Unable to uninstall avast! 4.8
« on: October 27, 2008, 04:54:20 PM »
I've downloaded avast! 4.8, but I would like to uninstall it now due to a lot of problems with it.
But it wont uninstall. I've gone on the control panel and clicked "Uninstall" but it doesn't respond.

I don't know what to do with this now.

One of the main reasons I want to uninstall it, is because every time I open my Outlook E-mail I get a lot of error messages: "Avast: Unable to connect to Avast Engine. Avast mail protection can not be started."

Then it says something about an "ashOutXt.dll" file is deactivated.. etc etc..

So could anyone please help me?  :)

Are you actually using the avast 4 server version of avast.

The ashOutXt.dll is the avast MS Outlook plug-in, so if deactivated it will need to be activated in MS Outlook. You don't say what version of MS Outlook you are using.

Make sure the avast plug-in/add-in is not disabled in MS Outlook:
Outlook 2007 > Tools > Trust center > Add-ins > Manage Disabled items.
Outlook 2003 > Help > About > Disabled items
Outlook 2000 > Tools menu > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Add-In Manager.

Based on the other issue that you mention I have to ask - Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

So this system has 'never' had another AV installed at any time.

Did you check if the plug-in was disabled in MS Outlook as in the location in my last post ?

Yes, but I couldn't find the "ashOutXt.dll" file there.

You won't find the ashOutXt.dll file but you should find what is called the avast plug-in.

I can't be of much practical help as I don't use any version of MS Outlook.

However in any case your installation doesn't seem to have completed correctly or the uninstall function would have worked.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that doesn't work it would probably be best to do a clean reinstall.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.

2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.  If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode (as the avast self-defence module may be running), once complete reboot into normal mode.

3. install the latest version, reboot.

Boot in Safe Mode (pressing F8 while booting) and uninstall avast from there.
Also, you can use the avast uninstall tool (download the latest version) and run it in Safe Mode too.

None of the methods above worked for me to get Avast off my computer.  No matter what I did even after removing in safe mode with the Avast removal tool, whenever I went back to the regular mode of Windows Avast self protection module would still be active and Avast would still be running.  I could not reinstall.  I could not activate it with my registration code as it kept saying it was a bad code.  Finally I was able to remove the self protection module with a root kit remover and then I was finally able to uninstall Avast.  I consider Avast to be worse than most viruses and root kits loose on the internet given how insidious it has become to remove. Stay away at all costs.

Hmmm... seems you had a very bad first experience.
Just to know, as I'm using avast for 6 years and never had these uninstall troubles, do you have any other antivirus in your computer? Had in the past? Did you run your 60 days trial period?
