Title: anti spyware
Post by: chargers on August 31, 2008, 06:08:55 AM
can you run both spybot and spyware blaster side by side?

SpywareBlaster does not run it just sets some CLSID ActiveX settings that prevent known malware sites from doing their nasty stuff.

Spybot S&D runs just fine with it and it adds a few more CLSIDs if you do the Immunize.

This tool protects you by adding the URLs of risky sites to your browser's Restricted Zone, preventing malware from installing. The program doesn't scan or work in the background,
its known as passive protection-spyware blaster is not real time :)

Spywareblaster is passive. It uses no resources

would anybody recommend spyware terminator over spybot?

I would choose ST over SB.

My preference is avast! for AS & AV with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for on-demand. 8)

Yes, avast! 4.8 is both a real-time antivirus & a real-time antispyware all in a single scanning engine. 8)

I don't have Vista so I don't know if it works with Vista, but it shouldn't hurt anything if you shut off VRDB.

Opera on my computers always use less RAM than FF or IE.

I suggest you check with Opera forums for help.

Are you using the newest version of Opera, 9.52 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_opera/4546/)?

BitDefender (on-demand av scanner) and SAS(more spyware based), A2 Free (more trojan based) are good protection, if more is needed ST with free RP 8)

BitDefender (on-demand av scanner)
For me, too many services running in background just for a non-resident scanner...

Avast! and Windows Defender are fully compatible ;)

Let's try and pull this together
WE have "real time"
and WE have "on demand

Our primary defense is AVAST in Real time for AV

For Real Time Anti spyware FREE there are only a few choices
Spyware Terminator (without AV or Toolbar)
Windows Defender
Spyware Doctor via Google Pack- without all the other garbage
Spybot t-timer
YOU can have only ONE of the above anti spyware real time installed

Now for AV on demand scanners there are many good ones- just do not INSTALL another AV along with AVST

For Anti Trojan emphasis
A-Squared

For Anti Spyware emphasis
Spybot search and destroy
Malware Bytes Anti Malware
SuperAntiSpyware

have as many as you want

Spywareblaster is in a class by itself

I would not rely on Spyware Terminator as my primary scanner but a fine choice for resident protection
SPyware Terminator scanner better than Spybot?  depends, sometimes yes, sometimes no
do you know what you are going to get next?
(Hint MBAM forum recommends Spybot as alternate scanner)

watch for false positives with ALL PROGRAMS

No problems running both avast and windows defender at the same time.
