I just downloaded the "new updated" version of Avast Free this evening, and now none of the shortcuts I had on my desktop work.  I tried uninstalling Avast, re-installing it, deleting shortcuts, creating new shortcuts, but they still don't work.

When I click on the desktop shortcut, I get this message: "Unable to open this Internet Shortcut.  The protocol "http" does not have a registered program."

Any idea what has happened and how to fix it?  These shortcuts (Intellicast, Amazaon, etc.) worked earlier today, prior to downloading the updated free version.

Also having issues with limited internet connectivity, but the computer that does not have the updated version is fine.  Scan has been run and no issues.

If I understand correctly, you upgraded from a previous version of Avast and got the problem, then you did an Avast uninstall and clean install and the problem persists.  Did you use the Avast Uninstaller Tool when you uninstalled?

What product of Avast are you using?  Free/Pro/AIS?  What is your OS?

Have you tried the Avast Repair yet?
XP Users:
- Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
- Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
- Reboot.

Vista & Win7 Users:
-   Control Panel
-   Programs & Features
-   Uninstall a Program > Select Avast Antivirus
-   Click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair
-   Click Next and follow.
-   Reboot.

Let us know if this helps.  Avast will be doing a fix for a few glitches to version 7.0.1451, but I haven't heard of this problem until your post.  I have reported it to them though.  Let us know if the Avast Repair resolves your problem.  Thank you.

Sounds like something went wrong with the Google Chrome install.
Try re-installing Chrome and that should allow your internet URL's to work properly again.

I "repaired" Avast per instructions and rebooted.

I use Google as search engine, but chose NOT to install Google chrome -- but did Avast go ahead and download IE as default browser maybe, or something else? Now when I try to shut down, IE does not close (though it says it is closing), my computer will not shut down, and I have to "force" the shutdown.

Desktop shortcuts still do not work.

I also seem to be having some internet connectivity issues since downloading this version (my hubby's computer works fine, but he still has the old version).

Could some of the Avast shields be causing my shortcuts not to work? Can levels of protection be adjusted without compromising safety?

Having the same issue on my computer for 2 days since I installed new version. Usually it will be fine for a few hrs. and then when I come back to my computer I can't click on anything and have it respond. Tried everything so far that I've read on here. Only way to get things to work again is to re-boot. Running windows xp service pk. 3 did NOT install Chrome. Use IE for browser. Have free version of Avast for over 4 years. Just re-registered 7 days ago.

Also noticed when I did my defrag that night after installing new version I went from having 63% free space to 72% free space? Hopefully nothing went missing on me. My updates etc. all seem to work fine and I did a regular scan and a boot scan and nothing was found.

Avast shortcut has no image, that is it is looking like a paper image, it's really irritating. And every time double clicking it, windows asks 'Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer'. WHAT HAPPENED TO AVAST !!!

I suggest you start your own topic giving as much detail as possible.
Posting in a thread that is over a year old certainly doesn't mean you have the same problem.
