Was avast! for Linux dropped?
« on: March 08, 2013, 10:19:55 PM »
Seems it's not being supported anymore: www.avast.com/download-software#tab1
Is it correct?

In my honest opinion it was not. I think site just needs updating.

OR maybe since we have excellent install tutorials and we are smarter then the average bears we do not need a fancy download page and we do not need to be told to click "Next", "Next", "Next", "Next", "Finish", "Reboot Now" ;D

Why would they drop the Linux support?

Both .deb and .rpm file are still available if You want them.

I don't understand why would You think that? There was no "We are dropping Linux" announcement.

Regards.

Hi Tech, and AndrzejL.

I know you get edgy Tech about the Alwil Company never giving much feedback, I hope you don't mind me saying so. We all do a bit.  ;)

It's pretty obvious the Avast! for Linux Home editition isn't the "Flagship" of the Company, to say the least.  ;D

Plus with 'Avast! 8' out in the market it takes the spotlight.

*I looked up an old Bookmark for Avast/Linux-Home Ed. and I get to the Windows version 8 of Avast!, so yeah we certainly aren't being supported by Alwil. However just a simple matter of changing the site,...

However Avast! for Linux is still happening, as AndrzejL has kindly pointed out.

I'd especially like to welcome  AndrzejL to this Forum, he's helped me out when it mattered on occassion with my transition to PCLinuxOS, even though he's moved on to another flavour of Linux, he's always happy to help genuine Linux users.

Don't you worry folks; contrary to rumor, although Avast! for Linux may seem unsupported, as long as we keep using it I believe Alwill will keep providing it.

I wouldn't hold my breath for an "update", but sheesh stranger things have happened, and at least it IS available: Please see AndrzejL's post for active links. .  ;)

When you run it for the first time it offers a window with a link (to the same registration page of the PC free version). Well, at least it was this way until version 7 (for Windows).

Maybe Tech would like to rename this Thread with emphasis, that in fact:
We are preparing new version.
Milos:

The feeling to users that Avast! is no longer 'Available', may be put to rest, and put into a realistic perspective!
1.) Avast! for Linux IS AVAILABLE.
2.) Avast! for Linux is under Development.

Be great if the Download page for Avast! for Linux could be fixed on the site too. There is definitely a demand for this product !

Newbie to this forum. However, I have been using Ubuntu since 2005 or thereabouts. I do not know when I started using avast for debian,  but I know it was well before this danged unity interface. Ever since the unity interface was rolled out, Avast has not worked for me. At first it was easy to find on the Awil web site. But as the above discussion indicates... it is difficult to find.
I downloaded the avast4workstation 64 bit amd debian version. Double clicked on it and the Installer program opened. I clicked install and a dialog popped up saying the file was not up to debian installer standards. Something about an indicator for the length of the file. (Should have written it down). I overroad it and installed it.
When I ran it, I immediatly updated the virus definitions. That was successful (?) but as soon as I tried to run a scan, I got a file error, which now pops up whenever I start the program. Halts.... crashes.
I did a thorough uninstall / reinstall. SOS.  I give up
I will run Clam AV... even though the statistics say that it is among the worst.
Any comments are welcome (except flaming  ;-)  )

Very interesting.

Will there be a beta to test? I'll be replacing a linux OS in a few weeks, so now would be a good time to 'play'.

Well... I don't think we're that close of a beta...
