Failed to update. The Avast! service is not running

Hi, my names Jamie.

I just paid for Avast! for a year and already it is having problems  ???
Current status is "Unsecured".

The message "The Avast! antivirus program has stopped working, or is in an inconsistent state Please re-start the program to resume protecting your system".

When i click the "FIX NOW" option absolutely nothing happen's.
When i click the "Start program absolutely nothing happen's.

I have tried to update the program but that doesnt work either. ???

When i click "Update engine and virus definitions" i get the message "Failed to update. The Avast! service is not running"

When i click "Update program" i also get the message "Failed to update. The Avast! service is not running".

I really liked the service and need it to be working so what should i do?

Try avast! repair


For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.


did it work ?


OBS: what AV did you use before you installed avast! ?
have you removed it ?
How ?

If you just installed Avast or updating it, sometimes you need to reboot it twice. I experience this issue with my friends laptop using Windows 7 64-bit and third party firewall (either Comodo or Online Armor)

Thanks, Pondus, for information about failed avast. The solution worked though I had to reboot afterwards.

Download the update and run it seems to solve.

Some people think it is windows update, that causes this.  This problem appeared after 24.1.2012 update

Setup cannot be started at this time. avast! is currently updating. Please wait until it finishes and run setup again.

I've had avast! free since October 2011, and it hasn't updated at all since November 23, 2011. I tried just buying avast!Pro, but it won't install because of the same error message above.

first, what AV did you have before installing avast ?
did you remove it before installing avast ?
did you run a removal tool to clear any leftover files ?

run and reboot - Uninstallers – Security Software

or try a new clean install of avast
remove with this and reboot  -  Uninstall Utility   http://www.avast.com/en-eu/uninstall-utility
then install again and reboot
