reg aswMBR tool
« on: May 02, 2011, 06:55:54 PM »
Hi,

I just ran aswMBR tool to see if it reports anything. And after running it, fixMBR button is enabled. Is it recommended to click the "fixMBR" button?

Note:I don't have any suspicious process/behavior running on my system. Ran a scan with MBAM/Hitman PRO just to be sure.

My System - W7 64 bit + Avast Free v6 + OA++ v5

Attached aswMBR log (truncated user/computer name in it).

Thanks,
Harsha.

Actually this fixmbr button just replaces your mbr with a copy
You can press this button by default

thanks essexboy and tribewars. Anyways, I won't take a chance by clicking "fixMBR" button. As, i dont have patience/time to restore it, if it bricks my laptop.

I think these are customized MBR's made by the vendors(dell,hp,lenovo,...) from which we buy our laptops.

How do you remove the anti-virus definitions once they have been downloaded (Windows 7)? I would like to use this as a MBR scanner only.

The latest version of the aswMBR prompts you to download definitions from Avast before running. Once it is done it becomes an anti-virus scanner. I want to revert back to just an MBR scanner and there does not seem to be an easy way to do that. Does anyone know where the database is stored and what other entries need to be removed?

They will be in the temporary file area - so emptying temps will clear them.  Also you can select no scan to disable that element  ;D

No problem as that is a new element within aswMBR making it a good analuysis tool
