RPC error

Today when I booted my Windows XP SP3 computer, the Avast! icon in the system tray had a red X.  I checked the registration information and the software had expired.  I tried to re-register and the following message was displayed:

AAVM subsystem detected RPC error

The program number is 7.0.1474.  What should I do?

- OS..?? (32/64 Bit..? - which SP..?)
- Other security related software installed..??

Free Avast!  I am using Windows XP Pro SP3 32 Bit.  SuperAnitSpyware is installed but does not run in background.

1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

I uninstalled and re-installed Avast! and rebooted.  The program icon is in the system tray.  When I try to register the following message is displayed:

Retrieving information please wait.

After the message disappears nothing changes.  How do I register?
