Avast 2014.. Install seems OK, but remains Unprotected.

OK, Here is the latest.

I can Install but something is definitely wrong.   I am rebuilding two computers one 32 bit and one 64 bit.

After installing the service packs, the first step is to install MBAM and Avast.  BOTH CLEAN COMPUTERS will install but not start services.

After running the clean uninstall program from safe mode,  the only way to get to INSTALL IS FROM SAFE MODE.   

msconfig / BOOT / Select Safe Mode.  (OR F8 if you are quick enough)

Hope they fix this soon!

avast! is not intended to be installed in Safe Mode.
Guidelines for an installation from scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. (Optional) If you want, save your avast! settings for later restoration (Settings > Maintenance > Back up).
4. Uninstall avast! from Control Panel (if possible) and reboot.
5. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1 in and follow the instructions. Reboot in Normal mode after that.
6. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Register your free copy or add the license key for the paid versions. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

Please, be patient, boot when it's said to boot...

I was having the same issue with Avast! Service and Self Protection not starting. After following the instructions twice, it would still not work. Avast! uninstall through Programs and Features also would not work.

I've found the reason, though I'm not certain which one actually caused this.

I rebooted into safe mode again and used Aswclear to uninstall Avast! I rebooted and shut off both Windows defender and MalwareBytes file protection and unchecked start on boot. Rebooted again and installed Avast! successfully.

I suspect it's MalwareBytes Pro version that was causing the conflict, but someone will have to confirm that.

Windows 7 64 bit.

I have win 7 64 with malwarebytes pro and have no issues.  You shouldnt be running Windows Defender with Avast though anyway as they are both same level protection.

My apologies for starting a new thread today on exactly the same topic.  With the same point being made by so many independent users you would think that the Avast people would come up with a patch that would eliminate the need to uninstall and reinstall (and re-register?) from safe mode.

I had the exact same problem.   This is right after a clean install of windows 64 and service pack 1.

Nothing else installed except malwarebytes first, then Avast so I would be surprised if the system was already infected.

I will try the install from safe mode and will report back if that does not work.

Avast isn't meant to be installed from Safe Mode... you'd rather wait for a fix and get it installed in normal mode.

I have win 7 64 with malwarebytes pro and have no issues.  You shouldnt be running Windows Defender with Avast though anyway as they are both same level protection.

I've installed Avast on numerous computers with Windows Defender running. I've never seen any warnings from Avast about shutting Defender off first. I've not had this problem until this version of Avast.

Windows Defender is automatically running on Windows machines for a number of years now. If this is the issue, then Avast needs to figure out how to deal with it.

Hi all

Had the same problem installing AVAST 2014 under Windows 8 (x64) on a new Toshiba Satellite i3 notebook.
Jumped through the usual hoops (ran Malwarebytes, deleted Page and Hibernate files, but as Windows 8 does not have a 'safe mode' needed another solution.

1. Ran ASWCLEAR to remove 'failed' installation of AVAST 2014
2. Rebooted
3. Installed PREVIOUS version of AVAST (124 Mb) successfully!
4. Updated to 2014 via MAINTENANCE function.
All OK!

I suspect the actual cause is one of the plethora of proggies and services that gets loaded with these propriety products.

I also have had trouble installing AVAST 2014. I did have Malwarebytes Pro (Trial) installed and in task bar. The only way I could install was in SAFE Mode.

Why can't Avast be installed in safe mode?

I will try to disable Malwarebytes then install Avast 2014 in normal mode.

Avast will have to be uninstalled in safe mode using Avast uninstall utility. It does not uninstall normally.

If it's of any comfort I uninstalled my previous version using the uninstaller exe file which on the forum's advice I had downloaded (not by using Control Panel A+RP's).  It defaulted to safe mode for the uninstall but reverted to normal for installation of the latest version.  So far this seems to have cured the "remain unprotected until you click Resolve All or upgrade" issue.

I use Malwarebytes but only the free version which may or may not leave a footprint.

This coincided with a feature in the latest Computer Active mag in which they rank Avast 2014 "as the most effective free security product in its most recent tests (www.snipca.com/10401)".  Perseverance pays???

Confirming I likewise experienced the identical situation as was reported in the first post of this thread by jollywolf:  An unsuccessful install ["You are unprotected! The avast service is off...self defense is off."] , along with a corrupted (unusable) uninstaller.

Two such installation attempts were made in Normal Mode, one with 2014 build 2006, another with build 2007 [each preceded by running AvastClear in Safe Mode].

I then "gave up", and reinstalled version 8 build 1497, with absolutely no problems at all.

For what it's worth, this was on a Win7x64 PRO SP1 system, and yes, I have MBAM PRO running in real-time, should that turn out to be a factor [MBAM did not report/log any issues].   Additional security as per my signature.

Additional Notes:   I had successfully installed/tested 2014b2006 on a different Win7x32 PRO SP1 system without MBAM; as well as on an XPx32 PRO SP3 system which I'm still using.

It happened to me too. And when I tried to start the service manually using Component Services, I got Error 1053

Previously I tried to clear uninstall Avast with the tool I've got from http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
And then after reboot, I installed Avast again. It worked for some times. But after a several days of use and several PC reboots, it happened again.
Sometimes after reboot, Avast worked again normally, and then after another reboot, it wont work.
I noticed if I reboot, Avast icon is late to show up on the notification bar compared to other programs (ex: cFosSpeed, Dropbox, XFastUSB, IPMSg, etc)

How can I get Avast to work again? Thanks for the help

I was having the same issue, and then found another forum that said to use the avastclean.exe program, which will make you go to safe mode.  run it, then reboot into safe mode again and do a clean install of the new Avast from safe mode.  I tried it, and it worked for me.

It's really a pleasure to find people who think and try before coming with untested solutions, or worse with ruin answers like the AVAST support service who after taking control of my computer just explained that all the problem was coming from my registry which was a mess (brand new W8 installation...) and should be manually fixed by engineers they could recommend for a modest €89/h fee.
Thanks again for using your brain and share your conclusions (I loved the very cautious "it worked for me", it worked for me too).
Btw ken.everett.sa, there is a safe mode in W8, not obvious to find, but definitively exists.

I had the same problem several weeks ago, and reverted back to Avast 8. Today I decided to try again (since Avast 9 has now gone through a few revisions since I last tried). I'm running Windows XP Home SP3 with no other antivirus programs.

I still have the same problem. I used avastclear in safemode. Then I installed avast using the online exe, which downloads/installs the latest files.

Still same problem...remains unprotected.

I give up. I uninstalled the latest avast and went back to avast 8, which works just fine.

Back again...

After several months of using the safe mode work around, I attempted to install avast the normal way with the same result.  After reading some replies, I got curious as to whether MBAM was the program causing the conflict with installation.

I went into safe mode.  Used avastclear to remove the Avast.  Then, I disabled MBAM from starting in the services tab of msconfig.  Restarted the computer into normal mode and attempted to install avast.  Guess what... No Problems this time.  I was not even prompted to reboot the computer after the installation completed like all previous attempts had required.  Avast loaded up, and started a scan as expected.  Clean install.

MBAM is in fact the program causing conflict with Avast installation of the newer versions.
