We're glad to announce a new major version of "avast! Free Antivirus for Mac". The current popularity of Apple products also makes them more interesting for the bad guys so we thought it would be good to prepare for the battle sooner rather than later. The new version has been almost totally reworked compared with our previous solution for the Mac OS.
We're kicking off with three shields and an on-demand scan. The Web Shield together with the Mail Shield will check the vast majority of incoming data from the Internet. avast! Free Antivirus for Mac is also equipped with a File Shield, which scans all programs stored and executed from your hard drive. Everything is packed in a brand new GUI and is now available as a public beta.
Features:
- On-demand scanning: It's possible to scan the whole file system, network volumes or a mounted removable volume. You can also run a custom scan. Scan reports are automatically archived and are accessible from the GUI at anytime.
- On-screen alerts: Alert messages are displayed on-screen whenever a threat is detected.
- File Shield: The File Shield scans the binaries of started applications and all files at the time they are modified.
- Web Shield: The Web Shield monitors and filters all HTTP traffic coming from web sites on the Internet. Connections from your web browser are redirected to the Web Shield module. The Web Shield in turn connects to the requested web server and while downloading the content, it simultaneously scans it for viruses and Trojans. Only clean data is delivered to the browser, all malware is stopped before it gets saved on your Mac.
- Mail Shield: The Mail Shield monitors and filters all POP3 and IMAP traffic coming from mail servers on the internet. It does not prevent saving of infected files (doing so could lead to irreversible data loss), it just detects them. The File Shield prevents any infected attachments from causing harm to your system.
- Automatic updates: The scanning engine is automatically updated with our regular VPS database updates.
Installation & Uninstallation:
- To use the Mail Shield, you need to disable encrypted POP3/IMAP connections in your email client's settings so the traffic can be scanned. By default, the Mail Shield encrypts all outgoing traffic itself if the mail server supports it (encrypted connections can be forced for selected mail accounts in the Mail Shield settings).
- Uninstallation must be carried out from the application's menu bar - item "Uninstall avast!"
If you have any comments of feedback, please start a new topic and/or respond to an existing one rather than bloating this particular thread.

Interesting! Now AVAST will gain more popularity than it already have and several thanks from Mac Users.

Can we please remove the sticky about the old 3.11 Release Candidate now that this new beta is out?
-
Vlk, does it use the same virus definitions than the Windows version?
Are the updates incremental? Will the technology go for the Linux versions?
Thanks and congratulations!

Tech, The VPS is the same as the windows version, always has been for the Mac verison. Check for Updates is grayed out and not yet available, and it has yet to auto update so at this point It would seem no updates at all

I know that... but as this is a new release...
Is it incremental?
And for the Linux users?
-
Tech,
I dont think its incremental yet, in fact it looks like it is still using the old v4.8 definitions :( See screenshot attached

Good point. Done.

The current beta is indeed still based on the v4.8 engine, but this will be changed before the official release. Plus, the detection rates of Mac malware is the same between avast 4/5/6 engines. The main point of the beta is to test features like the shields, which should be fully functional.
Thanks

Hallo,
VPS is the same as for the windows counterpart. And yes, VPS is updated automatically in an incremental manner (it's not clickable by the user, but performed by th engine in background in this beta).

Btw. VPS update is incremental for the Mac Avast since the 3.11 version (in 2.74 it wasn't incremental yet).

Yes, we have, but @iphone900 said that we don't detect them, so we need exactly that sample to analyze it (we don't have all files all over the world).

It's likely not very widespread. The news sites make a big deal out of every piece of Mac malware so more news coverage doesn't really mean it's widespread.

I admit the uninstall is not yet too friendly. Right now the uninstall option is only in the menu of the main GUI app.
Unfortunately that's exactly what you have moved to Trash. So the easiest way for you is to restore it from Trash (if not yet emptied) or perform install again, then run the app and choose Uninstall from its menu.

Hallo,
uninstall is available in the menubar (as written explicitly in the release notes). You can install the application again OR put the app from trashcan back to /Applications, and to the proper uninstall action.

we also translated the official press release to German language now: avast! for Mac Press Release in the German Community Forums (http://forum.avadas.de/threads/3164-AVAST-ver%F6ffentlich-neue-Mac-Antivirus-Beta)
For now we received one feedback of a user who tested it. The product is properly working, but he asked why he can't disable Web and Mail-Shield seperatly from each other?

I understand that in order for the Mail shield to work I have to deactivate SSL in my email client. In the first post it is noted that Avast automatically encrypts "outgoing" (I'm quite sure this has to read "incoming" instead, since we are talking about POP3/IMAP and not SMTP) traffic by default and that encryption can be enforced in the Mail shield settings. I have two questions concerning this statement:
1) How can I test and confirm that my incoming emails are indeed coming over an encrypted connection?
2) How can I access the Mail shield settings? I could not find any settings/preferences/... in the avast GUI.
-
Found mac defender on a poisoned search result for comedian Jen Kirkman. Was not detected by the mac beta but Avast 5 on windows found it just fine. In fairness it got past every mac anti-malware program I've thrown it against apart from Sophos and ClamAv (which sussed it on out of date definitions surprisingly) but this is THE mac malware you want to be defending against right now.

You are right, there should be of course incoming as we handle POP3/IMAP connections.
1) How can I test and confirm that my incoming emails are indeed coming over an encrypted connection?
You can do so for example using the wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org/ (http://www.wireshark.org/)) tool. During the IMAP/POP3 session you should see an unencrypted POP3/IMAP connection on your localhost interface (lo0) and an encrypted POPs/IMAPs session on the external interface.
2) How can I access the Mail shield settings? I could not find any settings/preferences/... in the avast GUI.
Currently it is not possible to configure the shields using the GUI, but you can use the configuration file
/Library/Application Support/Avast/com.avast.proxyclient.conf
to configure the network shields.

Thank you, bless you! My license for the Free version is just now over the year old mark, and I was pulling out hair because there was no Avast solution under $40. I don;t really need the rest of that stuff, just the basics... and won't trust my computer to McAfee or Norton. (Simple fact is that they suck.) Avast has deftly resolved problems that both of these (and other) "protection" softwares fell prey to. I wouldn't dream of going to another company. Hope you keep us in mind for a low-cost basic version if we can't have a home/free version in the future.
Thanks again!
-
Thank you for the Mac Beta.
The version I am running is
VPS version 110606-1
Engine version 0.0.93i
Interface version 1.0
is this the most up to date and if not where do I find updates please?
-
Hi,
We currently have a 3-seat licence of Avast for Mac. Our current release is 2.74R0.
I understand that Avast has just issued a new release, namely Avast 3.11. Still, Avast autoupdate does not seem to dowload anything else than the updated virus database.
I have therefore several pending questions:
1 - What is the latest version ? How may I download it?
2 - How should I install it? More specifically, do I need to uninstall Avast 2.74 beforehand? If so, how should I proceed?
3 - Should I keep the current licence key or should I ask for a new one? If so, how?
Looking forward to reading from you,
Thanks.

Hi,
in addition to the problem that avast! Free for Mac sometimes causes a hanging between the Apple logo at bootup and the logon screen, there is now a new user, who complains about two new issues:
1) 100% CPU usage when downloading large files
When he is downloading large files like Navigon app for he iPhone, the CPU usage goes up to 100% while downloading that file. He is using the latest build including the changes related to the filesize mentioned by VLK in the start post. When the download is finished, the CPU goes back to normal. Is this problem known?
2) Growl pop-ups during mailbox retrieval
Mailbox requests will be done every 60 seconds, when he has mail opened. During that avast! Free for Mac gives every 60 seconds a notification about mailbox retrieval. He tried to disable the notifications in the Growl settings, but only can disable them for whole avast!, not for a particular feature of avast! like mail. Is it possible to add a configuration for that?

As already many times discussed here, those popups are not "mailbox retrieval popups" but "wrong configured email client popups". If you disable SSL in your mail client's settings so the avast mail shield can chceck the incoming emails (the encryption is then done by avast!), those popups will go away. See the "mailshield problem" threads here for additional info.

This can only happen if you disable the webshield file size limit or set it unreasonably high.

Hi tumic,
This can only happen if you disable the webshield file size limit or set it unreasonably high.
thanks for your reply. I received a copy of the users proxy configuration and he had the standard limit of 4GB in there.

Hello, I just downloaded and installed avast for Mac free (beta edition). It happens that I have Parallel Desktop installed on my Mac and that in my virtual Windows environment, I have also installed avast free edition. Are both versions (PC and Mac) redundant? Should I uninstall one of them and, if yes, which one? Or, if I keep both, will it be slowing significantly my computer?
Thank you in advance for your answer!

Hi all,
no feedback from the user with the broken downloads yet. In the meantime we have translated the Silent-Update from 22.6.2011 update notes (http://forum.avadas.de/threads/3127-avast!-Free-f%C3%BCr-Mac-BETA-(Update-22.06.2011)) to German.
Thanks for your efforts so far! I hope we can fix some of the bugs reported by our users with the update.
Good work!

Hi, It's good to hear of new inroads being made. The free Avast is what I've been using since I joined the IT world for about 4years now. But my problem is that most of us in Ghana do not have credit cards or any international cards to enable us to purchase your products for effective use. How therefore can i enjoy this new product if it does not come for free downloads? I/We also need to be protected. Do something for me/us.

Hi tumic,

Hi, I just ran a full scan using your free version of Avast BETA. It did identify several infections. The problem is the "FIX" button and well as "delet" and "move" are all greyed-out and non-usable. It will allow me to use finder.
My question is should I open those in "Finder", move the file to trash, then empty the trash??? Will that cause complications with other functions of my computer?? Will I be throwing away anything my computer needs to run, or access sites on internet?
HOW can I complete the process and remove the problem viruses from my computer?
I am using MAC OSX, with browser Safari5.0
I am a layperson with only rudimentary techincal computer knowledge, so your simplest instruction would be appreciated
Thank You so much --MLO

Hi,
we have a new user with a new problem: avast! Free for Mac is blocking web access (http://forum.avadas.de/threads/3127-avast!-Free-für-Mac-BETA-(Update-22.06.2011)?p=30366&viewfull=1#post30366). We asked for the system.log proxy lines and the user replied. Can you check?

Issue with OS X Lion
Avast is blocking all traffic on the just released Lion.
In order to use Lion one must disable mail and web shield - seems to be an incompatible issue here?
-
Packet forwarding is broken on Lion. Lion either does not redirect the packets (your case) or crashes. This bugs have been reported to Apple long time before the Lion release, but it is still not fixed by Apple.
We are looking for a workaround for the case Apple will leave it broken, but currently you can only disable the web/mail shields on Lion as a "fix".
-
ok, please keep us posted and please indicate a timeframe for the fix if possible
thx

Using Lion and had Avast disabled. I am trying to install the new build but it won't let me because it says Growl is open. Even if I stop Growl I still get this message. I tried a clean boot with Growl stopped, still get it.

The current beta does not rely on Growl at all. I can see two possible reasons of your trouble (or combination of both):
(1) You are not trying to install from the latest beta, but an older one.
Please double check you are using the image you can download from this URL:
http://public.avast.com/dev/mac-beta1/avast-28264.dmg
(2) An older version of avast! was installed and you haven't uninstall it before installing the current beta. If this is the case then take a look into /Applications and check if there is avast!.app present. If yes, try to delete it. If it fails (I guess so, it shall tell you that something in the folder is in use), then follow these steps:
* Delete file /Library/LaunchAgents/com.avast.MacAvast.LaunchAgent.plist
* Reboot.
* Try to delete /Applications/avast!.app again. Now it should succeed.
(Please note that this inconvenience is fixed in the current beta so upgrades to future versions from current one should not fall into this trap anymore.)
Regards,
Mity

* Delete file /Library/LaunchAgents/com.avast.MacAvast.LaunchAgent.plist
* Reboot.
* Try to delete /Applications/avast!.app again. Now it should succeed.
I wasn't able to remove it before, once I stopped Growl and rebooted I was able to remove it and install the new beta. Seems to be working now.

The new beta rocks. Amazing work avast! team. I am sure their are technical difficulties associated with enabling Web and Mail shields at this point, but is there any hope? Also would it be possible to do a selective install in the final product, for e.g. if I do not wish to use the mail shield.
-

No, we do not have any plans about selective installation. Furthermore mail and web shields are implemented in a single component (they share a lot of code) and it's just a matter of its configuration whether each part is actually enabled or not.

But then there should be an option to ignore the status of some shields, thereby not displaying the scary Red Cross on the main UI.
Awesome job eliminating the dependency on Growl. Question here though, does Mac OS X not allow for Windows like awesome notifications?
-
Any word on a final release date? Download link on main site still has it as version 3.11
-
Any news on final release? Also there is no support for OS 10.7 (LION) on Mail Scanner and Web Shield, any idea of when an update will add support for this?

Hallo,
we'd like to fix the Lion-related issues in the very next beta-refresh (which is tested right now).

Any update on the Lion fixes?
Give it yet some time. So far it looks to be on the right way. If it goes well, the next beta refresh which solves the Lion issues could go out about the end of this week or early the next one.

The latest beta update (avast-29138.dmg) solves the web/mail shield issue on Lion.

Hi Tumic,
thanks for the upgrade, I notified the user, who was experiencing problems with it in our forum.

Once again, avast! outdoes itself. Awesome job with the latest beta. Any plans to release this through the Apple app store?
-
I think we can expect a release soon as seem none has a problem right ? Nice for my friends who got a mac i think avast! will save them. ;D

Not sure if anyone has experienced this yet or not, I am using Mac OS X 10.6.8 and every time I install this - even the latest version, I am unable to empty my trash. it reports that every file inside is "in use" as soon as i removed Avast! I was immediately able to empty my trash.

Hi,
I just registered to ask how it is possible to manually configure/parameter the avast web shield? I am developing java web applications and use a lot the Glassfish server. Webshield always block the glassfish deployment :(
Do you have any idea of how to make it work? without turning everything of...
Thanks for for help,

Just installed on my old Core Duo MacBook running 10.6.8.
1. Issue with one mail account. (SSL/TLS connection detected!...)
2. Same trash issue: "The operation can't be completed because the item ... is in use." Oddly, with only one item in the trash, a second prompt comes up indicating that the .DS_Store is in use.
Temporary fix: Hold down the Option key when emptying the trash.

1. Issue with one mail account. (SSL/TLS connection detected!...)
It's the way it's supposed to work, you need to turn off SSL in Mail. avast! is one of the very few AVs that have such an elegant implementation for SSL mail scanning.
-

What exactly does it mean "blocks the glassfish deployment"? An "infection detected" popup is shown? Or some pages do not load? What does the system log say? (grep 'proxy' /var/log/system.log)

The latest beta is so good! thanks avast! team. I WAIT for final version!! :D
Auto-update working fine and Lion performance is normally. :-*
please add a status for on-demand scanner ::)
# how to submit a suspicious file or false positive?? :)
-
Does the Mail Shield still need to be configured via text editor? I don't mind doing so (primarily a Linux user :P), but I'd like a reference for it if I do.
-
Is it coming out this year or next. Man I am excited. Avast should start selling boxed versions in more countries.
-
Some observations -
1. How do I check which beta build I have installed, the 'About avast!' dialog box just shows major version number 1.0 and not the build number.
2. Clicking the refresh button says 'Checking if a newer version of Engine or VPS is available'. Why does it not check for Program updates as well?
3. The main interface has a dialog box at the bottom that says - 'Get the latest beta version'. Does this dialog appear always or only when there is a newer version than the one you have installed?
That said, incredible product. This proves that the avast! team has an excellent engineering team. Their focus on performance remains.
Can someone please answer if this product can be made to confirm with the rules of Mac AppStore?
-
Thanks for your report.
Ad 1) Good point. We will update that.
Ad 2) Technical reasons. It still requires some work and infrastructure on our side.
Ad 3) Well, the box just shows a HTML page retrieved from a hardcoded URL. There is no logic behind the box and no logic is planned there. We are currently misusing this general communication channel in mean time until the point (2) is resolved.

Since the 07/29/2011 update, you can switch the shields ON/OFF using the controls in the avast! preferences pane. Anyway, some advanced shield configuration can still be done only by editing the configuration file.
-
Hello,
I just installed Avast and get an error stating that the Filesystem Shield cannot be detected and it is enabled in the preference pannels. How do I fix this?
-
Thanks for report. The question is if the filesystem shield really does not run, or there was some kind of error in determining its state.
It would be also helpful if you can provide more info:
* What avast! build do you use? (if it is not 35600, please try the new one).
* What MacOS X version do you have?
Can you check if a process /Library/Application Support/Avast/fileshield/com.avast.fileshield is running? You can list processes by checking Activity Monitor utility (set combo to "All processes") or by typing this command in Terminal.app

Hi, just registered in the forum and would like to seek your help after upgrading my Avast for Mac to 35600 version.
My question is: after doing a full system scan, it detected the following as attached file.
Please advise what to do? Do I need to delete them all? thanks in advance!!!

There is one thing I need. Please build a Antivirprogram that can work on low level. 5-10% CPU usage would be greate. CalmXav and Sophos are very good but they drive me crazy up to 100% CPU. But AvastBeta is not mutch better at the moment.

Does this Beta version start automatically with computer start up? It didn't appear to when I rebooted after install.
Understandably with a Beta version the user information is sparse, I was unable to find this info.
Thanks

Yes it does. But have you really installed it? The installation is done the first time you start the main application. Just copying the application bundle to Applications does not install avast!.

Great news, looking forward to testing the product.

I'm very curious as to why this product has been in Beta for so long. And why it is freely offered to the public while in Beta?
Also, everything I read online suggests that A/V for the Mac is a waste of time. Now I am a natural skeptic, and firmly believe that it is only a matter of time before market share drives the Mac to be more of a hacking target. Yet many highly reputable sources continue to state that the basic design of OSX is bullet proof. Your thoughts?
Thanks.

I would say atm it is bullet proof unless the user makes some stupid mistake (Mac Defender anyone?). If you buy applications from reliable sources, same with other content in your Mac, if you don't visit "queer" pages, if you don't open attachments of mails from unknown recipients and so on.
I'm using Mac's since early 90ties and my Mac actually caught virus once, I believe in 1996! It was called "Worm" and main symptom was that computer got slower and slower. It was very much easy to get rid of it, I got the virus from a friend whom brought me some apps on diskettes heh.
Why I even use AV at the moment? I don't know. It's for the fun of testing more than anything else I guess. And it's nice to be 100% certain I won't distribute some Win virus in job (I take my Mac into job to work on it and I move files to jobs crap Dell PCs). Without AV I'm only 99.7% sure. ;)

You don't say what popups are bothering you, so just a general hints:
avast! should not popup message too often. One exception are warnings about a condition preventing avast! from doing its work which depends on configuration of avast! and also some other applications (e.g. your mail client). Most common warning and how to avoid it is described here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=89943.0
Furthermore you can configure popup verbosity in System Preferences >> Avast >> Popups and suppress the warning altogether. Note that popup about malware detection cannot be suppressed so if avast! thinks you are infected it will continue to tell you. It's what it is supposed to do.

Mity

nahuelito,
so far the beta versions only automatically update virus database, not program. So this is (a bit uncomofrtable) way how to force beta users to update to newer one.
Follow these instructions:
- Download current program version (linked always from 1st post in this thread -- http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=78646.0; or newly also available on http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-mac/)
- Open the downloaded DMG and drag&drop avast! into /Applications
- If another version of avast! already exists there, Finder will ask you what to do. Choose "Replace".
- Start the new version of the app from /Applications. It will offer you to do update.

Hi Team,
Today i downloaded the beta version of Avast on my MacBook Air and did a full system scan and i was greeted with the following warning
/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/test/testtar.tar
/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/test/testtar.tar
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MediaKit.framework/Versions/A/Loaders/MKDrivers.bundle/Contents/Resources/bootroot.loader
My question is should i safely ignore and move or should i delete it ?
i did try to repair using the repair tool but it was not fixed

Just keep an eye on this thread, all new beta releases are posted here on the forum.

Hand in hand with every update, the first post of this thread is being updated (the download link and the change log therein).
Also I think I can already disclose the big happy news: You should need to go through the manual update only once more. That upcoming update will finally have the ability to check for the program update built-in and offer to apply it. It should go out till the end of this week. (Fingers crossed.)
EDIT: Whe are there! Check the first post of this thread and take it.

So far so good. I really like it. I uninstalled Sophos antivirus for the Mac in favor of this. I like the option to drag and drop files to avast! and have it scanned. I couldn't do that with Sophos. The GUI is excellent and it appears to be light on my system resources so far. :)

Hi guys!
The last build is terribly consuming CPU and Memory.
How can I deal with it?
Thank you
-
Hi guys, just wanted to chime in and say that I'm also seeing super high CPU usage. My fans kick on high, and when I check activity monitor I see the same thing as ZeoS: near-100% CPU usage. It's not constant, it just comes in spikes.
Today is the first day I've ever used Avast on the Mac (I've used the Windows version for years), so please let me know if I can share any information that'd help track down this annoying problem.
I'm running the latest version of Lion w/ FileVault turned on.
Preliminary debugging shows that the spikes go away when File System Shield is disabled in preferences, but it's only been about 10 minutes since I did that so I can't be sure.
-
Following up.
I left File Shield unchecked all of yesterday and never experienced the CPU spikes.
This morning I turned it back on as an experiment and the spikes started again. I've had Web Shield enabled the entire time and have never seen CPU spikes with Web Shield enabled and File Shield disabled.
From what I can tell it's definitely related to File Shield.
By the way, I've had Mail Shield disabled the entire time because I use Gmail via Sparrow, and don't have a traditional POP3 setup.
-
When running a scan in Avast, it makes Time Machine and the system as a whole run very slowly. This is on a 2008 dual quad core Mac Pro. A 10MB Time Machine backup has taken an hour so far and still not finished. Mail also keeps spinning...
A design flaw in Avast for Mac also is that the window is not resizable. There seems to be no way to see the full details of the viruses it finds because I cannot widen the window or scroll through the details.
-
while running avast beta for macs, tonight at 7:51 I had 2 files infected with JS pe-in trj Can you advise if these were stopped or is the scan I did after incorrect?
Thanks/MVP
-
Firstly, really pleased about the AVAST for MAC progress - used AVAST for a long time on Windows and want to support it on MAC.
However, the latest release causes my 3.9GHz i7 iMac to pause for a second or two every few minutes. CPU resource peaking at 50-60% at least
Followed the advice in turning off File Shield and system has returned to normal.
Fingers crossed it can be sorted soon.
Thanks again AVAST! :)

A few days ago I uninstalled Avast by using the menu bar.
Today, I installed the newest version and am still seeing frequent CPU spikes with File Shield enabled. My fans are going like crazy, and it pretty much makes Avast useless.
I checked my log, and system.log has a ton of these entries, pretty much one per minute:
Apr 18 13:45:10 [ComputerName] com.apple.launchd[1] (com.avast.regapp[35889]): Exited with code: 2
In my avastfileshield.log I have a number of these errors:
[err] Wed Apr 18 13:50:26 2012 - av_thread_proc: Req timeouted.
I also have one of these:
[err] Wed Apr 18 13:18:51 2012 - avmaster_send: send() failed. Broken pipe [32]
Anyway, gonna uninstall again. Can't have my computer constantly freaking out like this. Let me know if I can provide more information or do any debugging steps.

Is avast! for Mac final release now out there?
I've updated today, and now I've got version 7.0 (36758).
'About Avast! Antivirus' does not show the word 'beta' any more!

Welcome to the forum.
Rumor had it pegged to release by the end of this month. :)
This certainly doesn't look like a beta announcement to me.

Neither does this (http://www.avast.com/products#tab2).

My first post is to say many thanks.
I have looked for a reliable anti-virus software for mac, I now realise there are dangers out there for the mac user and I prefer to protected now than suffer later. I have tried a couple of anti-virus software, one was easy on the system/CPU, but I was not convinced of it's efficacy, the other from a well renowned corporate source, left my mac hanging ending up frozen.
So far Avast looks good to me.
Thanks again

As the thread title says, it's already released. All present beta users will get (well, probably already got) this version automatically, via our automatic updates.

Actually all users who have 36454 or later installed get the update automatically.
If you have older version, you must perform the update manually:
- Download the DMG from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-mac, and drag&drop the app. from the DMG into /Applications.
- Finder will ask what to do, choose Replace.
- Start the app.

I use the paid Avast! Internet Security for my Windows machine so I was glad to see this become available for our Mac machines. Thanks Avast team for providing a good security program for OS X, it is appreciated.

The high CPU issues are still present in the retail build.
Is there any update on those? Have the devs responded? I'd be glad to help debug it w/ logs or other diagnostics, but it doesn't seem like anyone's been paying attention (to this thread or others).

It's been reported to the Mod's. Hopefully someone will respond but probably not till after the weekend. :)

Avast Free Antivirus For Mac running OS X 10.6.8 - No Virus Chest?
Hi,
Avast Free ver. 7.0 (37028)) found an infection. Documentation which I've found on the net seems to recommend moving the infected item to something called the Virus Chest.
I cannot find any reference to a Virus Chest anywhere in the application or on my computer.
When I select the infected item in Avast, the only choices appear to be the following icons:
Repair, Delete, Move, Finder, and Export.
Choosing Move shows my documents folder selected.
Should there be a Virus Chest folder somewhere on my computer? Should I just create one? If so, where should it be?
Thanks for reading this. I hope someone can help.
cheers,
jstme

I notice that a full scan is eating all memory and my OS X Lion is getting very slow. Maybe to consider to add some automatic memory cleaning after a larger file was scanned? Manuel freeing memory speeds Mac and scan up until again all mem is eaten. All others seems to work fine, like this new scanner. This might also help to avoid the slowing down which is mentioned in another post (topic) here I guess.
