Avast-free setup failure
« on: November 24, 2009, 02:27:03 PM »
Hi Guys, I've bought for my wife a new notebook Lenovo with Vista OS Sun. 22 and Mon.23 tried to install Avast Free Edition, not uninstalling the included Norton AV. There was a failure... Then I uninstall Norton AV from the control panel add/remove programs. I restarted to download Avast Free Edition using the Cnet link, but I still couldn't install it. I made attempts few times, and all I could see were the same note, like "installation fails" at the end of loading.  ???
There's a report from one of these failures:

Ensure all remnants are gone, Norton can be a real pig to remove.

A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
Or ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Don't use the Cnet link but scroll down to the diriect link for your language version.
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the Language version need and not Cnet as that is for an on-line installation (not what you want to do).

- Direct download for avast Home, English version, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Hi, David!

Yesterday I deleted the remnants of Norton. Can I delete the programm that has deleted Norton?

Can I copy Avast files from my PC to my wife's notebook instead of downloading them from Internet?

Thanks! And have a nice evening!

1. I didn't think the program to remove Norton actually installs but runs as a stand alone program, but I have never had Norton on any system of mine, so never needed to use the tool. But I would leave it for the moment until you know it has done the job, then remove it.

2. No, you can't replicate all actions as the avast files are in other locations than just the program files folder and they have to be registered in the registry, etc.

For the best result it would be best to do a clean re-install:
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the English version and not Cnet as that is for an on-line installation (not what you want to do). - Direct download for avast Home, English version, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
  • 1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.  If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Download them in your system and transfer using a CD or USB drive.

Dear David!
I've quite entagled...
All you written in second paragraph:

, must I do before the proper action (1-3) from third paragraph
Quote

    * 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.  If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
    * 3. install the latest version, reboot.

?
If that so, how will I save the latest version of avast ?  The avast Uninstall Utility will uninstall the saved version from HDD... :o Am I wrong?

The first preparation element is getting the programs/tools you are going to use/need and unless you already have them, so yes you would need to get them first. I, at the time of writing haven't a clue if you have them or not, so I give links on where to get them and some additional instructions.

How can you reinstall without the program setup file available (as you said after an uninstall there would be no avast, hence the need for the setup/installation file).

The key to doing a 'clean' reinstall is to make sure everything of the old failed installation is removed.

For that you need to run the Uninstall Tool after using the normal windows add remove programs to uninstall the current avast installation.

I've used Norton on other PC's in the past, and it is fine to leave the Norton Removal Tool on your PC for now.  One thing I would advise since most Symantec products are difficult to remove as David suggested, is to go into Safe Mode to look for remnants of Norton and Symantec that are left behind.  Most likely, even after using the Norton Removal Tool you will find traces of the software when you go in Safe Mode ->Search -> all files and folders (including hidden and subfolders in advanced settings).  Delete anything relating to Norton or Symantec that comes up after doing your search in Safe Mode, then reboot your machine.

After rebooting, clean up your PC and reboot again.  Now you are ready to run the Avast Uninstall Removal Tool that David mentioned.  Then continue to follow the directions David has already given you.

You need a clean version of Avast at this point on your machine and that is why you need to get rid of the version you currently have on your machine.

Thanks, David and SafeSurf!

Today I finally downloaded and launched the latest version of Avast.

I couldn't uninstall the remnants of Avast, because I failed to find them. And I think there were no remnants of Avast at all.
Also I couldn't check the traces of Symanteс , because I failed to launch this notebook (Lenovo G550) in a safe mode. All it proposed to me (while I reboot it), were F2 (to change setup) and F12(to see Boot config.). The usual F8 (to choose Safe mode) didn't work...

So I dared to download and launch without all this things... and it works!!

Thanks a lot! :)
