5.1.

Updated from Pro to AIS to check out that version.  Still need to do a complete uninstall and reconfiguration from scratch. Shouldn't be necessary.  About time for Avast! to invest in 1) a smarter installer, so versions can be installed over each other when someone does an upgrade. (or even downgrade). 2) A way to save and restore a configuration, even if separate for each version.

??? you can't upgrade from pro to ais without uninstalling and re-installing? ...didn't know that... must be more than a matter of adding features involved... I guess they prevented that for piracy concerns... just a guess

When you try to upgrade from Pro to AIS in 1086, there is no way to do it.  You have two choices from the installer if you already have Pro installed-Add more Pro features or uninstall.  The firewall is not listed as an option.  I had Pro installed with an AIS license to start.  Tried it twice with same result.  In the past there have also been problems installing AIS without the firewall, and trying to add it later.  I have previously posted a whole litany of problems with this type of reconfiguration-may work once, but not regularly.

I fully support this statement above!

Otherwise I checked through every function so far and I did find: -nothing to report-
That is the smoothest running "avast!free" ever seen with superb features which you will not find on most paid AV's.
Unbelievable but true!

Right, should be 1086.  Don't know why it is different in this version, but did try twice to do an update instead of a reinstall  from 1086 Pro installed with AIS license to 1086 AIS with firewall.  No such option from installer; just "change" or "uninstall".

Just two off topic things.

I've been using XP since 2005 and have NEVER seen a blue screen.

Whether the alternative media players are better than WMP when you have all the necessary codecs installed is highly debatable. You can make music sound better with WMP than with any other one I have tried. I have MPC installed but I really only use it when I want to see more information about the file being played, like framerates, bit rates, codecs used, etc. It certainly doesn't play anything any better than WMP 10 or 11 do and the difference in sound quality is very evident.

The color issue is puzzling and as far as I've seen only affects XP Home. I haven't seen a report of the problem by those using XP Pro.

I politely disagree. I have installed all three anti virus programs using the default Win7 Firewall enabled and only Avast stops me from accessing web sites! I can uninstall Avast, reboot and install CIS AV or MSE and be able to browse the web. I uninstall either of those, reboot and reinstall Avast and web browsing is blocked. It's the Web Shield part of Avast that is the problem, I turn that off and all is OK, turn it back on and it blocks web browsing again.

I don't post these reports for fun, I'm trying to find out why Avast has suddenly developed this problem for me and by showing other AV products do not cause this problem, it all points to something incompatible with Avast, but I can't find out what. To see if it's my existing setup (Cable Modem with integrated router) I'm going to install my ADSL modem/router and try via ADSL and see if that causes the same problem, then I can at least be sure it's not my Cable/ADSL gear!!

As a past user of CIS, I know that it installs parts of the suite that are not used by the installation options you choose. If you choose just the Firewall, you still get all the elements of the AV but they are not activated. If you choose just the AV, the opposite occurs. I would suggest using the CIS removal tool and maybe even manually searching through your registry and deleting all mentions of Comodo. Uninstalling Comodo very often leaves things behind that may cause problems. There also is a removal tool available for MSE which integrates itself very deeply into the system.

LOL I do everything with my machines. I'm on it for 12 hours a day very frequently. I play games, download with P2P clients, use messenger programs, occasionally visit social sites, edit and convert videos and pictures, and keep everything up to date, just about everything that can be done. I have never had a problem with a driver update either except for rolling back to the older one a few times for performance reasons. I've never had a problem with ANY Windows update either dating back to 1999. I guess I'm just lucky that way.  ;D  XP has been rock solid for me.

Microsoft seems to have regurgitated them back to their original owners again in my system too, although Opera took several minutes to come back.  Some kind of a refresh bug.  But signing is important enough to get it fixed ASAP. Or maybe Microsoft is just "sampling" lots of software to see if they want to buy.  ???

I've been using XP since 2005 and have NEVER seen a blue screen.

did Redmond provide you with a special version ??? ;D

... jesus, do you just realize what you're saying here, not a bsod on XP in 6 years ::) ... I guess you kept using Win9x until 2005... also because it was so stable ??? :) ... don't get me wrong, I know that XP was a hell of a lot more stable than Win9x, but no bsod in 6 years on XP... heard a few fairy tales but that one... okay :-X

Guys, context is always important. Having asked to be tested with the heuristic detection set to "high" rather than "normal"(default), avast! scored 19 FPs, 15 being the cut-off score for 'Advanced++' rating.

Why not cross check it like this (screenshot)....?  :D

For my last mention of this, when I first started using XP, it was already into SP2 and that is what came preinstalled on the machine I bought to replace my old 98SE machine. I had no experience with XP in it's earlier versions. The only reason I bought the new machine was that I wanted to start playing World of Warcraft and the older box's motherboard could not accept the video card I needed to be able to play the game.

FF is not supported yet, afaik.
But ScriptShield also scan scripts on your machine, unrelated to browsers.

working fine here only thing I can never see is web rep in ie9
IE9 what browser you use ?if it were 64 bit but may not work on 32 bit works fine.

Thats what I tried but it doesn't show on IE9, 32 bit here.
But thank you in any case

So which is it?

1. Does it work or not work for you on IE9 x32?

2. Does it work or not work for you on IE9 x64?

Staff one week ago I had some problems with the latest build (6.0.1044):

Apparently the behavioral shield wasn't working!
The shield Script only works in IE9 32Bits?

Someone is with some kind of problems?

Virtualization of Avast! at the same level of Sandboxie?
There is some kind of difference in protection on 64 bit systems compared with 32 bit?

I am grateful to those who respond.  ;D

A 32 bit sandbox will always work better then a 64 bit sandbox no matter what due to patch guard.

I confirm the issue about Windows Media Player on XP.
It became red and customizing colors (and other parameters) don't work any more.
I can add that uninstalling and rolling back to Media Player 9 the issue is NOT present.

Now, let me make it clear:
1. AVAST should NOT screw the Media Player, it is not "normal" either acceptable.
2. I am not going to replace hardware and OS because of AVAST, no matter if they are "obsolete".
3. I am not going to use another media player because of AVAST, no matter how cool.
4. so please do not say anything along the line of #1 #2 and #3 because that translates automatically in "use another antivirus".

I expect the issue with Media Player to be fixed or reported as "known issue" of AVAST.

avast! is not intentionally "screwing" with Media Player in any way, no matter whether acceptable or not.
There's probably some conflict/bug somewhere... but we were unable to simulate it on our machines so far, so it's kinda hard to do anything about it at the moment.
(But, the QA guys are trying to simulate it.)

"avast! is not intentionally "screwing" with Media Player"

I bet. You must be insane to "intentionally screw" stuff.

"There's probably some conflict/bug somewhere"

I bet again. It is a progress, so far I have been reading it was my fault. :)

"but we were unable to simulate it on our machines so far, so it's kinda hard to do anything about it at the moment"

Well this is a bit worrying, don't you think?
Fortunately we aren't speaking of a critical issue...

Why is it worrying?
If it is not reproducable, it isn't. There are users that report this thing - I haven't counted them, but can't be much more than - highly exaggerated - 25.
Not many from out 125.000.000 overall Avast users.
So it is not a general Avast problem, but a specific one to a few PC and their configuration.

Title: Re: !! NEW !! - Avast Pre-Release Version 6.0.1086
Post by: igor on April 18, 2011, 08:43:02 PM
Well, what can I say... I can imagine much more worrying things, but yes, it's very strange - and it's not completely clear what else might be affected (because it's not clear why should this be happening in the first place). That's why the QA guys are trying to get some common factor, if there's any... why it happens there, but not on their machines with the same configuration.
Title: Re: !! NEW !! - Avast Pre-Release Version 6.0.1086
Post by: igor on April 18, 2011, 08:45:21 PM
Your counts are (very) wrong. Those millions of users don't come to this forum to report - most of them probably don't even start Media Player, so they don't know. It's a few thousands of (kinda active) people on the forum, let's say.
Guessing from past issues - 25 users on the forum... is quite a big number.

(But - the more strange it is that we cannot reproduce the behavior... there must be something else missing, some other software running on the machine, or some specific setting... something.)

@Igor
Yes, I am still using AVAST because (apparently) it is not major.
But like you have guessed, the fact that it is UNKNOWN, considering that Windows Media Player is a common component of Windows and how critical any antivirus is, is a bit worrying in my opinion.

@Zyndstoff
"Why is it worrying? If it is not reproducable, it isn't."
You should say "until AVAST team cannot reproduce it, it is unlikely they could fix it".
A different story. Saying "it is not reproducible" like saying the issue does not exist is the last thing you can say to somebody who is seeing the "not reproducible event" in front of him.
