Is Orbit downloader 100% free of malware?
« on: February 28, 2009, 06:10:47 PM »
Hi fellas!

I just wanted some reassurance before downloading Orbit's free download manager.  I had an older version and kept ignoring the invitation to update to the newest one because it wants to install a toolbar.  That is totally out of the question!!  Well I reformatted my p.c. to totally rid myself of that damn DAP down loader with the evil Speedbit, and  I've been doing some extensive searching for different opinions on Orbit, and it seems to be okay.  I went to their website and they listed Avast among many, as certifying that they are totally 100%  clean!!  Now what I want to know, plain and simple, is this true!  I'll be waiting for your trusted and knowledgeable replies!  Thanks! ;D

Hi SCORPIONINBLUE,

Well it's hard to tell from your description much.

A link would be nice. It's not possible to confirm this unless we know where you went to download the software.

From personal habit, I use www.download.com. Here is the link for your specific program:

http://www.download.com/Orbit-Downloader/3000-2071_4-10600926.html

It seems to have good reviews so it's up to you to decide. I haven't had any problems with viruses on Download.com but this is not a guaranty. I would do a scan before installing the software and if that doesn't reveal anything then it should be OK.

What concerns me is that it installs a toolbar in IE, I only use Firefox but the idea of a toolbar that I don't have the option to pass on makes me very uncomfortable.

Well it is an extremely rare occasion when I use IE (firefox is my default and there is an Orbit add-on), but there is no toolbar on mine.

I have mine integrated for Firefox in it Tools, Preferences, Monitoring.

When I had version 2.8.1 it was the same way in Firefox, after I did the reformatting I thought I might try the newest version.....but as I said it's that toolbar!  Luckily I was able to locate the older version I had before at download.com.  I'll probably just download it.  What caught my attention....... as I said before, was Orbit's claim that Avast along with more than a dozen others, say they are as pure as the driven snow!!  Absolutely "no dirt on their hands", and since my name isn't 'Chicken Little' nor was I born yesterday, I wanted verification of that fact!!!  Are any of the senior moderators here that might have knowledge of Orbit's claim, and could they shed some light on all of this??!!!  Techie......are you in the house??!! ;D

I'm still using 2.7.4 I couldn't see anything security related in the update so I never got it.

http://www.orbitdownloader.com/changelog.htm

You could get that version again, http://www.download.com/Orbit-Downloader/3000-2071_4-10600926.html, just select the version you want from the drop down list.

Even if I had the latest version with a toolbar, it wouldn't take long to get rid of it.

I don't know why it would ask for a firewall exception, but Orbit Downloader has been under suspicion for a while about "phoning home"... im guessing this doesn't make their situation any better  :P
