No, avast! does not use the traditional heuristics in which it tries to decide whether or not there is an unknown virus - this method is not functional on Win32 files anyway

But yes, avast! uses many different methods to find even unknown viruses and worms (for example generic, family detections of many worms, viruse or trojans). It is a very complex set of different rules which are quite strong and successful in detection.
And finally - no - you can't switch on or off any of these methods for detecting Win32 viruses.
