I need to do an update for MalwareBytes. It says to turn off your firewall (mine is Windows) and to disable any anti-virus software (I only have avast free, though I also have Spybots as an additional malware program).
Should I turn off the Windows Firewall?
Should I disable avast free anti-virus?
What about Spybot?
And will it be easy to turn off/disable these? Will it be easy to turn them back on?

The short answer is no.. Malwarebytes installs with Avast running
If you have spybot then I would sugggest you remove it

Ok, so you say it's ok to leave avast running when I update Malwarebytes.

Just this week I upgraded MBAM to its new version 1.62. I had Avast! and Comodo firewall on. No trouble whatsoever.
Spybot is a little behind in protection, detection, and removal of the new malware breed. Also it has not had a mayor program update in years. If you like its inmunitation, you can run SpywareBlaster is less instrusive, and if you use Spybot for its tea-timer, any good third party firewall has HIPS that is much better.

I am not a computer wiz. Might you give a brief definition of "tea timer"?
Also, what is HIPS?
And if I should want to remove Spybot, do I just use the Add/Remove Programs to do it?
And to download SpywareBlaster, a safe site to do so from?
And would it take very long to do?

Tea-Timer is the real time element of spybot S&D and it can get in the way by blocking startup items. It has in the past blocked the avast user interface on startup, this also blocks the avast tray icon.

the forums malware remover expert say you dont need it with the latest browsers
if you have avast and malwarebytes.....and sett up your router with openDNS then i think you have all you need
i would consider going for malwarebytes pro...then you get auto update and a protection module
it is a one time fee for a liftime license

HIPS is Host Intrusion Prevention Software.
To remove SpyBot S&D use add/remove.

For the average user, avast! (http://www.avast.com/en-us/index) and Malwarebytes Antimalware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/malware_lp_form) is sufficient to protect their computer and still have a computer that runs well. IMHO.
It's nice every once in a while to run Ccleaner (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner) with it's default settings to clean up any garbage picked up while browsing the net and running your programs.

Thanks to everyone for their replies.
Earlier, I had updated Malwarebytes, while leaving avast enabled and the Windows Firewall on, and had no difficulty.
I then ran Spybot. Each time I do, it comes up with something called Right Media, which I then have it delete. My point is that Malwarebytes doesn't ever catch this. Big deal??
I may delete it eventually if everyone thinks that would be wise. Not sure if and when I might replace it. I'm hoping bob3160 is right and that I don't need it for my purposes.

Spybot is famous for detecting cookies..... most of us don't worry about cookies except that we usually don't except third party cookies.
If you really want to run a scan to point out some cookies that are left on your system, then keep Spybot.
Your computer. Your choice. :)
