BSOD on XP SP3, minidump mention aswMon2.sys
« on: May 07, 2009, 05:22:25 PM »
Hi,

Last weekend I reinstalled my system, but now my PC returns a BSOD several times a day.

I am using Avast for over a year now and never had any issues, however, when I ran WinDbg I noticed aswMon2.sys in the minidumps.

Can I send you these logs, so that you can tell me how to resolve this? Do you need more information?

Kind regards,

Duncan

Check the folder <avast>\data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX (where XXXX is a random number) or *.mdmp there?
If so, send them to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

Also, please, go to folder \windows\minidump and send the newest (recent) .mdmp files for analysis. There is also C:\Windows\Memory.dmp file.
Better if you can compress (zip) them and add some information about the BSOD and the link for this thread.  ;)

Send an email to: vlk (at) avast.com
Or upload it to this anonymous ftp server: ftp://ftp.asw.cz/incoming
The best things in life are free.

Hello Tech,

Thanks for your quick reply!

There aren't any of those files you mention in my log directory. Also I cannot find the memory.dmp file

I will send the latest minidump along with a screenshot of the event in the system log.

Kind regards,

Duncan

Hello,

Since yesterday, my system has restarted once more. Should I change the way debugging information is written? I now have only small memory dumps. Perhaps a Kernel or Total Memory Dump contains more information for you to work with?

Kind regards,

Duncan

The problem still exists, I haven't heard anything after uploading my minidump.

I am now trying to isolate the problem, because I suspect Internet Explorer 8.

Hello,

Yesterday, I uninstalled Internet Explorer 8 and since then I encountered no more reboots.

Has anyone else ran into issues using Internet Explorer 8?

Kind regards,

D.

I can report that I don't have a problem with IE8.

Post a HijackThis log:

Hi YoKenny,

Thanks for your reply.

I will try to reinstall IE8 tonight, and afterward run HijackThis, and then post the log here.

Kind regards,

D.

I don't see any strange entries in there, but maybe I overlooked something. Hope you can help me further.

I can also install IE8 again and then run another scan.

Acrobat 8.0 has vulnerabilities and 9.1 has been released to address these vulnerabilities.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it then get 9.1:
http://get.adobe.com/reader <== and sure you un-select Free Google Toolbar

Please see:
Adobe Reader 9.1, Finally
http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12548

I am not a fan of P2P applications as they are the latest conduit for malware distribution today:
Perils of P2P File Sharing
http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/virus-trojan-spyware-help/305923-perils-p2p-file-sharing.html

Go to Add/Remove Programs and un-install uTorrent

You don't have User Profile Hive Cleanup Service to help with slow log off and unreconciled profile problems:

I have Adobe CS3 installed, and have already installed Adobe Reader 9.0, I am now updating to version 9.1, and updating the entire CS3 Suite

I am very carefull about what I download using P2P programs, and in the link you provided it says that uTorrent is reasonably safe.

I will read up some more on the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service, as I don't encounter any issues as mentioned in the KB article, so I don't see any need for installing it right now.

I have created a new log after the Adobe updates. Can you find anymore issues in my HijackThis log?

Thanks for your help so far! I'll give IE8 one more chance this weekend! I am also considering installing Windows Defender. What is your opinion on this?

Kind regards,

D.

I am very carefull about what I download using P2P programs, and in the link you provided it says that uTorrent is reasonably safe.
General Motors thought they were reasonably safe.

I will read up some more on the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service, as I don't encounter any issues as mentioned in the KB article, so I don't see any need for installing it right now.
Have a look in Application Events and you will see many error events for not being able to clean up the User Hive and this is installed with Vista by the way.

I like Event Log Explorerâ„¢ to see the system events:

Windows Defender that I update daily with its portal is another Layer of Defence that is good for monitoring changes to the HOSTS file that current malware is attacking:

Windows Defender is automatically installed with Vista.

I'm sure glad I don't use anything from Adobe:
