Hi fellas!
I just wanted some reassurance before downloading Orbit's free download manager. I had an older version and kept ignoring the invitation to update to the newest one because it wants to install a toolbar. That is totally out of the question!! Well I reformatted my p.c. to totally rid myself of that damn DAP down loader with the evil Speedbit, and I've been doing some extensive searching for different opinions on Orbit, and it seems to be okay. I went to their website and they listed Avast among many, as certifying that they are totally 100% clean!! Now what I want to know, plain and simple, is this true! I'll be waiting for your trusted and knowledgeable replies! Thanks! ;D

Hi SCORPIONINBLUE,
Well it's hard to tell from your description much.
I've been doing some extensive searching for different opinions on Orbit, and it seems to be okay. I went to their website and they listed Avast among many, as certifying that they are totally 100% clean!!
A link would be nice. It's not possible to confirm this unless we know where you went to download the software.
From personal habit, I use www.download.com. Here is the link for your specific program:
http://www.download.com/Orbit-Downloader/3000-2071_4-10600926.html
It seems to have good reviews so it's up to you to decide. I haven't had any problems with viruses on Download.com but this is not a guaranty. I would do a scan before installing the software and if that doesn't reveal anything then it should be OK.

I have been using Orbit downloader without problem for some time now.
-
100% safe, used it for about a year no probs, But I some sites don't work with them, at file front I can only download 1/3 of the speed
-
What concerns me is that it installs a toolbar in IE, I only use Firefox but the idea of a toolbar that I don't have the option to pass on makes me very uncomfortable.
-
Well it is an extremely rare occasion when I use IE (firefox is my default and there is an Orbit add-on), but there is no toolbar on mine.
I have mine integrated for Firefox in it Tools, Preferences, Monitoring.
-
When I had version 2.8.1 it was the same way in Firefox, after I did the reformatting I thought I might try the newest version.....but as I said it's that toolbar! Luckily I was able to locate the older version I had before at download.com. I'll probably just download it. What caught my attention....... as I said before, was Orbit's claim that Avast along with more than a dozen others, say they are as pure as the driven snow!! Absolutely "no dirt on their hands", and since my name isn't 'Chicken Little' nor was I born yesterday, I wanted verification of that fact!!! Are any of the senior moderators here that might have knowledge of Orbit's claim, and could they shed some light on all of this??!!! Techie......are you in the house??!! ;D

I'm still using 2.7.4 I couldn't see anything security related in the update so I never got it.
http://www.orbitdownloader.com/changelog.htm (http://www.orbitdownloader.com/changelog.htm)
You could get that version again, http://www.download.com/Orbit-Downloader/3000-2071_4-10600926.html (http://www.download.com/Orbit-Downloader/3000-2071_4-10600926.html), just select the version you want from the drop down list.
Even if I had the latest version with a toolbar, it wouldn't take long to get rid of it.
-
I ve downloaded the latest orbit downloader with no problems but i disable the fire fox extension,,,
cause it seems make firefox slower when i m using it!!!!!!
-
Makes no difference on my system with the firefox add-on enabled.
-
I just installed version 2.8.18 and I was ask both for fire fox, Opera and internet explorer to make exceptions for the fire wall. What's up with that? ???
-
I use orbit and I find no problem with it. I think they will ask you to install ASK toolbar ???
-
nope... no ask toolbar... just permission to access the internet.
-
Yeah, you are right.
-
I don't know why it would ask for a firewall exception, but Orbit Downloader has been under suspicion for a while about "phoning home"... im guessing this doesn't make their situation any better :P
-
If you only want to download, then try out FlashGet 3.0 beta
THis is the best in the world ;D ;D ;D

I did like Flashget much, but I find hard to use the 3.0 beta, since I found orbit downloader so simple and safe, I use it for a while now.
-
I didn't like the early versions of flashget and tried others, the one I have been using for a long time without problem (and no phoning home on my system) is Orbit Downloader.

Well I had and have Free Download Manager which works great but there are some downloads it won't handle. So I tried Orbit which worked fine and did what I wanted it to do but because of the whole deal with the Firewall I have un-installed it.
Oh well, I'll look for something else.
Thank you all for the quick replies and the suggestions.

I am using FDM for a long time without any problem & it has lots of features that any download manager can ever have. You u please tell which type of downloads FDM can't handle but orbit can?

it`s the blasted FLV downloads. I have news shows I watch at home but download at university because of my limited band width. FDM used to work great but now it isn`t working any more. I can use RealPlayer to download the videos but this takes up intirely too much time.
The site is:
hxxp://www.realitatea.net/
(In case you are wondering, it`s romanian)
FDM used to allow me to make a list of downloads I wanted and then do them in one shot. Orbit does this well but I din`t use too much because of the affore mentioned issue with the fire wall.
for the time being i`ll try to fin another solution otherwise I'll just use Real Player to do the downloads.

I do not let anything from Real on my systems:

Well I use it because of the codec that allows to download FLV videos. Otherwise I mostly use GOM player to run the flv files. I also have WMP clasic but this I use for formats that couldn`t be played by the previous two.
PS My computer is used for other things other than watching videos. I simply don`t have cable so my comp is my source of information written and otherwise. ;)

I encountered a problem with orbit after I switched from Windows 7 RC to Retail. There is a conflict with the Hosts file. Some sites load and others don't don't. Disabling or deleting the Host file get rid of the problem. There doesn't seem to be any thing that is common about them.

Who's HOSTS file do you use?
I use HostMan to manage my HOSTS file that uses hpHosts and MVPS HOSTS files as input plus I use HostsServer as a browser speedup proxy with its logging capability to show the HOSTS file's effect:
