HELP upgraded now no firewall and error on virus update- no fix now

ok i had free avast and upgraded to paid internet security - downloaded and entered the licence as instructed now the firewall wont do a thing and there is no start stop etc button and the virus definitions update gets to the end then says error must terminate and closes- so i thought i would click the fix now button on the summary page and it does nothing- ive looked for the past week for answers and im not great at computers so cant do that delete file etc so whats goin on and what do i do? its a waste of money if it dont work!

try avast repair and reboot

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If the avast repair doesn't work - I would suggest a clean install of AIS:
- Download the latest version of avast AIS, 6.0.1289 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

• 1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
• 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
• 3. install the latest version, reboot.
